I am 47 years old. My first motorcycle was a Suzuki Samurai, and I currently ride a Honda Shine (2013 model). I am now looking to replace my bike, but I am not sure whether I should go for the latest version of the Honda Shine or consider a different motorcycle altogether. I commute around 40 km to the office, three days a week, and typically ride another 20-30 km on weekends. I also have two daughters, and they are taller than their age would suggest. Would an EV be a better option for my usage? I live in a rented house, so I am not sure how convenient charging would be. I am also considering options such as the Honda Unicorn and a Royal Enfield Bullet. I have a lean build and weigh around 64 kg. Considering my requirements, which motorcycle would you recommend?

Since you have had a long and drama-free stint with your Shine, the logical next step to make would be the Honda Unicorn. For your use case, which is mostly inside the city with short weekend leisure rides, the Unicorn makes for a good fit. It will offer a noticeable step up in performance and comfort compared to the Shine with only a small drop-off in fuel economy. The Royal Enfield Bullet 350 is lovely if you want a relaxed bike with new-age reliability and old-school feel, but since you have mentioned you are on the slimmer side of the spectrum, its weight could be a problem at slower speeds and its fuel economy will also be noticeably lower. If your landlord and the building you reside in, don't have a problem with you installing a charging solution at home, you can consider electric scooters like TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, Ather Rizta and Vida VX2. If not, stick with a petrol-powered bike for now.To decide between the Unicorn and Bullet, we'd recommend a test ride of both since they are very different machines.

I want to upgrade from my 2013 Honda Shine and am looking for a peppy-performing motorcycle for city use only. Please suggest options in the 125cc and 150-160cc segments.

In the 125cc category, you have a long list of options with varying body types and feature sets. In the traditional commuter class, you could consider the Honda Shine and the Hero Super Splendor Xtec / Glamour models. If you want a sporty-looking, feature-rich commuter, you can consider the Honda CB125 Hornet, TVS Raider, and Hero Xtreme 125R.In the 160cc category, bikes like the Bajaj Pulsar N160 and TVS Apache RTR 160 4V would be our recommendations on the sportier end of the scale. If you want a simple, straightforward commuter, the Honda Unicorn and any of the Yamaha FZ models will serve you well.Take a thorough test ride of the bikes you shortlist before you decide.

Hi Autocar India, I have a budget of 1 lakh 50 thousand for a new bike, and a 125cc motorcycle suits my requirements. I’ve shortlisted the Bajaj Pulsar 125 and the Honda SP 125, but I’m confused between the two. Which one would you recommend?

Both the Bajaj Pulsar 125 and Honda SP125 are great commuter bikes, and it's hard to go wrong with either. The latest Pulsar 125 is a refined, feature-loaded (the top variants, especially so) and decently comfortable machine which should be fuel efficient and reliable in the long run as well. The SP125 has largely remained the same since its BS6 update, gaining only a few features and new colours - it is largely a Shine 125 in different clothes, which means it should be a straightforward and dependable workhorse of a commuter. As we said at the outset, it's hard to go wrong with either, so make sure you get a test ride and see which one you like more before you make your decision. It would also be wise to choose an option that has a sales & service touchpoint near your office or residence.

I am a new learner and am planning to buy a two-wheeler in Pune. With so many options available, I am quite confused. I want something that is not too heavy and is smooth to ride, as I will be commuting 30-40 km every day. I also want a reliable engine that does not require frequent maintenance or servicing, as I plan to keep the vehicle for as long as possible. I am 5ft 7in, so it should also be suitable for my height. I would prefer an ethanol-compatible petrol two-wheeler that will not give me trouble. Which bike or scooter would be suitable for me?

You haven't specified whether or not you want a geared motorcycle or a CVT scooter, so we'll suggest reputable options from both brackets. If you are looking to get your first bike as a tool to learn how to operate the clutch and gears, then you should consider the Honda Shine 125 / SP125 / CB125 Hornet, TVS Raider, Hero Super Splendor / Xtreme 125R. These are all well-priced, smooth, fuel-efficient and comfortable machines which should last you a long time and keep you comfortable over your 40km commute. If a scooter is what you prefer, then pick from reputed options like the Honda Activa 110 / 125, TVS Jupiter 110 / 125, Suzuki Access and Yamaha Fascino / RayZR.You should choose based on two things: first, which bike/scooter you gel with most on your test ride and whichever one has a service centre not too far from your residence / office for hassle-free ownership in the long run.

Hi, I am 78kg, 5ft 10in tall, and live in a Tier 3 town. My average daily commute is around 12-13km, mostly on broken roads within the town, with a pillion rider for about 6km of the journey. I currently use a BS3 Hero scooter, which I purchased in 2016. With the current fuel prices, my fuel expense is around Rs 400 per week. Given my usage and riding conditions, should I consider switching to an electric scooter?

Since your commute - though short - is mostly on broken roads, we'd recommend shifting to a motorcycle for better ride comfort. Look at options like the Honda Shine 125, Hero Super Splendor Xtec and TVS Raider, which will offer a good step up from a smaller scooter both in terms of performance and comfort. We wouldn't advise you to shift to an electric vehicle because your daily run is quite low and to recoup the additional money you'll shell out over an ICE vehicle you will take many years.
