Should I switch from pre-booked Duster hybrid to Seltos X-Line A diesel for better mileage? I currently own a 2018 Duster petrol CVT top model. I have pre-booked the new Duster hybrid, but after checking out the Kia Seltos, I am thinking about cancelling my booking and booking the Seltos X-Line A diesel instead. I want good mileage, and boot space is also important. Which option is better for me?
If outright mileage is your top priority, I wouldn’t rush to cancel your booking of the new Renault Duster Hybrid. On paper and in real-world conditions, a strong hybrid setup will be more efficient than a conventional diesel like the Kia Seltos.
The Duster hybrid is expected to come with a state-of-the-art 1.8-litre strong hybrid powertrain. This will make it superior to the Seltos diesel not just in fuel efficiency, but also in refinement and smoothness. In city driving, especially, where hybrids can run on electric power at low speeds, you will likely see a clear advantage.
Performance and drive feel should also be a step up. Strong hybrids tend to feel more responsive at low speeds thanks to the electric motor assistance. Moreover, they are typically quieter and smoother than diesels.
Since you already own a Duster, you’re familiar with the brand’s DNA - the solid, planted feel and slightly rugged character. You can expect some of that core personality to carry forward into the new model, albeit in a more modern and sophisticated package.
However, space is where the equation changes. The Seltos is distinctly larger inside. If having the best possible rear seat space and a bigger boot is critical for your usage - frequent family trips, lots of luggage, airport runs, etc., then the Seltos has an edge. It is a more spacious product overall and feels roomier in day-to-day use.
The Seltos diesel also offers very good fuel efficiency by segment standards, and being a well-established model, it comes with proven mechanicals and a feature-rich cabin. So it’s not a weak choice by any means, it just won’t match the hybrid Duster’s likely efficiency and refinement.
So, it really comes down to priorities. If mileage, smoothness and having the latest hybrid tech matter most, stick with the Duster hybrid. If maximum cabin and boot space are non-negotiable. You prefer the reassurance of a currently available, well-known product, then the Seltos X-Line diesel makes strong sense.

Hi, I am looking to upgrade to a mid-size SUV from my 8-year-old Baleno. The car is mostly driven by a driver within the city of Kolkata. It will run about 30 km a day, and I would prefer good fuel efficiency. My budget is around ₹15 to 18 lakh. Please help me choose my next car.
Since you have a low daily running, a petrol SUV would be a good choice for you. The Kia Seltos in its HTK (O) guise, featuring a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with a CVT gearbox, would be ideal for your intra-city runs. The Seltos is one of the more modern SUVs in the segment and has a fantastic interior with high-quality build and features.
You could also wait for the new Renault Duster, as it also has a promising powertrain, and while the interior space or premiumness is not as high as the Seltos, it has a lot of character when it comes to design. That said, as of now, we would recommend the Kia Seltos as it is a very well-sorted SUV that gets the basics right and even in its mid-spec guise, feels modern and worth the money. It has a good ride, the rear seat is comfy, and it is light and convenient to drive in the city.

Hi Team, I am looking for a mid-size SUV under Rs 20 lakhs with a diesel option. My usage will be 80% highway and 20% city. I was looking at the Seltos diesel version. Kindly suggest how to proceed further.
The new Kia Seltos diesel is a strong all-around package and a good fit for your requirements. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is refined, offers decent performance, and is pleasant to drive. The Seltos is also spacious, comfortable and well-equipped. Within your budget, you can opt for the HTK variant if you are looking at the automatic, or the HTK (O) if you prefer a manual transmission. Given that around 80% of your driving will be on the highway, it is highly unlikely that you will face any DPF-related issues.
Another diesel option worth considering is the new Tata Sierra. Compared to the Seltos, the Sierra is even more spacious, and its wider cabin makes it a very comfortable five-seater. It also scores slightly higher on comfort thanks to its plush ride quality. However, the Sierra is priced on the higher side, so variants comparable in price to the Seltos are not as well equipped, and its diesel engine is not as refined.
One factor to note is that with stricter emission norms, diesel engines are no longer as fuel-efficient as they once were. If fuel efficiency is your absolute top priority, you should also consider strong hybrid powertrains such as the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Grand Vitara, or Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, all of which can return over 20 kpl in both city and highway driving.
The upcoming Renault Duster is also expected to get a strong hybrid powertrain around Diwali, so that could be another option if you are willing to wait.

