You can also get a Hyundai Grand i10 Nios with a four-cylinder petrol engine which is more refined, and its controls are smoother than the Tata's. The Nios also has better interior quality and fit-finish.

For elderly parents it’s the easiest to get in and out of, thanks to the tall seat and wide doors, and its boot is the biggest in your Rs. 6-7 lakh band, so weekend luggage is no fuss. The automatic is an AMT or automated manual transmission, which is not as smooth and seamless as other types of automatics but as as far as AMT's go it does the job quite well, plus it delivers a very good mileage. Just know it feels light and a bit bouncy at higher highway speeds, so keep cruising sensible. If he wants something that feels tougher on the highway, the Tata Tiago AMT is the next best fit. It rides better and feels more solid, but the seat is a bit lower and the boot is smaller than the Wagon R.

For a 17 km city run, it gives you the upright SUV feel and visibility you want, yet stays small and easy to park, and it rides over speed breakers and broken roads far better than your Alto. It also feels like a solid upgrade inside and has a strong safety rating, while running costs stay reasonable.Be clear on one thing, though: its 1.2-litre engine is fine in town but not very quick on highways. If you often do fast trips with family, the turbo petrol will be a better choice. If that exceeds your budget, then the Fronx turbo manual is a good alternative. Renault Kiger is a good value, and the turbo is fun, though the cabin feels a bit budget and the brand’s network is thinner. The Wagon R remains the cheapest and simplest step up, but it won't feel like a significant enough step up from your Alto. The cars in my mind are Creta, Seltos, Kushaq, Taigun and Elevate. I mostly drive within the city (Hyderabad and Mumbai) and 1-2 long drives per month. I am looking for an all-rounder vehicle which gives me a good driving experience, efficiency and accommodates a family of 4-5. I have gone through all vehicles, but couldn't decide on one( planning to test drive all vehicles soon). I also heard that Creta and Elevate are getting an upgrade/facelift by the end of this year. Should I wait for them to decide or go ahead with these? Looking forward for expert opinion.

The 1.5 petrol with the automatic is easy in traffic, returns sensible mileage, and the light controls make it a painless jump from the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. Cabin space and boot are genuinely family-friendly for 4-5 with luggage, and higher trims add city-friendly kit like the 360 camera and ventilated seats that you will actually use in summer. The only real trade-off is a slightly firm low-speed ride, and that top trims can stretch the budget.The Hyundai Creta is a close second if you prefer a softer, comfier feel. The Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are the most fun to drive, but the rear seat and boot are tighter for five. The high seating is a boon and will put you at immediate ease in the car. Options that meet your requirements within a Rs 10 lakh budget include the Hyundai Exter, Tata Punch and Citroen C3. The Tata Punch offers more of what you need. It's got the widest cabin (though it's still not ideal as a 5 seater) and packs in all the features that you need, and then a whole lot more. The Citroen C3 makes a compelling case for itself with the best engines, well-sorted ride and handling and the cabin experience is also vastly improved with the recent feature update. However, it's not quite as roomy as the Punch, and Citroen's service network is also not as widespread as Tata or Hyundai's.The Hyundai Exter is an easy-going option that's also worth a look.

The best part is that the Punch is available in a wide variety of flavours, and since you haven't specified a budget, there's bound to be something for you. There are many variants to choose from, as well as petrol, turbo petrol, CNG, manual gearbox, AMT and even an electric version, in case that suits you.Two things to note: the base petrol engine (or its CNG counterpart) isn’t very quick for fast highway runs, and the automatic can feel a little jerky when moving slowly; the manual is smoother in traffic. If you want the same easy cabin access but a smoother engine and gearbox, look at the Hyundai Exter mid trim.
