Carmakers in India continue to face production challenges due to semiconductor shortage. Just last month, Maruti Suzuki had to cut down on production by as much as 60 percent. Now, in a stock exchange filing, Maruti Suzuki has announced that the company is expecting an adverse impact on vehicle production in October as well.

  • October production expected to be down by 40 percent
  • Domestic sales have taken a considerable hit
  • The carmaker will launch new-gen Celerio in November

Maruti Suzuki production to be impacted in October

Production will be impacted at both of Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing facilities, the one in Haryana and its contract manufacturing company, Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private (SMG) in Gujarat. Though the situation is quite dynamic, it is currently estimated that the total vehicle production volume across both locations could be around 60 percent of normal production.

As carmakers grapple with the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, domestic passenger vehicle sales have also taken a considerable hit. Maruti Suzuki’s August sales were down by nearly nine percent to 1,03,187 vehicles on a year-on-year basis after taking measures to limit the adverse impact of the semiconductor shortage on its production. In fact, the company has been cutting down on production for several months in a row now.

Maruti Suzuki: upcoming launches in India

Maruti Suzuki’s biggest upcoming launch is the all-new Celerio hatchback. The 2021 Celerio is slated for a debut in November. The carmaker is also readying the Baleno facelift, which was spied testing and is expected to launch in 2022. Apart from these two, Maruti Suzuki is also planning updates for the Ertiga, XL6 and Vitara Brezza.
