The Indian scooter industry has achieved record wholesales of 68.53 lakh units in the financial year that ended on March 31, 2025 (FY2025), a 17 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase. What helped drive the numbers was manufacturers rolling out refreshed and new models, revival of demand from rural and semi-urban regions and strong electric-scooter sales.

  1. Indian scooter industry sold 68.53 lakh units in FY2025
  2. TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Hero record best ever EV sales

General overview of the scooter market in FY2025

Indian scooter market records its best ever sales since FY2018

While Honda Activa remains the market leader with a 42 percent share, TVS follows with an increase in its pie to 26 percent. Bajaj Auto doubled its share to 4 percent even as Yamaha and Ather Energy registered strong sales. Electric two-wheelers, with over 7.73 lakh units, comprised 11 percent of the overall scooter sales.

The Indian scooter market’s previous best fiscal year was FY2018, with 67.1 lakh units sold. FY2025 sales have exceeded that by over 1.33 lakh units, averaging over 5.71 lakh units a month, which translates to well over 18,500 scooters per day.

The industry hit a monthly high of over 7.21 lakh units in the festive season (October); it surpassed 6 lakh units in August and September and over 5 lakh units eight times. The lowest monthly sales were in December – 4.18 lakh units, as buyers prefer to defer their purchase decisions to the next year.

Honda retains no.1 position; TVS, Bajaj Auto and Ather Energy increase their market share

TVS sold 18.3 lakh units and Honda 28.4 lakh units

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s sales surged 12 percent to 28.4 lakh units in FY2025, helping it retain the top spot, but its market share has declined to 41.50 percent from 43.33 percent in FY2024. Honda’s scooter portfolio comprises the Activa 110, Activa 125, Dio 110 and Dio 125

TVS Motor Co, which has the Jupiter 110, Jupiter 125, NTorq and Zest in its stable, sold 18.3 lakh scooters, up 25 percent YoY. Its market share inched up to 26 percent from 25 percent in FY2024. While the four ICE scooters combined sold over 15.40 lakh units, up 22 percent, its iQube e-scooter clocked a 44 percent YoY growth with over 2.73 lakh units.

Suzuki Motorcycle India has also fared well, recording a 15 percent surge in sales with over 10.24 lakh units. The Access remains its bestselling product.

Hero MotoCorp sold over 3.91 lakh scooters, posting a 2 percent YoY decline. Its range comprises the 110cc Pleasure and Xoom, 125cc Destini/Destini Prime, the recently launched Xoom 125, and the Xoom 160. Together, these have sold just under 3.33 lakh units, down 12 percent YoY. However, the company has achieved strong gains with its Vida V1 and V2 electric scooters, whose sales jumped 195 percent to 58,500 units on a low base of just under 20,000 Vidas.

With just under 3.10 lakh units, Yamaha has posted a 13 percent growth, but its market share has slipped to 4.51 percent from 4.71 percent. The 125cc Fascino and Ray ZR have together sold over 2.86 lakh units, up by 12 percent YoY. The 155cc Aerox, with over 22,000 units, saw 24 percent growth.

Bajaj Auto, like TVS and Ather Energy, has increased its scooter market share, selling over 2.77 lakh units, a 140 percent YoY increase, which roughly translates into an additional 1.61 lakh units. Consequently, its market share has doubled to 4 percent.

Ather Energy, which is witnessing strong sales traction for its Rizta family e-scooter, sold over 1.55 lakh units, up 44 percent, and increased its market share to 2.26 percent from 1.85 percent.

Share of EVs in scooter sales grows to 11 percent

Electric 2-wheeler sales in FY2025 cross 7.73 lakh units

The three legacy players – TVS, Bajaj and Hero MotoCorp – and Ather Energy have each registered best-ever fiscal year sales. Interestingly, Bajaj has beaten TVS in cumulative e-two-wheeler dispatches, selling over 2.77 lakh units; TVS sold just over 2.73 lakh iQubes.
