I am planning to buy a new 7-seater and am confused between the Kia Carens Clavis and Maruti Ertiga, both with naturally aspirated petrol engines. I do not like the new air-conditioning setup in the Ertiga. Could you advise on the Carens Clavis in terms of mileage, reliability, and long-term service costs?

The Kia Carens Clavis is a great 7-seater. It is very spacious, and even tall adults can sit in the last row without any issue. The cabin feels very premium, with high-quality materials used, and even the lower variants offer impressive standard equipment, which makes the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol versions excellent value for money. The 1.5L petrol engine is smooth and refined, and in our tests, it accelerated quickly than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, indicating better drivability too. This engine is shared with the Carens, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Verna, and it has been quite reliable so far. Service and maintenance costs are also on par with, or even lower than, its rivals.

I’m planning to buy either the Kia Carens Clavis or the Hyundai Alcazar. Please advise which one would be better.

Assuming you’re considering these two models because they offer a third row of seats, the Kia Carens Clavis would be the better choice. This Kia car offers easier access to the third row thanks to its electric one-touch tumble function, and space and comfort at the back are superior. Carens Clavis and Hyundai Alcazar share their turbo-petrol and diesel engines, so there isn’t much difference in performance.

I want to buy a seven-seater car for my family. It will be used by my uncle and me, and my budget is Rs. 25 lakh. I am looking for an automatic transmission, a panoramic sunroof, and good fuel efficiency.

Go for the Kia Carens Clavis diesel automatic. It is the most sensible and well-rounded choice for your requirements. The Carens is a genuinely spacious seven-seater with a comfortable third row, which is important when the car will be shared between families. The diesel automatic is the right powertrain for strong fuel efficiency and effortless performance, especially on highways and with a full load. The Carens also comes well equipped with features like a panoramic sunroof, and Kia’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The only real drawback is that the Carens does not have the same SUV-like road presence as some rivals, but as a practical family car it is hard to fault. If you want something with a more rugged SUV feel, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic is worth considering, but mileage would be lower. The Carens is the better all-round family car.

I have been driving a Renault Triber RXZ AMT for a long time. However, the transmission feels sluggish, and the car feels underpowered. My driving is 80% on highways and 20% in the city, with an annual running of approximately 8,000 km. Safety is a major concern for me. Please suggest the best 7-seater family car options under Rs. 20 lakh.

Given your usage pattern of 80% highway driving, the Renault Triber's limitations are understandable. The AMT gearbox is not the most responsive and the engine does feel underpowered.Go for the Kia Clavis HTK+ Turbo DCT. It is a comfortable, spacious seven-seater which delivers strong performance that you will certainly appreciate on your long drives. The HTK+ is well-equipped too, and the interior feels quite premium too. As far as safety goes, the Clavis is equipped with all standard features like 6 airbags, ESP, hill-start assist, ABS with EBD, etc. Overall, it'll feel like a huge step up over your Renault Triber AMT.

Hi Autocar, I am looking at the XUV 7XO base diesel variant. I do not want heavy features like a sunroof, ventilated seats, etc., as they are a waste of money in my opinion. Please suggest whether it is a good choice or if there are any alternatives in the Rs 18-20 lakh on-road budget. Also suggest whether I should go for petrol or diesel, and whether any other 7-seater options are available in this budget.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel base variant. It is one of the best value-for-money 7-seaters in your budget range, and the base variant is actually a smart choice because it offers the strong fundamentals of the car without paying extra for features you do not want. The diesel engine is the right choice here; it is a strong, refined unit with plenty of torque, and it makes the most sense for a large 7-seater SUV, especially if you do a mix of city and highway driving. The petrol is a good engine too, but it won't be as efficient as the diesel. If you are open to alternatives, the Kia Carens Clavis is worth a look. It is a more practical, family-focused 7-seater with a genuinely usable third row, but it does not have the same SUV appeal or road presence as the XUV 7XO.Overall, the XUV 7XO diesel base is the best fit for your requirements. It gives you a strong engine, a genuinely spacious 7-seater layout and good value for money without paying for features you do not want.
