Hyundai presented its new Concept Three model, which previews an electric hatchback set to enter production in 2026, at the ongoing IAA Mobility (or Munich motor show) in Germany. The Hyundai Concept Three will most likely spawn the Ioniq 3 EV, but officials have told Autocar UK that the Ioniq 2 and Ioniq 4 names also remain a possibility. The current global Ioniq line-up comprises the 5, 5 N Line, 5 N and 9 SUVs, as well as the 6 sedan.

The new Hyundai concept shows what the brand’s new electric hatchback will look like. The design follows Hyundai’s new “Art of Steel” language, with smooth, simple surfaces and curved panels. It also carries Hyundai’s signature pixel details on the headlight and tail-lights, as well as on the front bumper. The visor-style windscreen and wraparound glass give it a futuristic look. Features like the coach doors, oversized wheels, lemon-tinted windows and massive rear diffuser are unlikely to make it to production, but the overall proportions, shape and surfacing are true to the production car. It has a length of 4,287mm, which, for reference, is 1mm less than the Volkswagen Golf.

As for the interior, Hyundai said the EV’s design aims to keep drivers’ eyes on the road. Physical buttons remain for key functions like climate control. “We never went all in on touchscreens and kept buttons,” Hyundai Design Centre boss Simon Loasby told Autocar UK. The dashboard adheres to a simplistic design, with no central touchscreen but two tiny displays placed high up behind the octagonal steering wheel. Ambient lights are present on the dashboard and door trims, and a long centre console acts as a partition between the front seats. Since it’s built as a pure EV, it gets a completely flat floor with no transmission hump in the back.

Hyundai Concept Three expected range and battery specs

Could offer 58.3kWh, 81.4kWh battery options

Exact details are still under wraps, but the Concept Three’s production version could be based on the 400V E-GMP electric architecture and use the same 58.3kWh and 81.4kWh battery options as the Kia EV3. On the WLTP cycle, the Kia sibling delivers an up to 600km range. A sporty N version was not confirmed, but Hyundai hasn’t ruled it out either.
