BSA Gold Star 650 Expert Review

The BSA Gold Star 650 stays true to its heritage with a timeless design that combines classic styling with modern touches. Chrome detailing, vintage BSA badges and simple bodywork give it strong retro appeal, while details like the pinstriped fuel tank and embroidered seat add to its character. Although the overall fit and finish are a noticeable improvement over previous Classic Legends motorcycles, some areas still need attention. Our test bike showed minor quality issues such as loose side panels and early signs of rust, while the fuel filler cap could have been designed better for easier use.

The Gold Star offers a relaxed and upright riding position that suits long hours in the saddle. The soft seat is comfortable, especially over longer rides, and the riding posture feels natural. Despite its weight, the motorcycle remains well-balanced at low speeds, although shorter riders may find it easier to manage than taller ones due to the relatively low seat height. Heat management is also good, with only mild warmth felt in slow-moving traffic.

The 652cc single-cylinder engine is the highlight of the motorcycle. It delivers strong low-end and mid-range torque, making acceleration feel effortless. The engine is smooth and enjoyable once on the move, while the light clutch and smooth gearbox make riding easy. However, the throttle can feel slightly abrupt at lower speeds, and our test bike experienced occasional stalling in traffic. The deep exhaust note adds to the riding experience, although it lacks the character of a twin-cylinder engine.

For a large retro motorcycle, the Gold Star handles surprisingly well. It feels agile through corners and remains stable thanks to its grippy tyres and capable chassis. The Brembo brakes offer excellent stopping power with good feedback, making braking one of the bike's strongest areas. However, the rear suspension feels underdamped and struggles over rough roads, making the ride less comfortable on broken surfaces.

The Gold Star keeps things simple with an analogue instrument cluster supported by small LCD displays. It also includes USB charging ports for added convenience. While the instrument console suits the motorcycle's retro character, the small display is difficult to read, and the absence of a gear position indicator is noticeable.

The BSA Gold Star 650 delivers an authentic big single-cylinder riding experience with classic styling, a torque-rich engine and excellent braking performance. While there are some quality concerns and the rear suspension could be better, it succeeds in offering a charming, easy-going motorcycle that grows on you the more you ride it.
