The Toyota Fortuner is a full-size, seven-seat SUV built on a ladder-frame chassis. The Toyota Fortuner rivals the MG Majestor, Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron. It is sold in 11 variants across the standard Fortuner (4X2), Leader Edition, 4X4, Legender and GR-S. You can have it with a 2.7-litre petrol automatic, or a 2.8-litre diesel with a 6-speed manual or automatic. The Neo Drive versions add a 48V mild-hybrid system to the diesel.

As per us at Autocar India, the Fortuner feels almost indestructible. It is tough, quick for its size and a capable off-roader. It also has a strong reputation for reliability and resale value. However, its cabin feels outdated for the price.

Fortuner Key Features

Here is how the Fortuner variants compare, from the standard model to the Legender and GR-S.

Category

Key Features

Engine and gearbox

  • The 2.8-litre diesel makes 204hp, with 500Nm on the automatic and 420Nm on the manual. It is offered in 4x2 and 4x4
  • The 2.7-litre petrol makes 166hp and 245Nm, and comes as a 4x2 automatic

Screens and audio

  • An 8-inch touchscreen and an 11-speaker JBL sound system
  • Connected car tech, with a wireless charger on the Legender and Neo Drive versions
  • There is no digital driver's display, as the instrument cluster is part digital

Safety

  • Seven airbags, including a driver knee airbag, along with stability control, traction control and hill start assist
  • ISOFIX mounts on the second row
  • The Neo Drive versions add a 360-degree camera, though its image quality is underwhelming. There is no ADAS on any variant

Comfort and convenience

  • Dual-zone climate control, Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes, and a powered tailgate on select variants
  • Ventilated front seats on most variants, though these are not available on the Neo Drive
  • The Leader Edition adds a black and maroon cabin, ambient lighting and auto-folding mirrors

Off-road ability

  • The 4x4 versions get a low-range transfer case, an electronic diff lock and hill descent control
  • The Neo Drive versions add Multi-Terrain Select, with Mud, Sand, Rock, Dirt and Snow modes

Fortuner Road Test Findings

What we liked

  • The tough suspension handles large potholes and broken roads with ease.
  • The diesel automatic is quick. It reached 100kph in 9.96 seconds in our tests.
  • The front seats are comfortable, the driving position is commanding and the third row can accommodate adults on longer trips.

What we did not like

  • The cabin uses hard plastics and average-quality switches.
  • It misses features such as a sunroof and ADAS that newer rivals offer.
  • The ride is bumpy at low speeds, body roll is noticeable and the steering feels heavy while parking.
  • The diesel engine sounds gruff when revved hard.

Who Should Buy The Fortuner?

Who it suits

Why?

Buyers who head off the road

As per us, it is one of the most capable off-road SUVs in its segment. The 4x4 can even wade through 700mm of water.

Buyers who value reliability and resale

It is built to last, and Toyota's wide service network makes ownership hassle-free.

Long-distance drivers

The torquey diesel makes overtaking effortless, and the Fortuner feels relaxed and stable at highway speeds.

Families who need seven seats

It seats seven, and the spacious second row slides and reclines.

The buyer it suits least is someone who wants a modern, feature-rich cabin for city driving.

Toyota Fortuner price & variants

The Fortuner range starts with the standard 4x2, followed by the Leader Edition, which adds blacked-out styling and a black and maroon cabin. The 4x4 versions add off-road hardware, while the Legender and GR-S get sportier styling and more equipment.

Toyota Fortuner price in India starts at Rs 34.76 lakh for the 2.7 Petrol 4x2 AT and goes up to Rs 50.46 lakh for the GR-S 2.8 Diesel 4x4 AT (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, Fortuner on road price in major Indian cities ranges from Rs 40. 50 lakh to Rs 63.84 lakh.

If you are considering the base 2.7 Petrol 4x2 AT, monthly EMIs start at Rs 58,725. Use our Fortuner EMI calculator to check the estimated monthly cost of any variant.

Which Fortuner variant should you buy?

  • Choose the 2.8-litre diesel 4x4 if you plan to go off-road regularly.
  • The 2.8-litre diesel 4x2 is more suitable for regular road use and costs less than the 4x4.
  • Pick the 2.7-litre petrol if you prefer a smoother engine and do not need 4x4.
  • As per us at Autocar India, the Neo Drive's mild-hybrid system offers limited benefits for its roughly Rs 2 lakh premium.
  • Consider the GR-S only if you want its sportier styling and unique details. It does not get the Neo Drive mild-hybrid system. The Fortuner top model price is worth considering if these styling upgrades matter to you.