Hi, I am using a Duster 110 RXZ and now want to sell it and buy a new SUV. What would you suggest, a petrol or a diesel SUV? My monthly run is around 1,000 km, and I have already driven 85,000 km in 8 years. My budget is around Rs 20 lakh, and I need a good, tough SUV that can be used for very long drives.
Since your monthly running is not very high, you can opt for a petrol SUV. In the Rs 20 lakh budget, you can consider the Tata Sierra, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Skoda Kushaq, to name a few. All three are good options and will serve you well.
The Hyundai Creta and Seltos are mechanically identical, while the Kushaq and Taigun share a lot between them. To be fair, it comes down to the design and features you prefer.
The Renault Duster is also a great option to consider, and while prices are not out yet, it is likely to be in the same range as the above-mentioned SUVs. However, our recommendation will be to wait for the new upcoming Duster.
Since you already have the older version and have a good experience with it, the new one will be worth waiting for. It has modern looks, a premium cabin and lots of features, making it a strong contender in this segment.

Hi, I am a first-time car buyer, around 38 years old. I am planning to buy an automatic as I will mostly be driving in the city and occasionally travelling on highways. I need a good-performing and spacious sub-4m compact SUV with reasonable maintenance costs. I am a fan of torque converter or CVT gearboxes only, as they are easier on the pocket. My budget is around Rs 16 lakh. Since the Venue and Creta do not have torque converter options, I have left those out. I am confused between the Skoda Kylaq and the 3XO AX5L AT, as it comes with Level 2 ADAS features. Back seat comfort is good in the 3XO, and we are a family of five. Which one should I choose? Or should I wait for the Duster 2026?
Yes, the Mahindra XUV 3XO has ADAS features and is generally well-equipped, and yes, the petrol engines come with a torque converter automatic gearbox. It also has the most spacious cabin in the segment, which will be helpful for a family of five.
Do note, however, that its boot is not particularly large, the powerful 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with the AT is not very fuel efficient, and the fully loaded petrol AT with ADAS will go past your budget of Rs 16 lakh.
The Skoda Kylaq may miss out on some features, and it is slightly less spacious in the cabin, but overall, it is a better car to drive, and it falls within your budget.
You could wait for the Renault Duster, but it is a few months away, there's likely to be a big rush at booking time, it's a segment above, so it may not fit in your budget, and it comes with a dual-clutch automatic, not a TC or CVT.

My father is planning to buy a new car and, after extensive research, he has finalized the Honda Elevate ADV DT (automatic). However, we are wondering if it would be worth waiting for the new Renault Duster before making the final decision. We are based in Nagpur and currently drive a 2011 Swift diesel. Our running is not very high, so we are now preferring a petrol automatic for better ease of driving and convenience. We test drove the Honda Elevate, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta, and he liked the Elevate the most. He especially appreciated the seating stance and felt it offered a proper SUV-like driving position and commanding feel, whereas the others, although feature-rich, didn’t give him the same SUV feel. Our priorities are comfort, reliability, ease of driving in city traffic, and a strong SUV-like feel. Would it be worth waiting for the new Renault Duster, or is the Elevate CVT a good choice to proceed with?
If your father likes the Honda Elevate, he should go ahead with it. It's a practical, reliable, no-nonsense SUV that gets its fundamentals absolutely right; it merely lacks a bit of flash value compared to rivals. It perfectly suits your requirements of comfort, reliability, ease of driving around town, and SUV-like feel. Moreover, it's got one of the best naturally aspirated petrol engines in the segment, which is equal parts efficient, relaxed and fun, and it's mated to a smooth CVT automatic.
As for the Renault Duster, it does seem like a good choice on paper. It does fulfill your requirements of a tall seating stance and commanding feel, but other than that, it is an unknown quantity - especially in terms of ease of city driving and reliability. We would recommend going ahead with the Honda Elevate.

I am looking for an SUV with an automatic transmission, preferably a hybrid (if not, then petrol), large legroom, good boot space, all-around sensors or a 360-degree camera, good infotainment, nice interiors, and climate control. Budget is around ₹18 lakh, can stretch to ₹20 lakh. I had Kia and Creta in mind, but I am unsure about the variant. There is also no hybrid option in these. I can wait if a better hybrid is coming out within this year.
Since you are looking for a hybrid SUV around Rs 20 lakh, the Toyota Hyryder, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, or the Victoris would fall into your consideration set and offer you the features you are looking for, like climate control and a good infotainment system.
However, since all three have the hybrid battery placed in the boot, you do lose out a lot on cargo volume, and since this is also a big priority for you, we would suggest you wait for the Renault Duster hybrid, which is coming around Diwali this year. While its boot will be smaller than the non-hybrid version, it will still be much larger than what the Toyota and Maruti hybrids offer. Since you are willing to wait, this would be a sensible option. Since you said you can wait for about a year, we would think this would be wise.

