Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 expert review

The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 follows a classic cafe racer design with low clip-on handlebars, a sporty stance and timeless styling. New paint schemes add freshness to the overall look, and it remains a motorcycle that encourages you to ride simply for the enjoyment of being on the road. One thing to note is that the chrome clutch and crankcase covers can show signs of pitting and lose their shine sooner than expected.

The Continental GT 650 has a committed riding position, but it is not as extreme as it appears. The low handlebars place more weight on the wrists, and frequent braking, acceleration and rough roads can become tiring over longer rides. The seat is firmer than the Interceptor’s, and some riders may find that their knees touch the lower edge of the fuel tank. While it is not the most comfortable motorcycle for long-distance touring, the ergonomics suit its cafe racer character well.

The GT 65 is powered by a 648cc parallel-twin engine that produces 47hp. The engine delivers smooth performance, strong acceleration and enough power for both city riding and highway use. While the BS6 version feels slightly softer than the earlier model, it remains enjoyable and rewards riders who explore the higher rev range. The Continental GT 650 also benefits from CEAT Zoom Cruz tyres, which provide better grip and confidence than the earlier tyres. The motorcycle feels composed, communicative and predictable when ridden enthusiastically.

The Continental GT 650 feels agile and engaging. The suspension has a firm setup but absorbs larger bumps and potholes without crashing through them. Generous ground clearance also makes it more usable on Indian roads than its sporty appearance might suggest. The motorcycle enjoys being ridden through corners and feels stable when pushed. However, the suspension can sometimes limit its natural agility, and sharper brakes would better match its sporty nature. Even so, braking performance remains confidence inspiring.

The Continental GT 650 comes with dual-channel ABS and strong braking performance. Improved CEAT tyres also add to rider confidence by offering better grip and feedback.
8
The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is a charming cafe racer with a smooth twin-cylinder engine, engaging handling and plenty of visual appeal. It asks for some compromise in comfort, but that comes with the territory of its sporty design. For riders looking for a motorcycle that prioritises style, character and an involving riding experience, the Continental GT 650 remains an easy machine to enjoy.