Exterior Design And Engineering

8.0

The Toyota Fortuner continues to define the full-size SUV segment in India. Big, upright and built on a rugged ladder-frame chassis, it delivers the kind of road presence buyers in this class still value highly.
The 2021 facelift sharpened the design with a larger grille, revised bumpers and new LED lighting, while the Fortuner Legender introduced a far more aggressive front-end design with slimmer lamps, a larger air dam and dual-tone paintwork. The latest Neo Drive mild-hybrid version adds a 48V system to the 2.8-litre diesel engine.

Interior Space And Comfort

7.0

Inside, the Fortuner remains functional and spacious rather than luxurious. The dashboard design is familiar but durable, and It houses a 8-inch touchscreen. The Legender adds a more premium feel with dual-tone upholstery and some additional equipment.
Front-seat comfort is excellent thanks to the commanding seating position and supportive chairs. Visibility is another major strength. The second row is spacious enough for adults, though the third row remains best suited to occasional use. While the cabin no longer feels class-leading in terms of technology or richness, it still scores highly for practicality, comfort and durability.

Performance And Refinement

7.0

The Fortuner is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine producing 204hp and 500Nm when paired with 6-speed automatic, 420 Nm when paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Performance remains one of its biggest strengths. The diesel engine delivers immense low-end torque, making the Fortuner feel effortless in both city and highway driving. The SUV is capable of 0-100kph in around 11.2 seconds, making it one of the quickest ladder-frame SUVs in its segment.
The newer Neo Drive mild-hybrid system improves initial throttle response and refinement slightly, though the assistance remains subtle in regular driving.
Refinement has improved over older Fortuners, but the diesel still sounds gruff under hard acceleration. At cruising speeds, however, the SUV feels relaxed and composed.
The Fortuner is also available with a 2.7-litre petrol engine producing 166hp and 245Nm. As on that car, what you really enjoy here is the additional refinement. The extra dose of smoothness is really pleasing at low speeds, there's a good amount of power when you accelerate, and the fact that the motor makes its maximum power above 5,000 rpm, allows you to spin the engine fast as well.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

5.0

The ARAI figures for Fortuner are 10.3kmpl for petrol, 14.2-14.4kmpl for diesel depending upon the configuration and around 14.6kmpl for Neo Drive.
Toyota claims the Neo Drive mild-hybrid system can add around 43km of additional driving range from the Fortuner’s 80-litre fuel tank.

Ride Comfort And Handling

6.0

Ride quality remains distinctly SUV-like. The suspension absorbs rough roads and broken surfaces extremely well, and the Fortuner feels almost indestructible over poor terrain. However, the ladder-frame setup also brings compromises. The ride can feel busy at city speeds, body roll is significant around corners and the steering remains heavy at low speeds.
That said, highway stability is good, and the Fortuner feels reassuringly solid at speed. Off-road capability remains a major highlight, especially with the 4x4 variants that continue to offer genuine go-anywhere ability.

Features And Safety

The Fortuner range now includes features such as connected car technology, JBL audio, ventilated seats, wireless charging and multiple drive modes.
Safety equipment includes multiple airbags, traction control, hill start assist, hill decent control and off-road terrain systems.

Value For Money

5.0

Priced between roughly Rs 35 lakh and Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), the Fortuner is undeniably expensive. Objectively, rivals now offer more modern cabins, better ride comfort and stronger feature lists. Yet the Fortuner continues to dominate because it delivers something harder to quantify: durability, toughness, reliability and unmatched resale value.

Toyota Fortuner FAQs

Despite its body-on-frame construction that leads to a high floor, the Toyota Fortuner's third row is actually usable for adults even over slightly longer trips.

The heavy steering of the Toyota Fortuner requires more effort at slow speeds than in rivals, making parking maneuvers a bit challenging. The top-heavy nature of the Fortuner and noticeable body roll around the corners makes driving it in a spirited manner unenjoyable. The sheer size of this SUV can also pose a challenge, especially when navigating narrow lanes or finding suitable parking spots.

