Hi, We currently own a 2004 Hyundai Santro and are looking to upgrade to a new car suitable for my parents, who are around 55 years old. My father prefers the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT, as the car will be mainly used for city driving of around 500–700 km per month. In Bangalore, the on-road price for the Sportz (O) variant comes to approximately ₹8.8–9 lakh. Considering this price, are there any better alternatives we should consider, or would the Grand i10 Nios AMT be a good choice for our needs?

For your requirement, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz (O) AMT is a very sensible and well-suited choice. It is compact, easy to drive and park in city conditions like Bengaluru. The light steering, along with the AMT gearbox, makes stop-and-go traffic much less tiring, which is ideal for your parents. It also offers a comfortable ride and a familiar hatchback form factor, making it an easy upgrade from your current Santro.

Given your monthly running of 500-700 km, a small petrol automatic fits perfectly, and Hyundai’s strong service support adds to the peace of mind.

That said, one thing to be aware of is that AMT gearboxes can feel slightly jerky at low speeds. If smoothness and comfort are a higher priority, you could consider slightly stretching the budget for options with smoother automatic gearboxes like the Hyundai i20. It comes with a more refined IVT/CVT option and offers a more seamless driving experience.

If your parents would prefer a higher seating position for easier ingress and better visibility, the Hyundai Exter AMT is also worth considering as an alternative.

It's really hard to suggest a car without knowing a bit more about your requirements, like rear space requirements and the distance driven per month. Thus, as a good all-rounder for a small family, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta Plus AMT fits your brief best. Pick this variant because it gives you the most rear-seat space and a bigger, more useful boot than the other two, so adults sit more comfortably, and you pack more for trips. It also feels light and easy to drive in traffic, and the ride is calm over rough roads, which helps passengers, especially elders or kids.Two things to note: this automatic can feel a bit slow to pick up when you press the accelerator hard, and you will miss a few fancy features that sit on higher trims. If you drive with a full load on steep hills often, you may want to try it once to see if the response suits you.If you value tough build and the best ride on broken roads above all else, the Tata Punch Accomplished AMT is the second choice. It also has a smaller footprint for tight parking and a feature-rich cabin at a price like the Hyundai Exter HX6 AMT, too. Overall, for family comfort and everyday ease, go with the Fronx Delta Plus AMT.

I am from Goa, have sold my Celerio AMT & am planning to buy an automatic hatchback in the price bracket of ₹8.00 to ₹10.00 lakhs. My usage is about 50-60 Kms a day, mostly in the city with occasional highway runs. Would it be prudent to buy the existing Maruti Baleno or wait for the upcoming facelift, or go for the Hyundai i20 with the CVT(IVT)? My only grouse with the Baleno is that it's no longer available with the CVT, but the AMT. Also, neither of these cars is 5-star rated for safety, hence I was also thinking of the Tata Altroz DCT, but then it comes only with a 3-cylinder NA engine & not with the Turbo, what say?

You should go for the Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT for your next car. It costs just over Rs 10 lakh on-road, but it comes with a refined 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a seamless CVT automatic gearbox, which is what you're looking for. The Hyundai also has the nicest interior of the lot, a comfy ride and even though it hasn't been crash tested yet, it does come with 6 airbags, traction control and more safety features. Being a Hyundai, the i20 will also be reliable and stress-free to maintain. Alternatively, if safety is your top priority, go for the Tata Altroz DCA as it has received a 5-star crash safety rating from both Bharat and Global NCAP. Do note, the Altroz DCA won't be as smooth to drive as the i20 IVT, and as you mentioned, it only comes with a non-turbo, three-cylinder engine.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO turbo-petrol manual best fits your brief. It has a strong engine, so even with four passengers and weekend luggage, it should cruise on the highway without feeling strained. The cabin feels solid and well built. The rear seat is also slightly roomier than the other cars you mentioned. Its steering is light, and the ride quality is well suited to both city and highway use.A couple of things to note: its clutch pedal travel is long, which could take some getting used to in slow traffic, and its boot is on the smaller side compared to rivals.You could consider the Skoda Kylaq Classic Plus variant too, which is nice to drive, but it also feels safe and solid, just like how you'd expect a family car to be.

You’re after a no-drama, long-term family car that is easy to drive, comfortable and roomy. For that brief, the Honda Elevate VX CVT is a good fit. With four passengers, a fully loaded boot, the AC running, and driving conditions that include broken roads, ghats, and highways, which car performs better, the Citroen C3X Turbo AT or the Skoda Kylaq AT? If possible, please provide a back-to-back comparison review as well.

Both perform very well for your requirements, but overall, the Skoda Kylaq is the better choice. The Citroen C3 X has a slightly comfier ride quality, its AC performance is very strong, and its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is quite punchy. However, the Kylaq's 1.0 TSI engine is more powerful, and the 6-speed automatic gearbox has been tuned for even greater responses. As such, it will feel more eager on ghats and highways. It too has excellent suspension and absorbs bumps and broken roads well. Moreover, the Kylaq sits in a segment above and hence offers more space in the back seat and the boot, which will be useful for your passengers and luggage. Moreover, the build quality is stronger, the interior feels more upmarket, and though it may be more expensive, there are more features on offer than in the Citroen. Hence, we recommend that you go with the Skoda.

I own a Honda City 4th Generation and have been getting an average fuel efficiency of 16.1 km/l over 85,000 km. Would it be worth installing a CNG kit to improve the mileage further? Please suggest.

With the kind of mileage you are already seeing from your 4th generation Honda City, I would not rush to fit a CNG kit. Around 16 kpl over 85,000 km is actually a healthy real world figure for a petrol sedan, and since the City is known for its smoothness and refinement, adding an aftermarket CNG kit will inevitably change the character of the car. Honda does not offer a factory CNG option for the City, so any retrofit will be third party, which means compromises in boot space, some loss in outright performance and the added variable of installation quality and long term reliability. Honda also recommends using fuel that meets the vehicle specifications, and aftermarket modifications can complicate warranty or support considerations on newer cars.A CNG conversion only starts making strong financial sense if your running is very high and you plan to keep the car for several more years to recover the kit cost. If your annual usage is moderate, the payback period can be longer than expected. The only real case for going CNG here is if fuel cost reduction is your absolute top priority. Otherwise, given how well your City is already performing, I would leave it as is and enjoy the refinement rather than fixing something that is not really broken.
