Mahindra Thar Signature edition will come with unique Aqua Marine paint shade.

The next-gen Mahindra Thar has been spotted testing and plans are afoot to give the current model a fitting send off. The carmaker will soon introduce the Thar Signature Edition to mark the end of production of the first-gen Thar that's been on sale since 2010, something we had reported earlier.

The Mahindra Thar Signature Edition will be sold with the 2.5-litre CRDe engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra will build only 700 units of the Thar Signature edition in two exclusive paint shades – Napoli Black and Aqua Marine (similar to the one seen on the Marazzo).  Exclusive to this version of the SUV will be its five-spoke, 15-inch alloy wheels. However, these wheels have been seen on other Mahindras including the previous-gen Scorpio and also the Marksman. Additionally, as part of the special package, the Thar Signature Edition will get black decals on the bonnet lid and silver finish on the front bumper. It will also come with a special ‘Signature Edition’ badge on its fenders bearing the signature of Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group.

On the inside, the Thar Signature Edition will be wider, more spacious, and get front-facing rear seats. It will also get unique leatherette seat covers.

Like the other Thars produced since April 1, 2019, the Signature Edition will feature ABS. However, the current Thar will not comply with India’s latest crash safety norms and will not be eligible for sale post-October 1, 2019. Also, Mahindra has discontinued the base Thar DI variant, leaving the 2.5-litre CRDe diesel engine as the only engine of choice.

While the dedicated off-roader will get a 140hp or 120hp diesel engine initially, Mahindra is looking at expanding the Thar's portfolio by adding a petrol engine at a later stage. Expect the new Mahindra Thar to be more refined and silent on the inside, better insulated from vibrations and heat, and better at blocking out road noise too.

Work has started on the second-gen Mahindra Thar and it is expected to make its debut at Auto Expo 2020. The next-gen Thar will see stiff competition from the all-new Force Gurkha which is also likely to be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo.
