Hi, we are a family of three adults and one teenager. Over the past 10 years, we have owned a Honda Brio S MT, a Honda City V MT, and a Maruti Celerio AMT. The biggest advantage has been very low maintenance and minimal to no electrical or mechanical issues. We are now planning to buy a new automatic transmission car (non-AMT, as we want to avoid shift jerks). Any body type is acceptable. We plan to make the purchase in the next 6 to 12 months, with a budget of up to ₹17 lakh. Our main requirements are good city mileage, good safety, and decent performance.

Since you have been happy with the Hondas in your family, why not consider the 5th-generation Honda City, currently on sale? It features a very flexible and strong 1.5-litre engine mated to a CVT automatic transmission, which is both jerk-free and smooth. Also, it will give you the same trouble-free experience you have enjoyed with your current Hondas.
If you are looking for a change, you could consider the 1.0 AT variants of the Skoda Slavia or Volkswagen Virtus, both of which have a smooth torque converter auto transmission, which is much smoother than the AMTs you want to avoid.

I drive 12–15 km Monday to Friday, and a 140 km one-way trip on Saturdays, mostly on the expressway. My budget is up to ₹20 lakh, and I want a car with good mileage but also fun to drive. Which car should I buy?

Stick to a sedan since you are used to one, and also, sedans are more fun to drive than SUVs.

You could go for the Skoda Slavia 1.5 or Volkswagen Virtus GT, which comes with a strong 1.5 turbo-petrol mated to a quick-shifting 7-speed twin-clutch.

Both these sedans have superb ride and handling, which makes them fun to drive. At the same time, these sedans are easy to drive too.

My father bought a Honda City 1.5 in 1999, and he was fond of all types of cars. He also owned a Standard double-door and even suggested the Tatkal concept to Maruti. I am still using the Honda City that my father bought in 1999, and to this day, there is no match for that generation of the Honda City. Although I own other cars as well, I still drive this amazing Honda City to my office every day.

It is great to hear that you are still enjoying your 1999 Honda City. It was a game-changer in its time and remains a very enjoyable car to drive.

If you are looking for a new sedan, we would suggest waiting, as options like the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus are due for updates. If you want to buy something right now that is great to drive and looks good too, the Volkswagen Virtus GT with the 1.5 litre TSI engine is worth considering.

Hey Autocar! I’m planning to buy a sedan car and am confused between the 1.5L turbo options of the Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus which is the best buy in terms of drive feel, mileage, and maintenance?

The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus with their 1.5 TSI and dual-clutch automatic transmission combination are the nicest to drive in their segment. Both cars are identical in terms of their platform, build quality, space, comfort, and equipment list, the only differentiating factor being their styling.

Pick the one that appeals to you more. The 1.5 TSI engine gets a cylinder deactivation function as well as an automatic engine stop-start function to curtail fuel consumption.

The Hyundai Verna 1.5, on the other hand, is quick, smooth, and in the real world, it is likely to be a touch more fuel efficient. Also, the top-spec Verna is also cheaper than its rivals, making it worthy of serious consideration. The only downside is that its dynamics don't feel as sporty as the VW or Skoda. But if you don't plan to attack winding roads often, you will be happy with what the Verna has to deliver.

I am a senior citizen above 70 years of age and am looking to change my car. After driving sedans for more than 20 years, I am finding it difficult to choose a new one, as the market is full of SUVs. I do not like high cars, as they feel like mini trucks to me. My monthly city driving is between 500 and 1,000km, with no highway usage. My budget is ₹16 to 18 lakh. Please advise.

