The Toyota GR GT is Toyota Gazoo Racing’s (GR) new flagship, developed from scratch as a two-seat, road-legal race car. Power comes from a new twin-turbo hybrid V8 engine driving the rear wheels, with the focus on performance, handling and driver involvement.

  1. Rear-wheel drive, twin-turbo hybrid V8 targeted at 650hp, 850 Nm
  2. Aero-focused design with aluminium structure and carbon panels
  3. Double-wishbone suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes for sharper handling

Toyota says it has brought key engineers from the Lexus LFA project back to mentor the GR GT development team and help retain what it calls the “secret sauce” of its earlier halo car.

The GR GT, previously seen in camouflage testing, is still in development, with sales expected to start in 2027. When it arrives, it will take on rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG GT, Porsche 911 and Aston Martin Vantage, bringing Toyota back into a segment it hasn’t competed in for many years.

Toyota GR GT exterior

Low-slung, aerodynamic shape with sharp proportions

The GR GT’s shape has been designed around airflow, performance and cooling. Large vents move air across the brakes and through the engine bay before exiting near the windscreen and rear. It uses Toyota’s first all-aluminium body frame, with carbon-fibre-reinforced panels on the bonnet, roof, doors and boot lid, plus carbon-ceramic brake discs from Brembo.

Its proportions are classic front-engine supercar: a long bonnet, cab-rear layout and a very low roofline. It measures 4,820mm long and just 1,195mm tall. The engine is mounted low and pushed back towards the cabin for better balance, helping target a kerb weight below 1,750kg and a 45:55 weight split between front and rear.

Toyota finalised the exterior only after the aerodynamic requirements were set, ensuring each element serves a clear purpose. Stability control, adapted from Toyota’s Le Mans racing programme, is designed to give confidence on both circuits and public roads.

Simple, driver-focused cabin

Inside, the GR GT features a tight two-seat cabin with good visibility and easy-to-reach controls. The dashboard is low with physical buttons in the centre console to keep operations simple while driving quickly.

The seats appear to be carbon-framed bucket units, shaped to hold occupants firmly in fast corners while still being suitable for everyday use. The steering wheel houses controls for drive modes and stability settings, while the digital display behind it provides essential information clearly.

The cabin follows the same function-first approach as the exterior. It offers modern tech, including a central touchscreen and large gearshift paddles, but avoids unnecessary luxury elements. There is no Toyota badge inside, reinforcing GR’s identity as its own performance brand.

New 650hp, 850Nm hybrid V8 powering the rear wheels

The GR GT uses a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 paired with a mild-hybrid system and an e-motor. The target output is around 650hp and 850Nm, sent to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox with a wet clutch, instead of a torque converter, and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Toyota expects a top speed above 320kph, though the numbers are still not final.

The V8 is mounted low and behind the front axle for handling benefits. A lightweight aluminium structure and carbon-fibre-reinforced panels help keep weight under 1,750kg. Toyota has designed the engine to meet future emissions rules so it can remain in production for years.

Double-wishbone suspension, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres aim to deliver strong braking and cornering capability. The hybrid motor also helps smooth torque during gearshifts, and the exhaust has been tuned to ensure the V8 has a distinctive performance sound.
