Mahindra, as part of its global strategy, is exploring the possibility of introducing the recently unveiled Global Pik Up concept in the ASEAN region, Australia, India, South Africa, and South and Central America in the coming years. Alongside the pickup truck, Mahindra also showcased the Thar electric concept, and announced that it also plans to launch EVs in the UK and other European markets.

  2. Thar electric to get motors sourced from Volkswagen
  3. Scorpio.e, Bolero.e also in the works

As part of a new globalisation plan, Mahindra plans to expand volumes in existing markets with the XUV700, Scorpio N and other legacy products.

Veejay Nakra, president of automotive division at Mahindra echoed this and says, "It is a 2 million-unit global pickup truck market addressing the multiple needs of commute, lifestyle and off-roading with this new midsize global pickup truck."

Mahindra's EV plans

In phase two, once the INGLO-based electric SUVs are rolled out in India, the company would like to export the same to markets in the UK and Europe. And in phase three, the company would look at acquiring double digit market share in key existing markets and adding new markets with an expanded portfolio.

Nakra added, "EV is at the core of our internationalisation plan. However, at present, we are currently mapping out the launch strategy for the pickup trucks. We are currently analysing the potential of each of these markets and it will be a key pillar of global expansion strategy."

Mahindra Global Pik Up concept details

The pickup truck will be powered by the same mHawk diesel engine as the Scorpio N with 4x4 capability. Announcing the new refresh strategy at the FY23 annual earnings conference, Anish Shah, MD of Mahindra had shared that even as the company looks to consolidate its leadership in SUVs, it is planning to aggressively pursue global expansion. "The company has set its sight on growing its global automotive revenue by 2.5 times," Shah announced.

Mahindra also revealed that the Global Pik Up will be packed with features and technology, and it spoke of a few like ADAS capability, semi-automatic parking and 5G-based connectivity features. And as is the hot favourite in India, this pickup will have a sunroof.

Mahindra Thar e concept details

Mahindra also showcased the Thar.e concept – the electric iteration of the Thar – in South Africa. The concept looks nothing like its ICE version and will be based on a modified version of the carmaker's INGLO platform. While initial models like the XUV.e8 will use BYD and Valeo batteries and motors, respectively, (read more here) the Thar.e is likely to use the more powerful motors sourced from Volkswagen. Mahindra also revealed details about the launch timelines of its upcoming electric SUVs, with the XUV.e8 being the first to hit the market in December 2024.
