First 2020 Mahindra Thar to be auctioned for charity

The first unit of the new Mahindra Thar is set to be auctioned online for charity. While registrations for the auction opened yesterday on Mahindra’s website, the auction itself will take place from September 24-27, 2020. Mahindra announced that the auction is meant to raise funds in the fight against COVID-19 and that the brand will donate a matching amount to the charity of the customer’s choice.

    • First 2020 Thar to be sold will get unique elements
    • Winning bidder can choose from all five versions and six colour options
    • New Thar launch on October 2, 2020

What will make the 2020 Thar to be auctioned unique?

On the outside, the model that will be up for auction will get a ‘Thar #1’ badge and customised badging with the owner’s initials. The seat covers and a decorative plaque on the dashboard will also come with a serial number ‘1’.

Other than these cosmetic changes, the model will be identical mechanically and equipment-wise to the standard version. The winning bidder will be able to choose from any of the four engine-gearbox options, two trim levels – AX and LX – and all six exterior colour options.

For details on which features and powertrain options are available with each variant, check out our 2020 Mahindra Thar AX and LX variants explained report.

Which charitable organisations can the winning bidder choose?

The proceeds from the auction and Mahindra’s matching amount can be donated to one of three organisations – the Naandi Foundation, the Swades Foundation and the PM Cares Fund.

Is there anything else to know about the first 2020 Thar and the auction?

While the online auction will be conducted by Mahindra First Choice Wheels (MFCW), the bidding will be conducted by Ernst & Young. Prospective bidders will be required to put down a refundable deposit when they register.

Bookings for the second-generation off-roader will open on October 2, which is when 2020 Thar prices will also be revealed.
