Hi, We currently own a 2004 Hyundai Santro and are looking to upgrade to a new car suitable for my parents, who are around 55 years old. My father prefers the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT, as the car will be mainly used for city driving of around 500–700 km per month. In Bangalore, the on-road price for the Sportz (O) variant comes to approximately ₹8.8–9 lakh. Considering this price, are there any better alternatives we should consider, or would the Grand i10 Nios AMT be a good choice for our needs?

Given your intended use, the Kia Seltos HTK (O) IVT is the one we would pick. It gives you a rich-feeling cabin and good features for the price, the IVT automatic (CVT in Kia terminology) is very smooth in traffic, and its size and styling give you the “bigger car” feel you want after a Grand i10 Nios. It will also return sensible fuel economy in the city if you drive with a light foot, and it stays stable on the highway at normal cruising speeds. It's not the punchiest powertrain, but as you've mentioned, that's not a priority here. If fuel economy matters more than cabin flash, look at the Maruti Victoris ZXi AT. It is not as fancy inside as the Seltos, nor as spacious, but it is very easy to drive in town, uses less fuel in daily use, and has a calm, comfortable ride for family trips.

The Hyundai Exter is the one we think she should pick. If she's comfortable with an automatic gearbox, we would recommend one, as it will make life in the city much easier. On a budget of Rs 10 lakh, the HX6 AMT seems like the right fit. It falls in that price range and is equipped with enough creature comforts to make life a bit easier.It fits her brief because one sits higher than in most small cars, so the view out is clear, which helps a shorter driver judge gaps and turns. The Exter is small on the outside, and the steering is light, so parking and U-turns are simple even in crowded lanes. Hyundai’s AMT is smooth enough for daily use, and rear parking sensors are standard, which adds confidence when backing into tight slots.A couple of trade-offs to keep in mind. Like all AMTs, there is a small pause between gear changes if you press the accelerator hard, so quick moves need a gentle foot. The Hyundai i20 is the one that fits your brief best. Given your city-heavy use, we recommend an automatic, so look at an i20 with the 1.2 petrol and CVT (Hyundai calls it IVT), which feels very smooth in slow traffic. While it's tempting to go for the more powerful 1.0 turbo-petrol, its DCT gearbox is not as smooth as the CVT at low speeds, hence we don't recommend it. Also, while the i20 1.2 IVT Asta (O) could go out of your budget, we would recommend you to stretch it, as that will get you the Bose sound system, which sounds excellent. Hyundai resale is also strong in Mumbai, which meets your first priority. The Honda Amaze is easy to own and has good resale value too. It's reliable, good on maintenance, fuel efficient, fun to drive and spacious. But the interiors and music system are nothing to write home about. The Sonet, Venue and Kylaq are good options, but won't give you the kind of features and high-spec interior you are seeking in this budget. That said, when it comes to resale value, none are quite as good as Maruti cars, since that is your number one priority.

These setups are smoother, easier to drive in traffic and more predictable, which matters far more in city conditions than outright performance. So yes, in your case, NA engines are better suited than turbo petrol.The Hyundai Verna IVT stands out as the most well-rounded option for city driving. The engine is smooth, the IVT gearbox is very intuitive in stop-and-go traffic, and the overall driving experience is effortless. It feels refined and easy to live with daily.The Honda City Hybrid is worth considering if your running is high. It offers excellent fuel efficiency, strong performance and is very easy to drive in the city thanks to its hybrid system. Going by your shortlist, you want a bigger family car on a tight budget and are looking at base trims. If you need the car in the next couple of months for mostly city use with some weekend trips, pick the Kia Seltos HTE (O) IVT. It is well equipped and, compared to the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, gives you more back-seat space and boot room.The Brezza update will be relatively minor, though we expect the 1.5 NA engine to make way for the 1.0 turbo-petrol from the Fronx. Waiting for it only makes sense if you mainly drive in tight city areas and want an easier-to-park car.Overall, for a near-term purchase and everyday comfort, the Seltos lines up best with what you’re considering.
