Renault Cars Under 5 Lakh in India (1)

The only Renault car under 5 lakh available for sale in India, as of now, is the Kwid. Its price starts at Rs 4.53 lakh and goes up to Rs 5.61 lakh (ex-showroom), which means only two of its variants, the Evolution 1.0 and the Evolution 1. AMT falls within this bracket on an ex-showroom basis. And once you go by on-road price, , only the Evolution 1.0 variant is available.

 

Though mainstream brands like Maruti Suzuki and Tata offer more choice at this price point, but at Autocar India, we feel that Renault’s approach with the Kwid is to lead with size, ground clearance, and SUV-styled looks rather than outright performance.

What do you give up when buying a Renault car under Rs 5 lakh?

Since the Kwid Evolution 1.0 manual is the only variant available within a strict Rs 5 lakh budget, it would be better to know what you can get by investing around Rs 15,000 more (based on ex-showroom price) and opting for the Climber trim.

 

  • The Evolution 1.0 comes only with front power windows, manually adjustable ORVMs, and no steering-mounted controls. The Climber adds all three.
  • A reversing camera and a rear parcel shelf are exclusive to the Climber trim. The Evolution 1.0 misses both.
  • The Climber trim is equipped with 6 airbags, but the Evolution 1.0 MT has only two.

It is, but only based on the ex-showroom price. Once you add RTO, insurance, and other fees, it does not stay under Rs 5 lakh.

Boot space is a genuine strength of Renault cars under a 5 lakh budget. The Kwid offers  270 litres of boot space, which is larger than what the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and S-Presso offers.

If your budget is a hard Rs 5 lakh ceiling, and your main priority is ground clearance and boot space, then yes, you should opt for the Renault car within this budget.

For a first-time buyer with a Rs 4-5 lakh budget, city use and occasional long drives, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno or Toyota Glanza automatic is the safest and most sensible choice. Both use a simple AMT gearbox, which is not the smoothest but is reliable, easy to maintain and well-suited to city driving. Maruti's service network is the strongest in the country, and Toyota's service experience is also excellent, so long-term ownership is unlikely to throw up surprises. The Baleno and Glanza are also among the most spacious premium hatchbacks, with good rear seat comfort and easy ingress and egress for elderly parents.The Hyundai i20 Elite automatic is also a good option, and it has a CVT, which is smoother than Maruti's AMT. However, the Baleno/Glanza's lower running costs and wider service reach give them the edge in this budget.The Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger are not bad cars, but their service networks are not as extensive, and long-term ownership confidence is not as strong as Maruti or Toyota in this price range. If you want a slightly higher seat for your parents, consider the Maruti Ignis AMT; however, the Baleno is roomier inside. Alternatively, consider a slightly older Brezza.Overall, the Baleno or Glanza automatic is the best fit for your needs. I am using two wheeler pulsar dtsi 150 i am planning to buy my first car as i do not have hands on driving regularly i am thinking to buy second hand car with max budget if 3 to 5 lacks and after become expert in driving will think on purchasing new car, plan is to learn the car on second hand and sell it which will reduce my cost also i get hands on, dilemma is if i buy new car under 10l which i can afford will give me couple year warranty and insurance as well so while becoming handson i will lso get not much maintenance cost so here i confused new or old, also i am preffering suv type cars choices in new are brezza, creta, seltos. I found renault duster in 2.55 lacks third owner 2013 car will this type suitable for my requirements or should i move for any other bests available? What to choose please help

Go for a clean Maruti Wagon R VXi manual from a trusted seller; it is the easiest first car to live with under your budget and will help you build confidence fast. The Wagon R sits a little taller, so you step in and out easily and see the road clearly, which really calms nerves when you are new. The steering is light, the clutch is easy, and the gear shifts are simple, so city drives feel stress-free. For your once-a-month highway run, it cruises calmly at normal speeds. The AC is strong, and you will find Maruti service and parts almost anywhere, which keeps running costs low even if you use the car only sometimes.One thing to be aware of is that older Wagon Rs do not have many safety features by today’s standards. So, look for a car with at least a driver's airbag and ABS if possible. Also, it can lean a bit in fast turns, so do not push it hard on the highway.If you want something newer for the same money, a Renault Kwid 1.0 manual is worth a look; it feels nice to drive and has good ground clearance, but it is narrower for four adults. When you test drive, practice a tight U-turn, reverse into a parking spot, and do a short highway stretch. Buy the car that feels easiest to handle and has clear service records, even if it is a year older or a trim lower.

My budget is around Rs 3 lakh, and I am looking for a family hatchback primarily for city commuting, for a family of four. Most of the options I am finding have been driven over 1,00,000 km and are usually second or third owner cars. My preference is for a Hyundai Eon or i10, but I am not getting a good deal. What should I ideally check while buying? Also, the car should be registered in 2016 or later.

You can check out the pre-owned hatchback at Spinny. For your Rs. 3 lakh budget, you should find models like a Renault Kwid and Maruti Suzuki Celerio that would meet your mileage and 'build year' criteria.You could also consider looking at older cars, as these are all checked and tested and come with a warranty. Moreover, while they may be older in age, you should be able to find a Hyundai Eon or i10 with lower mileage and a single-owner driven.Also, remember that when buying used, it all dependent on stock, which changes almost daily, so wait a while and keep checking for cars until you find the one that you are happy with.

The Renault Kwid would be a good option for you. As far as AMTs go, the Kwid's gearbox does the job, but the car itself will feel like a bit of an upgrade over your current Maruti Alto. The Kwid has a few SUV-like design traits, the ground clearance is good, as is the ride, and you will get a version with an in-built touchscreen too.Bear in mind, though, that the gear selector on the AMT Kwid is a rotary dial and not a traditional gear lever, and this may feel odd to begin with. When buying used, make sure you buy from a reputed reseller for extra peace of mind.
