The MG Hector is a tech-laden, large and spacious SUV. It has a voluminous 587-litre boot, so luggage space won't be an issue, and what's nice is that it can even be had with a third row of seats in the form of the Hector Plus.This MG car stands out for its spacious and comfortable cabin, lengthy features list and absorbent low-speed ride. As for cons, it's not engaging to drive, and the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol CVT is thirsty, returning just 8.3kpl in the city and 9.6kpl on the highway in our fuel efficiency tests. The MG Hector price starts at 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Hi, I currently drive a Kia Sonet HTX iMT, which I purchased in December 2020. It has covered around 46,500km so far, with an annual running of approximately 10,000km. My current daily usage is 34km, mainly on the highway, as my office is in an industrial area. I am now looking to upgrade to a mid-size SUV with an automatic transmission. My priorities are a feature-rich car with a 5-star safety rating, good mileage, and enough space for a family of four, with occasional seating for six people. My expected usage will be around 80% city and 20% highway driving in the future. My budget is around Rs 21 lakh, although I can stretch it slightly for a better overall package. Please suggest some suitable options.

Given your requirements, the best option is the Hyundai Alcazar petrol DCT. It's available as a six- or seven-seater, giving you the flexibility you need when your extended family joins you on your journeys, and its 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine is relatively fuel efficient for a car of its size. The dual-clutch automatic is smooth enough, though it can be a bit clunky at low speeds if not driven smoothly and carefully. Also worth noting is that even the base model petrol-AT Alcazar costs around Rs 21 lakh on road, and the Alcazar has not been tested by any NCAP authority.The next best option is not an SUV but arguably a more practical option - the Kia Carens Clavis. It uses the same engine and gearbox in a lighter package with more space on the inside. Other 7-seat SUV options with more space - like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari, Mahindra Scorpio-N and MG Hector Plus are available, but are nowhere near as fuel-efficient and will be out of your budget as well. All things considered, the Hyundai Alcazar is your best option.

With an on-road budget of ₹22 lakh, I want to buy an SUV in the next 4-5 months that is fun and punchy with reasonable fuel efficiency. I don’t want a Maruti car because the hybrids compromise boot space, and the others aren’t engaging to drive. My main requirements are good rear seat space and an enjoyable driving experience. The MG Hector and Tata Sierra have some variants that fit the bill, but they’re gas guzzlers. Apart from those, are there any other models that fit the bill?

The most fun-to-drive SUVs in your budget are the 1.5-litre Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq twins, which are very engaging thanks to their brilliant dynamics and a powerful, punchy engine. Both are due for a facelift, and the upgraded Kushaq is just around the corner and scheduled to launch on January 20th 2026. The Volkswagen Taigun facelift will come a month later. Both these SUVs will see some significant enhancements to the air conditioning and interiors. Top-end variants will come with rear massage seats, a first in the segment. However, one weakness is the rear seat space, which is relatively narrow and best for four. Therefore, if this is a deal-breaker for you, you could consider the Tata Sierra. It is fantastically spacious, has superb ride and handling and an all-new 1.5 petrol engine, which is smooth, punchy and fairly efficient too. The Sierra is not as engaging to drive as the Kushaq and Taigun, as it is heavier and has a relaxed power delivery. We would rule out the MG Hector in your case as it is too big, it's not a very engaging car to drive, and as you said, the MG car guzzles fuel. The MG Hector price starts at 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

What also strengthens Hector's case is that ride comfort at low city speeds is plush. The Hector petrol makes sense given that you aren’t looking for a vehicle for city driving. Do bear in mind that the Hector petrol's fuel economy is poor. There are also other options that deliver a good rear seat experience.
