The next-gen Lexus ES sedan has been revealed at the ongoing Auto Shanghai motor show in China. It features two powertrain options, including hybrid and, for the first time, all electric. Lexus claims that the new ES has better ride quality and cabin quietness than its predecessor, and has been designed to offer “first-class comfort for everyone on board”.
- New ES is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model
- It's built on the TNGA-K platform, which is compatible with both hybrid and battery electric powertrains
- Electric versions offer up to 685km range (CLTC)
- Battery capacity has not yet been disclosed

Electric: FWD 350e and AWD 550e variants

The Lexus ES EV is going to be sold in two variants: the 350e, which produces 224.3hp and has front-wheel drive, and the 342.6hp 550e with all-wheel drive. As per Lexus, the range measured under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) is up to 685km for the 350e and up to 610km for the 550e. While Lexus has not disclosed the battery capacity, it is likely to borrow the RZ SUV’s 77kWh pack. The 0-100kph acceleration time is 8.9 seconds for the 350e and 5.9 seconds for the 550e.
Hybrid: 300h and 350h variants
2.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine.
The ES 300h will get two naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine options: 2-litre (197.1hp) and 2.5-litre (201.2hp). Meanwhile, the ES 350h will only have the larger 2.5-litre petrol engine but in a higher 247.4hp tune. Both engines are paired with an eCVT, sending power to either the front or all four wheels. Range and hybrid battery charging time (10-80 percent) have not yet been disclosed.

Many of the design elements are inspired by the LF-ZC concept. Visually, the electric ES stands apart from the hybrid mainly with its closed-off front-end nose, while the hybrid version features a slim grille. Even the massive signature spindle grille is gone, and the bumper is flanked by new LED headlights. The L-shaped daytime running lamps have been retained, and below them sit turn indicators in an inverted L shape.
The profile section is full of aerodynamic lines, and the doors feature electrically operated handles. The refreshed alloy wheels in dual-tone will be offered with tyre sizes from 18 to 21 inches, depending on the market. While the overall silhouette appears familiar, the latest ES has a more rakish rear roofline. The rear section is also completely new and features a connected LED bar for the first time, in the middle of which sits an illuminated LEXUS lettermark (in all powertrains). Also, the bumper gets L-shaped lights on both ends.

New Lexus ES interior
Bigger 14-inch touchscreen
Its minimalist dashboard design is a complete departure from the previous model. Most of the controls have been shifted to the larger 14-inch touchscreen (with OTA updates support), next to which is a 12.3-inch driver’s display. Other features include a Mark Levinson sound system, electrochromic panoramic glass roof, front seats with boss mode and rear reclining seats with an ottoman function. Lexus claimed that noise reduction was prioritised with "improved door sealing and the use of glass with high sound insulation quality in the front doors". The new ES also gets the Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 with adaptive cruise control, pre-collision safety, blind-spot monitor and lane-departure assist features.
