Hyundai new MPV and SUV launches for India

At its Investors Day presentation today, Hyundai announced that it will launch seven all-new nameplates among the 26 new products that it has lined up for India till 2030. The brand particularly highlighted two new models, an MPV and an SUV with off-road capabilities, both of which will mark Hyundai’s entry into completely new segments in our country. While details on these models are currently very scarce, here’s what we expect them to be.

New Hyundai MPV: What to expect?

Could be the Stargazer that’s sold in Indonesia

Hyundai describes its upcoming MPV as a ‘family mover’, enabling ‘mobility for all’, suggesting that it could be positioned in the sub-Rs 20 lakh space for wide accessibility, perhaps as a potential rival to the likes of the Maruti Ertiga and Kia Carens. Hyundai hasn’t explored the MPV segment in India yet, but its global line-up has two models that fit the description of a ‘family mover’ – the Stargazer and Staria MPVs, the latter of which has even been showcased at the Auto Expo

Of these, it’s the Stargazer that better fits India, as it was developed for similar emerging markets like Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. It is about 4.4 metres long, packs a 1.5-litre petrol engine and is available in 6- and 7-seat configurations. These specifications also put it squarely against most other midsize MPVs in India.

The Stargazer is a strong candidate for India to be positioned in the midsize MPV space.

On the other hand, the Staria is a much larger and more premium MPV, offering seating for up to 11 passengers. Alternatively, Hyundai could also look at its own version of the Kia Carens Clavis MPV. With this, Hyundai will already have a ready platform but could use a completely different top hat, much like both brands do with the Creta and Seltos.

New Hyundai SUV: What to expect?

Expected to be a monocoque SUV with AWD

Hyundai says its upcoming SUV will be ‘muscular’ with ‘off-road capabilities’, but even in its global line-up, there are currently no ladder-frame SUVs with a proper 4x4 drivetrain. So, a hardcore Thar Roxx or even a Fortuner rival is very unlikely. Therefore, it could be a new monocoque SUV with an all-wheel-drive system.

One possibility is that Hyundai could look at the long-wheelbase version of the Tucson AWD that’s sold in China, perhaps with a completely different top hat for India. Conversely, if it is positioned at a more premium end of the market, it could be the Santa Fe AWD, sold in markets like North America and Europe.

Hyundai has not shared a specific timeline for either of these models, though the first of these is expected to arrive as early as FY2027-FY2028 and the other by FY2030.
