The Toyota Vellfire is the Japanese brand’s flagship MPV in India. It’s based on Toyota’s modular TNGA-K platform, which also underpins the more luxurious Lexus LM. In India, the Toyota Vellfire is priced between Rs 1.20 crore and Rs 1.30 crore (ex-showroom). The only combustion-engine rival of the Vellfire in India is the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, with the likes of the upcoming Denza D9 likely to be its all-electric alternative. Customers wanting more luxury can look at the Vellfire’s Lexus LM cousin.

In terms of power, the Toyota Vellfire’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol-hybrid setup offers 193hp and 240Nm of torque. This is routed through a CVT (continuously variable transmission) to the front wheels (FWD). The Vellfire isn’t for the performance-minded individual, but fits the bill for those who care more about comfort and efficiency. On the latter front, the Toyota Vellfire has a claimed mileage of 19.28kpl.

As for its design, the front fascia of the Vellfire has a large and intimidating-looking grille finished in chrome. The droopy side intakes are also chrome garnished, while the sleek elements at the front include the LED headlamps with LED DRLs and sequential turn indicators. The slab-faced side profile features chrome garnish along the windowline and on the door handles, 19-inch alloy wheels and fixed side steps. The upright rear gets a roof spoiler, wrap-around LED tail lights, and a droop-down rear design with more shiny trim.

The spacious interior of the Toyota Vellfire usually accommodates six occupants, with individual captain seats for the second row providing extended legrests and individual armrests. These sliding seats also come with detachable screens positioned on their central armrests. Meanwhile, the third-row seats are spacious enough for adults as well, especially over short journeys. Access to the rear luggage space is via the powered tailgate, while the rear seats can be tucked away for even more room.

Exterior Design And Engineering

You don’t buy an MPV for its looks, but this Vellfire does feel come across as more of a luxury vehicle and less of a high end airport shuttle as the last one did. It’s massive — 5m long, 2m tall — and hard to miss even in a sea of luxury sedans and SUVs. There’s plenty of bling with chrome on the massive six-slat grille and bumpers and a dual-tone look to the 19-inch rims.

Interior Space And Comfort

The real story is inside. The middle row — accessed via powered sliding doors — is the star. Think thrones, not seats: massive, plush, multi-way adjustable, with heating, cooling, massage and legrests. It really is business class on the road.

Even the third row is impressive, with space for three adults and reclining backrests. The luagge area is very flexible, though there’s no provision for a spare tyre.

Cabin quality has taken a leap, with better materials, leather, wood-effect trim, and more padding all around. Storage is generous, but the glovebox is oddly small.

Performance And Refinement

The Vellfire is front-wheel-drive only in India and uses a 250hp hybrid setup. It’s great for easy driving but is not a performance machine by any stretch. The eCVT whines under hard acceleration, though it’s whisper-quiet in EV mode.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

Toyota claims a 19.28kpl mileage figure for the Vellfire. It’s a remarkable figure for a vehicle so large. The Vellfire’s strong hybrid tech that enables EV mode running for long stints is to credit here.

Ride Comfort And Handling

Ride quality is good but not Rs 1.5 crore-good. Bumps do creep in and there’s road noise too. Drivers will need to get used to the Vellfire's size. U-turns and tight parkings require careful maneuvering though the big Toyota is easy to pilot at higher speeds.

Features And Safety

The Vellfire for India comes generously equipped. The 14-inch touchscreen isn’t cutting-edge, but it's slick and packs wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Physical AC controls are a plus too. Safety includes six airbags, ADAS with lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring.

Middle row perks? Flip-out tray tables, vanity mirrors, powered sunblinds, dual sunroofs and a roof-mounted entertainment screen controlled via touchscreen armrest remotes. Even the third row gets powered sunshades and AC vents.

Value For Money

Starting at Rs1.22 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Vellfire isn’t your average Toyota. But nothing this side of Rs 2 crore can touch it for sheer rear seat comfort. If being chauffeured in utmost comfort is the goal, this is money well spent.

Of course, if you want even more exclusivity, there’s the LM — the Vellfire’s cousin from Lexus, yours for up to Rs 2.6 crore.

Your daily drive of 180km is a lot of time to spend on the road. You need a car that is efficient yet comfortable. The MG M9, being an EV, would be the cheapest to run, but it's not as comfortable as the other three. The seats and ride quality of this MG car are not as good as the Kia Carnival, which appears to be the most practical option for you, as you get the benefit of diesel efficiency and cost, quality interiors, cosseting seats and good ride comfort.The Toyota Velfire is by far the best of the lot: the cabin feels a notch above the others, the hybrid powertrain delivers ultra-smooth, efficient performance, and reliability is bulletproof. We agree it is overpriced, and it's your call how much you want to spend for that extra bit of comfort.

It really depends on why you want to sell the Toyota Vellfire, because moving to the MG M9 would not seem like a big upgrade. The Vellfire is very comfy and well-equipped, as is the M9; thus, buying the MG car would feel more like a lateral move than a step up in this regard. Moreover, a mileage of 65000 km on your car isn't a lot at all, especially for a Toyota car. Thus, you could keep the Vellfire, assuming there are no other issues with it. Where the M9 MPV would be feel better is with the electric powertrain, which would give you lower running costs and a refined and silent drive.

If budget is not a limitation, then the best 5-6 seater will have to be a three-row luxury MPV, as luxury sedans are fundamentally designed for four people, and three-row luxury SUVs have compromised third row comfort.For 5-6 people, the Toyota Velfire is the most comfortable, as even the third row has good space all around and comfy seats that are almost on par with the second row. You get lots of features and storage space, which makes it like a lounge on wheels. But at Rs. 1.58 to 1.7 crore (on-road Mumbai), it is very expensive.
