Harrier: Diesel or Petrol?

Tata Harrier price in East Godavari
On-road in East Godavari, the base model Smart 1.5 Turbo-GDI MT starts at 15.61 lakh and the top model Fearless Ultra Stealth 2.0 Diesel AT reaches 31.47 lakh. The Fearless X Dark 1.5 Turbo-GDI MT sits between the two at 25.25 lakh, and for most buyers that middle part of the range is where the sensible choice lies.
If you are financing the car, a loan of 14,00,000 on the base model Smart 1.5 Turbo-GDI MT means an EMI of 22,525 a month. Stepping up to the top model Fearless Ultra Stealth 2.0 Diesel AT raises that to 45,532 on a loan of 28,30,000. The monthly gap between the two is worth checking before you settle on a variant.
Why prices change from the base model to the top model:
The range opens with the turbo-petrol and finishes with the diesel, so your fuel choice and your variant choice are tied together rather than separate decisions.
The automatic gearbox is offered on both engines, and choosing it costs more than the equivalent manual.
The larger 14.53-inch screen, the driver assistance features and the seventh airbag all sit near the top of the range, so the last few steps carry most of the equipment.
The diesel automatic sits at the top of both the price list and the equipment list, which is why the top model Fearless Ultra Stealth 2.0 Diesel AT carries the biggest step up.
Registration, road tax and insurance are added to the ex-showroom figure, and the amount they add depends on the state you buy in. That is why the same variant costs more in one city than another.

Please advise which car would be the best choice for long-term ownership: the Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Safari, Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass, Volkswagen SUV, or any other suitable option. My priority is reliability, long-term durability, and hassle-free ownership over the next 10 years or more. I would appreciate suggestions based on real-world ownership experience, maintenance costs, spare parts availability, and after-sales support.
For long-term ownership, the Mahindra Scorpio N is the safest recommendation from your shortlist. It has a proven track record, robust mechanicals and a strong service network, making it a dependable choice for 5-10 years of ownership. The Tata Harrier and Tata Safari have improved significantly, but the Scorpio N still has the edge on long-term reliability and ownership confidence. The Jeep Compass is a good product, but it is now an ageing model and does not offer the same value proposition as the Scorpio N. If you are open to alternatives, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is worth considering. It is a more modern product with a better balance of comfort, features and refinement, and it is a strong long-term ownership proposition as well. The Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are excellent driver's cars, but they are smaller and do not offer the same level of space or road presence as the Scorpio N or XUV 7XO.
Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to buy the Tata Harrier by selling my 2021 Tata Nexon petrol XZ+ (O) Dark Edition, which has covered 30,000 km. I am confused about whether to choose the Harrier petrol or diesel. With the government introducing stricter emission norms, will buying a diesel car be a viable option in the long run? If I choose diesel, should I go for the manual or automatic transmission? Which gearbox is more durable? If I choose petrol, can I expect decent mileage from such a heavy car? Please advise.
We would recommend the Harrier diesel automatic if you do substantial highway driving or cover over 15,000km annually. If your usage is mainly within the city and your annual running is low, the petrol automatic is worth considering, although its fuel bills will be considerably higher than those of your Nexon petrol. The stricter emission norms coming into effect from April 2027 are fleet average fuel efficiency targets for manufacturers, not a ban on diesel cars. The diesel therefore remains a viable option, particularly if you intend to keep the Harrier for several years and regularly undertake long journeys. Fuel efficiency is the petrol Harrier's biggest drawback. In Autocar India's test, the petrol automatic returned 6.17kpl in the city and 12.49kpl on the highway, against 9.6kpl and 14.4kpl respectively for the diesel automatic. The automatic is more convenient in traffic, while the manual diesel offers slightly better efficiency. Neither gearbox should be chosen on durability assumptions alone.
Hi everyone ...i am Abhinav Gupta from Jaipur... For myself, I am a very huge & giant fan of cars... A true car-lover & car enthusiast... I'm maintaining a 2022 Tata Harrier diesel Manual Transmission...about it's mileage, it gives 11-12 km/l in city & 15-16 on highways ... I have done many road trips on this car & believe me ...its got great power & driving feel... About my long term experience, I am totally satisfied & would surely recommend anyone who is planning to buy this car
Hi, I am about to book Tata Harrier petrol automatic as my running is less but I am confused between Adventure X and Adventure X+ and there is only 35 to 45,000 rupees difference between these two variants in the showroom from where I am about to book the car.
With only Rs 35,000-45,000 separating the Adventure X and Adventure X+ at the dealer, the X+ is the one to choose. The two Tata Harrier variants have the same 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and six-speed torque converter automatic, so there is no difference in performance or basic driving experience. The extra money on the X+ gets you Level 2 ADAS, electronic parking brake with Auto Hold and rear disc brakes. The Adventure X already gets the important equipment such as the panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloys, 360-degree camera, digital instrument cluster and six airbags. For just Rs 35,000-45,000 more, the X+ additions are worthwhile, particularly Auto Hold for everyday traffic and the additional driver assistance features for highway use.
I purchased a Kia Sonet 1.0 iMT in 2024 after owning Maruti Suzuki Dzire for around 11 years. I was so bored of driving it for more than a decade that I rushed to change. I wanted a compact SUV as an upgrade but settled for a sub-compact SUV due to budget constrain or may be due to lack guidance and understanding. Soon after buying it, I realized that this is not the car that I want to drive. I want a vehicle that looks and feels rugged but at the same time, is usable for daily commute with 80 - 90% city drive. I want to feel the same way I feel when I drive my Royal Enfield (strong and rugged). In less than 3 years, I am looking for a change again but this is time I don't want to make the same mistake. I have a few cars in mind but I am not sure which one should I go for. I have shortlisted Renault Duster Hybrid (upcoming), Tata Harrier AT (diesel), Thar Roxx AT (diesel), Toyota Hyryder Hybrid and Hyundai Creta AT (Diesel or Petrol). I drive around 1000 to 1200 km per month, mostly in the city but when I plan for long drives to mountains in Himachal, Uttarakhand or even Leh, I shouldn't have to worry about it. My budget is between 17 to 19 lakh (ex-Showroom). Please advise.
Go for the Renault Duster Hybrid when it launches. It is the best fit for what you are looking for. You want a car that feels rugged and strong like your Royal Enfield, but is still usable for daily city driving. The Duster has always been known for its tough, no-nonsense character and excellent ride quality, and the new generation continues that tradition. The hybrid powertrain will make it much more suitable for your 80-90% city driving, while still being capable enough for long drives to the mountains without you having to worry about fuel efficiency or reliability. The Tata Harrier diesel is a good car, but it is a much larger vehicle and not as easy to live with in the city. The Thar Roxx/OG is a great lifestyle vehicle, but it is not practical as a daily driver. The Toyota Hyryder Hybrid is a sensible choice, but it does not have the same rugged character you are looking for. The Hyundai Creta diesel is a good all-rounder, but it does not feel as tough or as special as the Duster. With your running, you could consider the 1.3 turbo petrol Duster with the DCT as well. It is not the most efficient engine and gearbox combination, but given your limited running, the fuel economy penalty should not be significant.