Standard variants of the Fortuner are based on the pre-facelift iteration of the SUV, whilst the Legender and GR-S are newer avatars based in the facelifted model that's sold in markets like Thailand and Indonesia. The facelift looks sharper and has a different interior theme, with the GR-spec featuring unique detailing over other Fortuner variants.

If outright off-roading capabilities, excellent resale value, long-term reliability and a strong reputation for the 'Toyota' and 'Fortuner' nameplates are of prime importance to you, then rivals like the MG Majestor, Jeep Meridian and Skoda Kodiaq may not be the right pick for you.

The Fortuner diesel produces 204hp and 500Nm (420 Nm manual) from its 2.8-litre engine, while its 2.7-litre petrol engine makes 166hp and 245Nm. The Fortuner diesel offers superior overall power and torque compared to the Thar Roxx diesel. That said, the latter's turbo-petrol version provides a lot more punch than its equivalent petrol-powered Fortuner.

Despite its high asking price, the Toyota Fortuner is missing options such as ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, a larger and slicker touchscreen, or a digital driver's display. The interior design is also dated and lacks the premium feeling one would expect from a car at this price bracket, plus the ride quality at low speeds is far from comfortable.

Hi, I currently own a Tata Hexa. I want to change my car because of the slow or limited availability of parts. I have finalized a 2015 Fortuner manual for Rs 16 lakh, which has 1.36 lakh km on the odometer. But I feel that spending Rs 16 lakh on a 10-year-old vehicle doesn’t make value sense. If I stretch my budget a little, I could go for the base variant of the XUV 7XO, which is readily available with a dealer. Am I thinking right? If I buy the Fortuner and keep it for three to four years, it will be due for FC when I sell it. At that time, the resale value will drop very steeply. Please guide me through this.

Verified
•1w

You are thinking in the right direction. The 2015 Fortuner is a proven, reliable workhorse, but at Rs 16 lakh for a 10-year-old car with 1.36 lakh km on the odo, it is difficult to justify from a value perspective. You are already at the point where the next owner will be factoring in the approaching face lift, and while Fortuners do hold value well, the depreciation curve will steepen as it gets older. The Mahindra XUV 7XO is the better long-term decision here. You get a brand-new car with a full warranty, modern safety features, and a far more comfortable and refined ownership experience. This Mahindra Car is also a genuinely capable SUV with strong diesel and petrol options, good highway manners and a much more modern cabin than the old Fortuner. The only reason to buy the Toyota Fortuner would be if you specifically want a rugged, old-school SUV with proven reliability and are willing to accept the age, mileage and upcoming facelift Otherwise, the 7XO is the smarter buy.

I currently own a 2017 Tata Hexa XTA automatic with 1,27,000km on the odometer and plan to replace it within the next 12 months. My key requirements are an automatic transmission, a genuinely comfortable third row for adults, excellent bad-road and hill-climbing capability, strong highway comfort for long-distance touring, and proven long-term reliability with minimal ownership headaches. The MG Majestor 4x4 is currently my leading contender, and I am happy to wait for the right vehicle rather than buying immediately. Considering my priorities, would you recommend waiting for the next-generation Toyota Fortuner, choosing the MG Majestor 4x4, or holding out for another upcoming SUV?

Verified
•2w

With a 15-year-old Hexa replacement in mind and priorities centred on adult-friendly third-row space, bad-road ability, highway comfort and, most importantly, proven long-term reliability, waiting for the next-generation Fortuner makes more sense than committing to the MG Majestor immediately. The new Fortuner is expected to make its India debut in 2027, with the familiar diesel likely to continue and a torque-converter automatic and 4WD expected. The MG Majestor 4x4 is the more sophisticated SUV on paper. Its 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel produces a lot of power, and its cabin is also considerably more modern and premium than the current Fortuner. However, it has not yet established the long-term reliability and resale record that matters for a buyer looking at another 10-15 years of ownership. It also currently has no official Bharat NCAP crash-test rating. The current Fortuner already has a strong record for durability, resale and hassle-free ownership, although its third row is still best regarded as occasional adult seating and its ride can feel busy compared with newer SUVs. The next generation should address some of the current model's dated cabin and technology, while retaining its ladder-frame architecture and off-road focus.

