If you can install a charger at home, though, the Mahindra XEV 9S could be a great alternative since your usage is primarily in the city. The base Pack One Above with the larger 79kWh battery pack fits within your budget and comes with all the essential comfort and tech features. In our real-world tests, we managed a combined 477.5km on a single charge, though that figure will drop sharply on the highway with a full load of passengers and luggage. Your highway trips will therefore need some planning around charging stops.If that seems like too much effort, then the XUV 7XO diesel automatic makes the most sense. It feels easier to drive in town than the Mahindra Scorpio N, with lighter controls and a smoother driving experience. Ride comfort and cabin noise levels are better, too, which your family will appreciate.A couple of things to note: with all three rows up, boot space is limited. The third row is also a bit tight for taller passengers, so check if it works for your family.Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis/Carens Clavis EV. It keeps the tough, go‑anywhere feel you’re used to from your Classic Scorpio, but it is much more comfortable and safer now. The 4X4 with a low gear and terrain modes lets you tackle slush, rocks and steep trails with confidence, while the strong build and good ground clearance suits rough roads. On long highways, it cruises calmly and feels steadier than your old car, and in the city, the steering is lighter, so it’s easier to thread through traffic.Know that the third row is tight, and with all seats up, the boot is small, so luggage needs a roof carrier or folding the last row. Also, at low speeds on broken roads, you still feel some movement. If you want a softer, quieter cabin and a more refined experience, look at the Jeep Meridian 4x4. While it may not be as rugged as the Mahindra Scorpio N, off-road ability is good, and its ride and stability are appreciably better.

Since you already own a Renault, the new Duster would be a great pick. With mostly rural roads, about 10,000 km a year and a Rs 20 lakh cap, you can opt for the Duster 1.3 turbo-petrol with either the manual or the DCT, depending on your preference.The 1.3 petrol feels strong and punchy once you get past the initial turbo lag, and the DCT is almost torque-converter smooth. The manual has a satisfying clutch and shifter action, though turbo lag feels slightly more pronounced with this gearbox. It stays steady at speed and the steering gives good confidence, so it will feel like a big step up from your Kwid. Ground clearance is good and the suspension handles broken patches well, so you won’t have to slow to a crawl for every rut, yet it still feels tight and enjoyable on a twisty road.Two things to note: it is not a true off-roader, so avoid deep slush and very uneven fields; and Renault’s dealer reach in smaller towns can be limited. Since you already own one, though, that should not be a major concern.If your routes are very rough and you often need to go into fields, look at the Mahindra Scorpio N instead. It is tougher and sits higher, but it is not as nice to drive on smooth roads as the Duster.

If performance is your biggest priority and you still want a large family SUV without stretching the budget too far, the Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol automatic is the one we would pick. Its 2.0 turbo petrol feels the strongest and most effortless in this group, whether you are overtaking on the highway or driving with a full load of passengers. The automatic gearbox also suits the engine well and makes daily driving much easier, while the cabin itself feels spacious, comfortable and well-equipped. Even in lower or mid variants, you still get the same strong engine, which helps keep costs under control.The Hyundai Alcazar 1.5 turbo petrol DCT is the more polished and city-friendly alternative. It feels lighter to drive, and refinement is excellent, but the DCT gearbox is not always the smoothest at crawling city speeds and can feel slightly jerky in stop-and-go traffic. It also does not have the same effortless punch or road presence as the Mahindra when fully loaded. The MG Hector petrol is spacious and comfortable, but performance is nowhere close to the Mahindra, and despite having a smaller engine, fuel efficiency is not one of its strengths either.The Tata Harrier and Tata Safari are now available with Tata’s newer 1.5 turbo petrol engine, but performance is adequate. It still does not feel as effortless or as strong as the Mahindra’s larger 2.0 turbo petrol, especially in a full-size SUV application. The Mahindra Scorpio-N petrol is also very powerful and rugged, but compared to the XUV 7XO, it feels less polished and more old school in everyday driving.

Mahindra will continue updating the mHawk diesel, but don’t expect major gains in power or torque going forward. The engine is already highly optimised in its current form, delivering strong performance across models like the Scorpio N and XUV range, and it is close to its practical limits in terms of balancing performance, reliability and emissions. What will change is the focus. Future updates will be driven more by stricter emission norms and efficiency targets rather than outright performance, so expect refinements, cleaner running and possibly some level of electrification rather than big power jumps.At the same time, Mahindra is still deeply invested in diesel, and it remains a core part of their SUV lineup, so it is not going away anytime soon. They will continue to evolve the mHawk as long as regulations allow, especially because diesel still makes the most sense for torque-heavy SUVs. However, the long-term direction is clear. With tightening norms and the company’s strong push into EVs, diesel will gradually become a smaller part of the portfolio rather than being replaced overnight.

It pulls strongly at low speed, so steep climbs with a full family and luggage feel easy, and its tougher build and 4x4 give you extra grip and confidence on broken roads or wet, uneven patches. On long highway and hill runs, the diesel will also use less fuel than the petrol in a big 7-seater like this.The one thing to watch with any new diesel is the exhaust filter. Lots of very short, stop-start trips can clog it over time. Your monthly highway run should help, but try to give the car a 20-30 minute continuous drive at a steady speed every couple of weeks to keep it happy. Also expect a bit more engine noise at idle than a petrol.If you want a softer, more family-friendly feel and mostly stick to good roads, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic is the other strong choice from your list.
