Hi Autocar team, should I buy the current-generation BMW iX1 or wait for the next-generation model, expected to launch in 2028? The current version could be replaced within a year, and I expect the new platform and battery technology to be better. What would you advise?
The next-generation iX1 will likely bring a new platform, improved battery technology, and a more advanced interior, but it will still take a couple of years to reach India. If you are not in a hurry, waiting makes sense. But if you need a car now, the BMW iX1 LWB is still a strong buy. It is a well-rounded premium electric car with a comfortable cabin, good range and BMW's proven ownership experience.
Hello guys, I’m a 30 year old working professional and am looking to buy an EV mainly for city commute and occasional highway driving (20%). I appreciate build and ride quality, refinement and reliability. The EVs that I’m mainly looking at are the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, BYD Sealion 7 and BMW iX1. Which do you think will be the right fit for my use case? I’m actually leaning towards the Korean cars and am not willing to spend for the iX1 just for its badge value. Thank you for the answer in advance. You guys are a great source of reliable and measured Automative content in this country. Really appreciate it!
The Kia EV6 is the most driver-focused option from the list with a sportier character and sharper handling, but it comes at a premium which might not make it justify the stretch. However, Kia dealers are offering significant discounts which could bring its price at par with the others, and only then is it a compelling buy. After its recent update, the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 no longer feels value for money, but it remains a comfortable, feature-loaded and practical option, now with more range and better DC fast charging capability. Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are also strong, which matters for long-term peace of mind. The BYD Sealion 7 feels like a flagship offering, with a luxurious interior and a laundry list of features. Surprisingly, the two-wheel drive version is the most value-for-money option here, which makes it very compelling. However, it doesn't drive as well as the BMW, nor is its after-sales support as widespread as the others. The BMW iX1 is a fundamentally sorted car, and is relatively more compact for city usage. Its ride-handling balance are excellent and it also comes with the snob value of the BMW badge. As a 30-year old, the iX1 will speak of your success and achievements like no other. But it lacks several features, hence it might not seem value for money. In summary, get the Kia EV6 for the best drive experience provided you get a substantial discount that brings its price close to others. But if you're looking for the best bang for your buck, opt for the rear-wheel drive BYD Sealion 7.
Should I go for BMW IX1 LWB or BMW X1 LWB?
Go for the BMW IX1 if you're looking for zippy yet seamless performance as well as low running costs. If you can arrange for home charging, the IX1 is certainly the better option. Pick the X1 LWB only if home charging isn't an option or if you frequently do over 500km road trips and don't want to plan for charging stops along the way.
I’m looking for an entry-level luxury EV, with space, comfort, good ride quality and futuristic features as my top priorities. My budget is under Rs 65 lakh. Which one should I choose between the BMW iX1 LWB and Mercedes-Benz CLA EV, or would it be better to wait for the Mercedes-Benz GLA EV?
The BMW iX1 LWB is the best fit for your priorities of space, comfort and ride quality. The long-wheelbase version offers a genuinely spacious rear seat, which is a clear advantage over the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric. The iX1 also rides well and feels like a well-rounded premium EV, with a practical boot and a comfortable cabin that will work well for daily use and longer journeys. The CLA EV is a stylish product, with a noticeably more attractive interior and a better feature set. Performance is better, and it will also deliver a healthier range compared to the BMW iX1. But do keep in mind that it is pricier, and its backseat detracts from a luxurious experience on account of its upright backrest and low seating. So if you're going to be driving by yourself with one passenger for the most part, then the CLA EV seems to be the better option. But if backseat comfort matters to you as much as the drive, then opt for the BMW iX1.
Hi Autocar India, My name is Radhika from Hyderabad. I have tested XEV 9E, XEV 9S, BYD Sealion 7, Tesla Model Y and BMW iX1. My budget is not a constraint, and I can spend up to 55-57 lakhs on a car. BMW's driving dynamics felt better than those of Mahindra or Tata. FYI, I have tried BYD Sealion 7 also, but decided not to go with it due to their network, badge value and other reasons. My family did not like Tesla as the interiors are very minimal. My question is whether spending an additional 25 lakhs for the BMW iX1 makes sense, or if it's not a great car. Can you please clarify? Thank you!
Pick the BMW iX1 LWB. The extra spend gets you what you already liked on the drive - a tighter, more confidence‑inspiring feel than the Mahindra XEV 9e/9s, and a premium, normal‑to‑use cabin your family will prefer over Tesla’s sparse setup. You also sidestep your BYD car related worries with stronger brand pull and a wider service network. On our roads, the iX1’s steering and body control make everyday driving feel calmer and cleaner, whether in Hyderabad traffic or on the ORR. Fit and finish, seats, and infotainment feel a class up, so it will still feel special three years in, not just on day one.Be aware that rear space and boot are not as generous as the XEVs or Model Y L; the ride is on the firmer side on rough patches, and range and fast‑charge speeds are not class‑leading. If you carry tall adults in the back often or do frequent very long highway runs, you will notice those. If your deal lands close to Rs. 55‑57 lakh on road, the premium isn’t just badge tax; it’s daily satisfaction. If not, the XEV 9e/9s are a strong value, but for your priorities, the BMW is the right call.
