Hi, I currently use a Grand i10 Nios and am planning to buy an SUV. My driving is mostly in the city, with occasional highway drives. I am looking for feature-rich interiors, good fuel economy, and decent on-road presence, while power is a secondary priority. My budget is ₹15-18 lakh.

Given your intended use, the Kia Seltos HTK (O) IVT is the one we would pick. It gives you a rich-feeling cabin and good features for the price, the IVT automatic (CVT in Kia terminology) is very smooth in traffic, and its size and styling give you the “bigger car” feel you want after a Grand i10 Nios. It will also return sensible fuel economy in the city if you drive with a light foot, and it stays stable on the highway at normal cruising speeds. It's not the punchiest powertrain, but as you've mentioned, that's not a priority here. If fuel economy matters more than cabin flash, look at the Maruti Victoris ZXi AT. It is not as fancy inside as the Seltos, nor as spacious, but it is very easy to drive in town, uses less fuel in daily use, and has a calm, comfortable ride for family trips.

I have been your regular follower for more than two decades. I’m confused between the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Asta AMT and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis Alpha AGS. This car will primarily be driven by my wife. Please share your views.

Thank you for being our long-time reader and viewer; we really appreciate it!While both cars are a little old now, they’re still very competent at what they do, and each has its own small advantages. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios offers a better back seat and boot, in case that is your priority. However, if it is not, we would recommend the Maruti Suzuki Ignis for a few reasons. It’s more fuel-efficient, with an ARAI-rated Maruti Ignis mileage of 20.89 kmpl. its slightly taller stance makes ingress and egress easier with great forward visibility. Plus, it’s a bit more compact, which really helps with maneuverability in the city.

I’m buying my first car and trying to decide between the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. My priority is rear-seat comfort for passengers aged 60+ years, mostly for intercity driving and occasional highway trips. Kindly suggest which of the two would be more suitable. Thank you.

Both the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, being hatchbacks, aren’t ideal for rear-seat comfort, especially for elderly passengers. However, between the two, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has a wider cabin and would suit your needs better.Alternatively, you could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R or the Tata Punch, both of which are easier to get in and out of.

I'm considering purchasing a compact car with an AMT transmission and am evaluating the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Maruti Swift. Given that I primarily drive in Bangalore's heavy traffic, which of these two offers a smoother and less jerky driving experience?

Verified

Go for the Grand i10 Nios. It’s a very user-friendly hatchback. Its more compact dimensions make it relatively easier to drive and manoeuvre. Plus, the engine and AMT deliver smoother performance, adding to a more comfortable and effortless driving experience.

I own a 2017 Datsun Redi-GO, which has been driven only 12,000 km so far. Since Datsun has exited the Indian market, would it be better to sell it and buy a new car? I am considering the Baleno and the Grand i10 Nios. Which one would you recommend?

Verified

With just 12,000 km on your 2017 Datsun Redigo, the car is still relatively fresh mechanically, but the bigger issue is Datsun’s exit from India. While basic servicing and spares are still available through Nissan, long-term parts availability and resale value will only get tougher with time. If you plan to keep the car for another 5-7 years, it is still usable, but if you are already considering an upgrade, now is a sensible time to move on before resale value drops further.Between the Maruti Baleno and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, the Baleno is the better upgrade. It offers a more spacious cabin, a larger boot, a more comfortable ride and a stronger resale value. The Grand i10 Nios is a good city car, but the Baleno feels like a more substantial step up from the Redigo. Go for the Baleno petrol manual or AMT, depending on your budget and driving preference.

I want to replace my manual transmission Swift hatchback with an automatic hatchback within a budget of Rs. 8 lakh. My usage is mostly in the city, often in dense traffic, so good fuel economy is a priority. Please suggest the best options.

Verified

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT. It fits under Rs. 8 lakh, is one of the most fuel-efficient petrol automatics you can buy, and its light steering and small size make life easy in dense city traffic and tight parking. You are moving from a Swift, so expect a simpler cabin and a bit less space, but the Celerio makes up for it with very low running costs and easy driving. The automatic is fine for the city, just know that at crawling speeds it can feel a little jerky if you stomp the accelerator - be gentle, and it’s smooth enough. If you want something closer to your Swift in size and feel, and can stretch a bit, the new Swift VXi automatic or Hyundai Grand i10 Nios automatic feel nicer inside and rides better, but you will spend a bit more.

