Nearly three years since it launched its first product in India – the Hector – MG India has crossed the one lakh sales milestone mark. The Hector and Hector Plus also happen to be the automaker’s bestselling product in India, selling over 80,000 units since launch.

    • Production began in May 2019
    • Currently has an annual production capacity of 80,000 vehicles
    • New EV hatchback in the works

The automaker introduced its first product, the Hector in June 2019, aimed at the midsize SUV segment. During the last three years, MG India has expanded its SUV portfolio even further by launching the Hector Plus, ZS EV, Gloster, and the Astor.

MG India understands that tech sells well, and it has cleverly focused on introducing 'connected car' tech. With the Astor, MG India introduced Car-as-a-Platform (CaaP) service that allows usage of streaming applications, voice as well as concierge support services through the in-car infotainment system and mobile phone applications. MG India's sale milestone is commendable, considering the pandemic that followed soon after and with only premium SUVs on offer with no hatchbacks. However, an interesting observation would be the fact Kia arrived in India around the same time as MG, but quickly crossed the 3 lakh sales mark in 2021, thanks to the Seltos and Sonet.

Commenting on the milestone, Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director, MG Motor India, said, “We are grateful for the love and trust that we have received after establishing a solid foundation focused on employees, dealers, suppliers and customers.”

    MG’s journey in India

In March, MG India had topped the JD Power 2021 customer sales satisfaction study as well as the Customer Service Index. Earlier this year, MG India launched the ZS EV facelift and is also working on a new affordable EV that’s slated for an early 2023 launch.

Meanwhile, MG India has also partnered with  Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to expand its EV infrastructure in the country. The brand has an annual production capacity of 80,000 vehicles and is looking to ramp up production this year.
