Hi, I’m planning to buy a new car, and it will be the first car in our family. I’m looking for safety, a strong and refined engine, and good comfort for rear-seat passengers, since my family members are about 5 ft 5 in tall on average. After multiple test drives, I’m confused between the Nissan Tekton 1.3 manual, the Renault Duster 1.3 manual, the Skoda Kushaq 1.5 and 1.0, and the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 and 1.0. I’m mainly looking at the top-end variants. Which one would you suggest? If none of these, which car should I consider?
If you prefer a manual gearbox and are looking for strong performance, we would suggest choosing between the Nissan Tekton 1.3 turbo manual and the Renault Duster 1.3 turbo manual. These more powerful engine options are available with a manual gearbox, unlike the 1.5 TSI versions of the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, which are offered only with a DSG automatic. The 1.0 TSI manual versions of the Kushaq and Taigun are good enough for everyday use, but they won't offer the same performance as the 1.3 turbo engines. Both the Tekton and Duster are also enjoyable to drive and offer a comfortable ride. Given your family's average height of around 5.5ft, rear seat space in either car should be adequate. Between the two, the decision would largely come down to which brand, styling and overall cabin experience you prefer.
Hi, I am looking for hybrid options. Until now, I was getting convinced by the Hyryder, but the Duster has changed my mind. However, I am not happy with the rear seat row of the Duster. Should I wait for the Hyundai Creta Hybrid if it is launching? My monthly running is 600-700 km, with 90% city driving (for office commute) and highway trips once every 3 months.
With a monthly running of just 600-700km, we would not rush into buying a strong hybrid purely for fuel savings. Your usage is predominantly urban, which suits a strong hybrid car, but the low annual running of around 7,200-8,400km means the price premium over a regular petrol SUV will take a long time to recover. Since you are not happy with the Duster's rear seat, there is little reason to compromise on an important aspect of the car just for its hybrid powertrain. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara are also worth considering, as both offer strong hybrid powertrains and a more accommodating rear seat than the Duster. The next-generation Hyundai Creta is expected in 2027 and the Kia Seltos too is expected to get it. Our suggestion would be to wait for the new Creta, but don't expect the hybrid to pay for itself through fuel savings at your current running. Buy it if you value the refinement and efficiency of a hybrid, rather than purely for lower running costs.
My budget is around Rs 20 lakh, and I’m based in Bangalore. The car will be used for a mix of city and highway driving, with an approximate usage split of 60:40. Since this will be my first car, my priorities, in order, are comfort, long-term reliability, driving dynamics and overall cost of ownership, including fuel efficiency and maintenance. My current shortlist includes the Renault Duster Hybrid, Honda Elevate CVT and Kia Seltos IVT. Which of these would be the best choice for my requirements?
Considering your requirements, the Renault Duster hybrid will be a good choice for you. The hybrid Duster is the most powerful car against its rivals and is genuinely impressive to drive and handle. The new Duster also gets FDD (Frequency Dependent Dampers) that improve ride and handling. What also works well is the multi-mode gearbox that gives it smooth performance in the city and stable and refined driving on the highway. Being a strong hybrid, its efficiency is also much better in comparison to the Honda Elevate and the Kia Seltos. The Duster also has a 7 year warranty for the car and an 8 year warranty for the battery adding peace of mind. The only downside maybe Renaults service network which isn't as established as Honda or Kia. However, if there is a showroom near you, this should not be a problem.
Should I consider purchasing Renault duster hybrid as a first time buyer? My primary requirement is decent mileage and long term reliability.
The Renault Duster hybrid is an impressive car but the hybrid variant only makes sense if you will be driving a lot more than average. If your annual coverage is over 20,000km and most of it is in the city, then the hybrid variant makes more sense financially. If the Duster is what you like, given its styling and presence, the turbo-petrol version would be better to go for. However, since mileage is a strong priority, we would recommend you to check the Maruti Suzuki Victoris instead. It is the same size as the Duster, but offers better efficiency and comes with the reliability of Maruti. It is hassle-free, easy on the pocket and the vast service network and low part price also makes for a better case. The styling is not as bold as the Duster, but for your needs, the high mileage, easy-to-drive nature and reliability makes it a better choice.
I'm looking for a compact SUV that feels well-built and is enjoyable to drive. My driving is split roughly 60:40 between the city and highways in Bengaluru. I was considering the Tata Sierra and Hyundai Creta EV, but after multiple test drives, I realised the Sierra is too boxy for my taste and the Creta EV is too expensive. I hadn't seriously considered the Skoda Kushaq or Volkswagen Taigun before, but I really enjoyed driving them. They feel superbly built, do the basics of being a car very well and put a smile on your face while doing so. However, they lack auto-hold and consume a lot of petrol. I recently moved back to India, and this will be our first car. I hadn't given much thought to range until recently. I've already booked the Renault Duster hybrid without a proper test drive, but I want to test-drive the Duster 1.3-litre DCT and the Kushaq/Taigun 1.5-litre DSG versions as well. I expect to get a chance to test-drive the Duster hybrid in about a week or 10 days. What would your advice be at this stage?
With your requirements, the Renault Duster Hybrid would be the ideal choice against the Volkswagen and the Skoda. The Duster is enjoyable to drive, and its hybrid powertrain also offers good fuel efficiency. Since 60% of your driving is in the city, the Duster Hybrid would be idealIt isn't a typical hybrid with a CVT that can whine when you accelerate on the highway. Instead, it has a proper gearbox that feels a lot more adept at triple-digit speeds, making highway drives more enjoyable. Boot space is also quite good for a hybrid, so there isn't much of a compromise in practicality. You miss out on things like a spare wheel as standard and a 360-degree camera, but otherwise, the cabin is well equipped.Back seat space is not exactly class best, but cushioning and support from the seats are rather good. The only other issue might be after-sales service. Check where Renault dealerships are in your area and if it's not a problem then the Duster would be the ideal choice to get for your requirements.