I am 73 years old. With our children living abroad, I am looking to buy an automatic car that both my spouse and I can drive comfortably. I have shortlisted the Hyundai Exter, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Ease of driving in traffic and parking are important factors for us. My budget is around Rs. 10 lakh. Our current vehicle is a Hyundai i10. Considering our requirements, which of these would be the best choice? Thank you.

Verified

Since you already have a Hyundai i10, we would recommend moving up to another Hyundai, so that you continue in the same service network. You can even try and ask your dealership for a loyalty bonus or exchange offer at the time of purchase. While the Grand i10 Nios comes across as the VFM choice, in that you can get a fully loaded Asta AMT variant well within your Rs. 10 lakh budget. If that's okay with you, it should still feel like a sufficient upgrade from your older i10, with considerably more space. However, a real update would be the Exter, which though based on the Grand i10 Nios, is newer, more spacious and crucially gets you a bit more ground clearance as a buffer against poor roads. Ingress and egress are easy in the Nios but easier still in the Exter, and it recently got an update which has kept things relatively fresh. The downside is you won't get a fully loaded AMT variant in your budget, but you don't miss out on too much. Another alternative is the Tata Punch, which feels a bit more solid, but its powertrain is nowhere as smooth as the Hyundai's 1.2-litre petrol and AMT combination.

I am looking for an automatic car (not an AMT, DSG, or DCT). My budget is around Rs. 10-12 lakh. The car will primarily be used for city driving and should also offer good fuel efficiency. I have shortlisted Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz Option IVT, Honda Amaze VX CVT, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi AT. I am inclined towards the Brezza, but there is no clarity on when the facelift will be launched. Please suggest what I should do.

Verified

Of your shortlisted cars, the Honda Amaze CVT feels like the best fit. It has a spacious interior, it's excellent on mileage and is compact and easy enough to drive around town. And instead of the VX model you have suggested, you can easily get the top-end ZX well within your budget. Did you mean the Hyundai i20 Sportz (O) IVT? The Grand i10 Nios uses an AMT, which is one of the gearboxes you have ruled out. The i20 is a great option, and in your budget you can even move up to the higher-spec Asta (O) IVT variant. It's nice to drive and has a premium interior, but is not as spacious, practical or fuel efficient as the Honda Amaze CVT.The Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT, while a more spacious and powerful option, is not available in your budget, and even the lower spec VXI AT will exceed it. The facelifted version is expected to launch soon, and you can expect prices to go up further. If you are willing to extend your budget, it might be worth checking out.Another option you can consider is, the Nissan Magnite Kuro 1.0 Turbo CVT. It's spacious, smooth, loaded with features and comes with a punchy turbo-petrol that is more powerful than the Amaze or i20, and has more torque than the Brezza. It is a great value-for-money option, but bear in mind, Nissan's service network is not as wide as the others'.

I want to buy the new 2026 facelift version of the Tata Tiago. Is it a good option within this budget, or should I consider any other brands?

Verified
5w

The 2026 Tiago gets more cosmetic enhancements, new interiors and more features, and like the outgoing car, it feels very user-friendly, thanks to its light controls, compact size and good visibility all around. If you like the Tiago, go ahead with it.For similar money, you'll also get a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, which has more cabin space, and its engines are also smoother and more efficient. You can also get a Hyundai Grand i10 Nios with a four-cylinder petrol engine which is more refined, and its controls are smoother than the Tata's. The Nios also has better interior quality and fit-finish.

My wife has been driving an Activa for the past 10 years. Now I would like to buy her a new AMT car. Which car would be good for a first-time car user? Are the Grand i10 Nios and Baleno good options?

Verified
6w

Of the two options on your shortlist, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios automatic is the better choice. It is a small, friendly car to learn in, with light steering, good all‑round view, and a tight turning circle, so parking and U‑turns feel simple. The engine and automatic are smooth at low speeds, and it handles bumps well, which helps in traffic and on broken roads.Know that the Nios is not as roomy as the Baleno, and the boot is smaller. Also, like most budget automatics of this type, you can feel a slight jerk when crawling and stopping in heavy traffic.Pick the Maruti Suzuki Baleno automatic only if you want more cabin space and a calmer feel on occasional highway runs. It is the bigger car and feels more solid at higher speeds, but it is a bit longer to judge in tight lanes, and the view out is not as open as the Nios for a new driver. We'd also recommend you check out the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT. Like the Grand i10 Nios, the Swift is a friendly pick for a new driver. What works in favour of the Swift is that it's newer and has a more fuel-efficient engine too.
