For Bangalore, I am considering the Lexus ES 350h, Mercedes-Benz E 200, or GLC 300. The car will mostly be chauffeur-driven. Which one would be the better choice?

For a mostly chauffeur-driven owner in Bangalore, the sedans you've shortlisted make the most sense. Between the two, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is undoubtedly the most popular car in its class, and for good reason, in your case, we think the Lexus ES 350h might be a better bet. The ES 350h is a hybrid, which makes it particularly well-suited to Bangalore's traffic conditions, offering excellent fuel efficiency and a very refined, quiet driving experience. The rear seat is spacious and comfortable, and Lexus' reputation for reliability and low maintenance costs adds to the long-term ownership appeal. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class 200 is also a strong contender, offering a slightly more luxurious and spacious cabin and, crucially, superb back seats that recline quite far, but it does not offer the same efficiency or refinement in stop-and-go traffic, and this will add up in the long run. The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, while a good SUV, is not the best fit for a chauffeur-driven owner as the rear seat is not as comfortable as the ES or E-Class, and the ride is firmer. The ES 350h strikes the best balance of comfort, efficiency and long-term peace of mind.

People say the Lexus ES is essentially a slightly more luxurious version of the Camry. Is it worth paying such a huge premium for the Lexus, and why? The Camry is a CBU, hence priced exorbitantly. Does Toyota plan to make it in India?

The Lexus ES and Toyota Camry do share the same basic platform and hybrid powertrain, but the ownership experience is very different. The Lexus car, being positioned as a more premium product, has a more luxurious interior with higher-quality materials, and better sound insulation and refined levels. Lexus also offers a stronger brand image and a more exclusive ownership experience, which is a big part of what you are paying for.The Toyota car, on the other hand, is the more rational choice. It offers the same hybrid powertrain, it is still very luxurious, and has a very comfortable ride at a much lower price point.Just a quick clarification: Toyota has been assembling the Camry at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka since 2013, and like other gens, even this one is brought to India as a CKD, not a full import.

I am planning to sell my Hyundai i20 and am confused between the Lexus ES and the Honda City Hybrid. Please advise which one I should buy.

There is a huge difference between the Honda City Hybrid and the Lexus ES 300h. Though both are hybrids, the City is a mainstream mid-size sedan, and the Lexus ES is a luxury car.The Lexus is in a different league compared to the Honda car and costs around three times more than the City hybrid. So, if you can afford the Lexus, go ahead and buy it. It will offer you a far more luxurious experience and, thanks to its relatively low cost of ownership, is remarkably light on the pocket for a Rs 70 lakh-plus luxury car.

I have been eyeing the BMW 330i LWB for quite some time. The recent launch of Lexus ES 350 has got me thinking. My primary requirement is a chauffer driven car, with rear seat space, comfort and luxury. How advantageous is Lexus over the BMW in terms of overall cost of ownership?

Verified

For a primarily chauffeur-driven requirement with rear seat space, comfort and luxury as the top priorities, the Lexus ES 350h is the more compelling choice. The ES 350h is a full-size luxury sedan with a genuinely spacious rear seat, excellent ride comfort and a very refined hybrid powertrain that delivers a smooth, quiet and effortless experience. The hybrid system also brings a clear advantage in terms of fuel efficiency, especially in city driving, which helps keep running costs lower over the long term. The BMW 330i LWB is a very good car and the long-wheelbase version does offer improved rear seat space, but it is still fundamentally a driver's car at heart. The rear seat is comfortable, but it does not quite match the sheer space, comfort and sense of occasion that the Lexus offers. The BMW's turbo petrol engine is also less efficient in city driving and overall running costs are likely to be higher over a long ownership period.Where the BMW car does have an advantage is in driving dynamics and overall engagement, but for a chauffeur-driven brief that is less relevant. The Lexus car also has a strong reputation for reliability and ownership experience, which further strengthens its case.Overall, the Lexus ES 350h is the better fit for your requirements. It offers a more spacious and comfortable rear seat, lower running costs thanks to the hybrid system and a more relaxed and luxurious ownership experience. The BMW 330i LWB remains a very good car, but it is better suited to buyers who want to spend more time behind the wheel.

I am planning to buy the new Lexus ES 350h but I am confused as it is a completely new design and unlike the typical Lexus. I need your advice and suggestions for any other cars under 90 lakh (on-road) budget.

The new Lexus ES 350h is looks quite different to the previous ES, but the proposition remains the same. It is now a much larger car, with a more imposing design and a significantly more powerful hybrid powertrain. It is no longer the understated luxury sedan the previous ES was, and this is Lexus's new, bolder approach that's unfolding across its model range. Inside too, the relatively old-school use of wood, metal and multiple layers has been traded for a cleaner, minimalist look that's more futuristic and somewhat generic. However, the luxury prospect hasn't changed too much, with high-quality materials, tactile surfaces and even more features. And since it is larger, cabin space has improved too. If you are looking for a more traditional luxury sedan experience, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB is the better choice. It offers a more refined and comfortable ride, a more understated design and a more traditional luxury car ownership experience. The E-Class LWB is also a better chauffeur-driven car, with a more spacious and comfortable rear seat. If you are looking for a more performance-oriented luxury sedan, the BMW 5 Series LWB is worth considering. It offers a more engaging driving experience and a more dynamic character. The Lexus ES may look very different now, but if you're interested, it's worth at least a test drive, because its proposition of refined, hassle-free, efficient Japanese luxury hasn't changed.