I am planning to buy a new vehicle for myself and my parents. I have seen the new Audi Q3 2026 and am quite interested in it, but I am not fully convinced about the petrol-only option. I was hoping for a hybrid version, especially considering fuel efficiency at this price point. Secondly, I am also looking for a 4x4 and am currently waiting for the new Fortuner. However, I am confused because many people are suggesting the new Scorpio N or Thar Roxx, saying that if the primary purpose is off-roading, there is no need to spend so much on a Fortuner. Please suggest what would be the better option for my requirements.

Verified
•3w

The Audi New Q3 is a good choice if you want a premium, comfortable SUV, but I would not buy it expecting a hybrid. The India-spec Q3 is expected to use a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 204hp, a 7-speed DCT and quattro AWD, with no confirmed hybrid version for India. If your requirement is genuine 4x4 capability, the Toyota Fortuner remains a very different proposition. The next-generation Fortuner is already being tested and is expected in India by early 2027. It is expected to retain petrol and diesel engines, 4x4 capability and the ladder-frame construction, while gaining a much more modern cabin and ADAS.The Mahindra Scorpio N is the sensible alternative if you want a capable 4x4 without spending Fortuner money. The Thar Roxx makes more sense if off-road ability is the priority, but it is less comfortable and practical as a family SUV.For parents, the Q3 will be considerably easier to live with in the city, while the Fortuner is better suited to long-distance touring and serious rough-road use.

Is it an intelligent decision to go for a 2nd hand Citroen C5 Aircross diesel, a 2022 model that has run around 45,000 km and is available for Rs. 11 lakh, or should I go for a second-hand Toyota Fortuner, a 2019 model that has run around 98,000 km and is priced at Rs. 25 lakh? I am looking for good driving comfort as well as strong pickup. Which would be the better choice?

Verified
•6w

Go for the used Citroen C5 Aircross diesel at Rs 11 lakh. It is the better fit for your priorities. The C5 Aircross is one of the most comfortable SUVs in its segment, with a genuinely plush ride and a refined diesel engine that offers strong mid-range performance and good highway manners. At 45,000 km and as a 2022 model, it is still relatively fresh, and you are getting a lot of car for the money. The Toyota Fortuner is a different proposition altogether. It is a rugged, reliable workhorse with excellent resale value and a reputation for longevity, but at 98,000 km and Rs 25 lakh, you are paying a significant premium for that reliability. It is also not as comfortable or as refined as the C5 Aircross, especially on long drives. The ride is firmer, and while the engine is strong, the overall driving experience is more utilitarian than premium. If your priorities are driving comfort and good pickup, the C5 Aircross is the smarter choice. The only caveat is Citroen's smaller service network than Toyota's, so make sure you have a service centre reasonably close by. If you are looking for a long-term ownership proposition with minimal hassle, the Fortuner still makes sense, but for your requirements, the C5 Aircross is the more intelligent decision.

Hello Autocar India team, I live in banglore. I currently own Hyundai Creta SX (O) 1.6 CRDI Diesel AT 2016 model. I want to upgrade my car because of the 10-year diesel vehicles rule. Most of my running is on highway so I am looking for automatic diesel 7-seater SUV for family. My bugdet is between Rs. 20 - 40 lakh. Initially, I had considered the Tata Safari Diesel AT, but I have listened on social media poor about Tata after-sales service, technical and electronic Issues, as well as panel gaps issues that are concerning me. Now, I have shortlisted Toyota Fortuner Diesel AT, Mahindra Scorpio N Diesel AT and Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel AT. Which SUV is better for my requirements? Also, will I have to face DPF-related issues in new diesel cars if we drive slowly?

Verified
•7w

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel AT. It is the best fit for your requirements. The XUV 7XO offers a strong 2.0 diesel engine, a comfortable ride, a spacious and well-appointed cabin, and a good balance between performance and practicality. It is also significantly more modern and feature-rich than the Scorpio N, while being far better value than the Fortuner. The Fortuner is a great highway SUV with a proven reliability record, but it is now showing its age, and at Rs 40 lakh-plus it is simply too expensive for what it offers. The Scorpio N is rugged and capable, but it is not as refined or as family-friendly as the XUV 7XO. The XUV 7XO is the most complete package for your needs. On the DPF question: modern diesel cars are generally fine as long as you do regular highway runs. The DPF regenerates naturally at sustained speeds. The issues tend to arise only with predominantly short, low-speed city driving. Your usage pattern is highway-heavy, so you should not have any problems.
