After confirming development on a GTI version of the ID Polo, Volkswagen is considering a more powerful ‘Clubsport’ version of the hatchback, reports Autocar UK. Insiders have suggested that the power output would increase from 226hp on the GTI to 286hp on the Clubsport and it could get a mechanical limited-slip differential.

  1. Clubsport version of the ID Polo GTI could have 286hp.
  2. It could also come with a mechanical limited-slip differential.

Volkswagen ID Polo GTI Clubsport: What to expect?

On being asked about the ID Polo GTI Clubsport, Florian Umbach, driving dynamics head of Volkswagen, said to Autocar UK , “We’re working on something. There is certainly more peak power that we can find from the motor and battery hardware that we have, and more torque that the front axle could handle.” He also added that it could feature simulated gearshifts and Volkswagen is working on a “similar kind of paddleshift power delivery that the electric Hyundai N cars have”. Umbach said, “This is simply a software thing. It’s all about motor control and an audio soundtrack to match.”

The ID Polo’s digital instrument cluster can imitate the Mk1 Golf GTI’s analogue dials, and likely, the simulated gearshifts of the Clubsport could likewise mimic the GTI’s power delivery. However, Umbach stated, “These are the kind of things that the executive board will only let us explore if the GTI is a commercial success, of course. If people respond to this car as it is, we can really take it to the next level.” Like with previous Clubsport models, the ID Polo GTI could get a more concentrated chassis setup, riding lower than the standard ID Polo GTI and styling upgrades.