If you are not keen on an SUV and want to buy a sedan, we would suggest waiting. All four sedans currently on sale, the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia, are due for updates soon.
If you cannot wait and considering you already own a 2012 Verna, the current Verna is a sensible choice. It is a well rounded product with a smooth petrol engine, good space, a comfortable ride and premium interiors. The Hyundai Verna also offers strong value for money, and within your budget, you can get the top SX(O) petrol CVT, which comes loaded with premium features.
If you want a sedan that is slightly taller and easier to get in and out of, the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia make sense. Their higher ground clearance makes them more practical for Indian road conditions, and the higher seating position improves ease of access.
However, if you are open to the idea of an SUV and want a safe, proven option, you can consider the Hyundai Creta. It is a strong all rounder with a smooth and refined 1.5 litre petrol engine, comfortable ride quality and a spacious, practical cabin.

I want to buy a car with a budget of Rs 16 to 17 lakh. My yearly running is around 6,000 to 7,000 km, but I am a driving enthusiast and enjoy driving. Please suggest a suitable car.

Since you are an auto enthusiast and love to drive, we would recommend you look at a sedan car like the Skoda Slavia or the Volkswagen Virtus. They are both essentially the same car, built on the same platform or near identical in terms of drive feel.
For your budget of 16-17 lakh, you will get the smaller 1.0 litre TSi engine, and you will notice turbo lag; however, past that, the performance is lively enough, and the engine is quite rev-happy.
If you can stretch your budget a bit, opt for the larger 1.5-litre TSI engine. It delivers a very sprightly drive. Beyond the engine, both cars have a superb ride and handling balance.

I currently drive a 2022 Tata Nexon XZ+ (HS) petrol manual and want to upgrade to a manual car that feels like an enthusiast’s car with great throttle response and engaging driving dynamics, since I find the Nexon’s response laggy. My budget is around ₹20 lakh. I have shortlisted the VW Virtus GT 1.5 and the Skoda Kushaq. Are there any other manual cars I should consider?

Since you want to upgrade from your Tata Nexon to a fun-to-drive manual car, you should consider the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI MT. The Taigun is one of the best handling midsize SUVs, and its 150hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol is one of the punchiest around.

You could also consider the Skoda Kushaq or the Skoda Slavia/Volkswagen Virtus, but none of those get a manual gearbox option with the 1.5 TSI engine - only a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Hello team, I read your blogs regularly and value your reviews. Please guide me on which car I should buy from my shortlisted options. This will be my first car, and I enjoy driving. My requirements are a minimalist design (not too many gadgets), a manual transmission, good comfort and space, and a roomy boot. I’ve shortlisted the Volkswagen Virtus, Honda Amaze, and Hyundai Basalt. My budget is ₹12–14 lakh. Please advise.

Thank you for your support. We're happy to help!

Coming to your question, the Honda Amaze, while practical and comfy, does not have the driving thrill you would want.

The Volkswagen Virtus, while impressive, will not fit in your budget apart from the base variant, which isn't too impressive. The Citroen Basalt X will be a good pick out of this lot. It has a punchy turbo-petrol engine that is lovely to drive, the ride comfort is excellent, and it has a large boot as well.

Also, while it is feature-packed, it isn't unnecessarily complicated, and the functions are easy to use. The Basalt X would be our recommendation.

I’m really confused about choosing between the Virtus GT-Line (Carbon Steel Grey matte) and a mid-size SUV like the Creta.

Your usage should determine which car suits you best. The Volkswagen Virtus, being a sedan, is one for keen drivers as it's got punchy turbo petrol engines and a sorted ride and handling balance.

A midsize SUV like the Hyundai Creta, on the other hand, will be better for the family-oriented as it has a more spacious and practical cabin.

I am looking to buy a petrol automatic, preferably a sedan. My on-road budget is ₹20 lakh. What are my options?

Given your requirement and budget, you currently have four options. The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus are mechanically identical, and they stand out for their punchy turbo petrol engine options and ride and handling balance.

The Honda City has a refined 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and has the best back seat. The Hyundai Verna, meanwhile, has the most features, and it can be had with either a turbo-petrol or a naturally-aspirated petrol engine.

The Slavia, Virtus and Verna have also received a full, 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP.
