Road safety organisation Global NCAP has revealed that the Maruti Ciaz on sale in India was put through its gamut of crash tests. Maruti’s midsize sedan received a 1-star rating for adult occupant protection (AOP) and a 3-star rating for child occupant protection.

  1. Maruti Ciaz received 20.86/34 points in adult occupant protection
  2. Ciaz’s child occupant protection score was 28.57/49 points
  3. 2 airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, ESC and seat belt reminders are standard

Maruti Ciaz adult occupant protection test results

Ciaz offers good protection for the driver’s head but poor protection for the driver’s feet.

The Ciaz’s 1-star AOP rating comes from the 20.86 out of 34 points that it scored. In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the Japanese midsize sedan was awarded 7.362/16 points, offering good protection for the driver’s head, marginal protection for the driver’s chest and thighs, and poor protection for the driver’s feet. Protection for the front passenger was rated between good and adequate. In the side movable deformable barrier test, it scored 12.494/16 points, with weak protection for the driver’s chest area.

Maruti Ciaz Global NCAP adult occupant protection

GNCAP did not put the Ciaz through the side pole impact test due to the lack of curtain airbags. Further, the footwell area and bodyshell were rated as unstable, with the latter not capable of withstanding further loadings.

Maruti Ciaz child occupant protection test results

Dynamic score: 24/24; child restraint system (CRS) installation score: 4.57/12; vehicle assessment score: 0/13 points.

Maruti Ciaz Global NCAP frontal crash test

The Ciaz received 28.57/49 points in child occupant protection, managing to get an impressive dynamic score of 24/24, offering full protection to the 18-month-old child dummy and the 3-year-old child dummy in the frontal and side impact tests. However, the sedan managed just 4.57/12 in child restraint installation and 0/13 in vehicle assessment, as it does not come with 3-point belts for all seats, the child restraint system failed for the rear centre seat, and there is no option to disconnect the front passenger airbag in case a rearward-facing CRS is used.

Maruti Ciaz safety rating vs rivals

Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus have a 5-star Global NCAP rating.

The Maruti Ciaz is on its way out of the Indian market, with no update or replacement planned for the near future. Currently priced between Rs 9.09 lakh and 11.89 lakh (ex-showroom), the Ciaz is seen as an ageing but spacious and affordable competitor to the likes of the Honda City, Skoda Slavia, Hyundai Verna and Volkswagen Virtus. Speaking of its rivals, the Verna, Slavia and Virtus have been crash tested by Global NCAP, achieving a 5-star rating for adult and child occupant protection.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio receives 3-star Global NCAP safety rating

Celerio scores 18.04/34 for adult protection and 18.57/49 for child protection.