I have a Duster RXZ 110PS petrol top-end manual transmission. I have completed 49,000 km and am planning to replace it, but my budget is limited as I cannot afford a bigger down payment. With the Duster being an icon, which car would you suggest? My budget for an automatic only is ₹12 lakh.
Unfortunately, we will not know the price of the new Renault Duster for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Worse still, Renault has chosen not to offer an automatic gearbox option with the smaller, less powerful 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, even though the same engine is offered with a CVT in the smaller Renault Kiger.
However, Renault has been known to undercut rivals in each of the segments it operates in, and there may be a chance that the new Duster with the 1.3-litre turbo petrol and DCT auto could fit in your budget of Rs 12 lakh.
If not, you could consider other compact SUVs, such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza or the Tata Nexon, which are similarly tough SUVs that will get you an automatic at your budget, albeit in a slightly smaller size.

I want to change my old car. My priorities are safety, mileage, overall maintenance and riding comfort. My budget is 15 lakhs. Should I wait for the Renault Duster Strong Hybrid? Do you have any other suggestions?
The Renault Duster strong hybrid is expected only around Diwali, so it’s still about 7-8 months away. Prices aren’t out yet, but when it arrives, it’s likely to be more expensive than the regular Duster, and most indications suggest its top variants will sit well above your Rs 15 lakh budget. So if you need a car now, it’s probably better to look at existing options rather than wait.
A good choice around your budget is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris VXi Automatic. It is priced at about Rs 15.8 lakh on the road. Since Maruti is pushing Victoris hard right now, you may be able to negotiate a discount to bring it closer to your Rs 15 lakh target. It has a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, Maruti’s reputation for low running and maintenance costs, and decent ride comfort and mileage for daily use, which matches your priorities.
The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder are also good options. These two and the Victoris are very similar underneath. They share the same platform, engines and transmissions, and in their hybrid variants, the strong hybrid system behaves the same in both. The main differences are in styling and feature packaging:
The Grand Vitara leans towards Maruti’s design language and comes from Nexa showrooms, with a slightly sportier feel and often a bit more tech in comparable variants.
The Hyryder has Toyota styling cues, a different interior colour theme and sometimes slightly different equipment levels depending on the variant.

Hi Autocar! I submitted my question previously, but haven’t seen it published even after a week, so I’m asking again. I am planning to upgrade my 2014 Honda City CVT, mainly due to lower petrol mileage caused by ethanol blending and because I can currently get good resale value. I want to move to a mid-size SUV petrol automatic. My usage is mostly city driving, with about 10% highway use. I also make frequent airport trips due to extended family visits, which is why I am considering a mid-size SUV or MPV. My budget is around ₹18 lakh, and I do not want to stretch it. I am focused on petrol efficiency and want either a hybrid or an electric vehicle. Are the Toyota Hybrid and MG Windsor the best options? Would it be worth waiting until the end of this year or even 2027 for more hybrid or EV options, especially MPVs? I know the Renault Duster Hybrid is being hyped with a large hybrid battery, so I'm wondering if I should make a purchase now with a better resale value for my old car, or take a hit on the resale value of my old car and wait till 2027 for new hybrids.
Since you're looking at hybrid or EV options only, with a budget of Rs 18 lakh, you could consider the MG Windsor EV. It has a spacious cabin and a large boot, which you are likely to appreciate, particularly during your frequent airport trips. If you opt for the standard range version, you can expect around 230-260km of real-world range, while the 'Pro' version could get you an additional range of over 100km. While it is largely a very practical car, its biggest downside is that even for basic functions, such as mirror adjustment, lights, sunshade, etc., you have to rely on its touchscreen. However, with time, you will get used to this.
If you're not in a hurry, you could wait for the Renault Duster hybrid that'll be launched in the second half of this year. Besides being a hybrid, it is likely to have a noticeably larger boot than the existing hybrid cars on sale, namely the Hyryder, Grand Vitara and Victoris. However, there are high chances that you might have to stretch your budget for its hybrid variant.
