My Budget is 10 to 12 lakh, and my current car is a Kwid Petrol since 2016. And the total running is 74000 km. Now I want to shift to the upper segment to a compact SUV. But I am confused between pure petrol, CNG or Diesel option. Kindly suggest the right option.

Go petrol, and within your budget, the Renault Kiger is the sweet spot, especially since you are already in the Renault sales and service ecosystem. Your 74,000km since 2016 works out to about 7,500km a year, so diesel won’t pay back its extra cost and needs additional upkeep. Petrol will keep things simpler and the drive smoother. The Kiger's 1.0 turbo petrol engine feels smooth in traffic and still has enough for highway bursts, it rides over bad roads with ease, and the cabin feels like a genuine step up from your Kwid. Even the mid trims get the useful stuff you’ll actually use every day, but in your budget, you'll get a top-spec automatic too. The only real compromise is a boot that isn’t the biggest, and mileage will dip if you push it hard.If your top goal is the lowest running cost and you mostly drive in the city, the Maruti Brezza is another compact SUV that makes sense. However, in your budget, you'll only get a low to medium variant of this SUV.

Hello Autocar India Team, I am planning to buy a new family car with a maximum on-road budget of ₹13-14.5 lakh and would love your recommendation. My requirements include strong engine performance, good features, ample cabin space, 5-star safety, good fuel efficiency, comfortable ride quality, and solid build quality. I currently own a Renault Kwid and am looking for a car that would be a significant upgrade in every aspect, including performance, comfort, safety, and overall driving experience. My usage will be approximately 65% on rural roads and 35% in city driving, so ride comfort, ground clearance, and durability are especially important to me. I am particularly interested in the new Renault Duster Techno 1.0 variant and would like to know whether it would be a suitable choice for my needs. If not, please suggest other cars within this budget that you believe offer a better overall package. Thank you for your guidance.

If strong performance is high on your priority list, we would be cautious about the Renault Duster 1.0 Techno. While we have experienced this 1.0 turbo petrol engine in the Magnite, where it feels punchy and capable, the Duster is a significantly larger and heavier SUV, so we do not expect it to feel particularly quick or effortless, especially if you are looking for a meaningful upgrade from a Kwid in outright performance. If your heart is set on the Duster, the smarter move would be to stretch slightly for the 1.3 turbo petrol, which sits only a little above your budget and will feel substantially stronger and more satisfying to drive, especially on rural roads where effortless overtaking and usable performance matter. If you are open to alternatives, the Skoda Kushaq Classic+ 1.0 TSI is a very strong option. The turbo petrol engine feels punchy, the Kushaq is genuinely nice to drive, has good rear seat space, solid build and safety credentials that you are looking for.If fuel efficiency matters more than outright performance, then the Kia Seltos 1.5 petrol HTE(O) is worth considering as well. It will not feel as punchy as the turbo petrol options, but it is the most premium feeling of the lot, more efficient in everyday use and a very sorted family SUV overall.

I am looking for an SUV under ₹20 lakh. I love driving and live on a farm. I currently drive a Renault Kwid and cover around 10,000 km a year. Which car would you suggest?

Verified

Since you already own a Renault, the new Duster would be a great pick. With mostly rural roads, about 10,000 km a year and a Rs 20 lakh cap, you can opt for the Duster 1.3 turbo-petrol with either the manual or the DCT, depending on your preference. The 1.3 petrol feels strong and punchy once you get past the initial turbo lag, and the DCT is almost torque-converter smooth. The manual has a satisfying clutch and shifter action, though turbo lag feels slightly more pronounced with this gearbox. It stays steady at speed and the steering gives good confidence, so it will feel like a big step up from your Kwid. Ground clearance is good and the suspension handles broken patches well, so you won’t have to slow to a crawl for every rut, yet it still feels tight and enjoyable on a twisty road. Two things to note: it is not a true off-roader, so avoid deep slush and very uneven fields; and Renault’s dealer reach in smaller towns can be limited. Since you already own one, though, that should not be a major concern. If your routes are very rough and you often need to go into fields, look at the Mahindra Scorpio N instead. It is tougher and sits higher, but it is not as nice to drive on smooth roads as the Duster.

I am looking to buy a hatchback under 6 lakh. Which one should I buy? Currently, I am driving a Santro 2019 model and am pretty much happy with it.

Verified

For mostly city use and with a hard cap of Rs. 6 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio LXi (manual) fits you best. It keeps the same easy, light feel you’re used to in the Santro, so traffic and parking stay simple. Space is good for this price, with a rear seat and boot that work better than those of very small cars, so daily chores and the odd airport run won’t feel tight. And like Hyundai, Maruti has a wide service reach and low running costs, which suits someone who just wants a simple, fuss-free car.Know that the LXI is the base version, so it is quite basic inside and does not come with a music system or wheel covers, though these can be added through dealer accessories. If you want a bit more style and features at this price, the Renault Kwid is also worth a look, but first check service support in your area.Overall, for your city use and budget, the Celerio LXI lines up best with what you described.

Can you suggest some good used cars under ₹1.5 lakh? This will be my first car, and I plan to use it to build driving confidence. My usage will be minimal, with occasional driving and perhaps one long trip per month.

Verified

Go for a clean Maruti Wagon R VXi manual from a trusted seller; it is the easiest first car to live with under your budget and will help you build confidence fast. The Wagon R sits a little taller, so you step in and out easily and see the road clearly, which really calms nerves when you are new. The steering is light, the clutch is easy, and the gear shifts are simple, so city drives feel stress-free. For your once-a-month highway run, it cruises calmly at normal speeds. The AC is strong, and you will find Maruti service and parts almost anywhere, which keeps running costs low even if you use the car only sometimes. One thing to be aware of is that older Wagon Rs do not have many safety features by today’s standards. So, look for a car with at least a driver's airbag and ABS if possible. Also, it can lean a bit in fast turns, so do not push it hard on the highway. If you want something newer for the same money, a Renault Kwid 1.0 manual is worth a look; it feels nice to drive and has good ground clearance, but it is narrower for four adults. When you test drive, practice a tight U-turn, reverse into a parking spot, and do a short highway stretch. Buy the car that feels easiest to handle and has clear service records, even if it is a year older or a trim lower.

Suggest a good automatic car petrol within 6 lakh.

Unfortunately, you don't have too many automatic options within Rs 6 lakh (on-road). Your options are Maruti Alto, Maruti S-Presso, Renault Kwid, and thanks to some on-going discounts, you could even manage to get a Celerio VXi AMT, which is the nicest and most premium option among the ones listed.

I am looking for a small automatic car primarily for city driving. My priorities are a low price and good fuel efficiency. Could you please suggest the best options available?

Verified

Unfortunately, given your tight budget of Rs 6 lakh, you don't have too many options. Choose between the Maruti Alto and the Maruti S-Presso, both of which come with the same 1-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox. Both are also fairly similar in terms of fuel efficiency, with the Alto returning a claimed 24.90kpl while the S-presso is said to do a marginally higher 25.3kpl. Maruti Alto AT prices range between Rs 5.53 lakh to Rs 6.07 lakh (on-road Delhi), while S-presso automatic prices range between Rs 5.31 lakh and Rs 5.85 lakh (on-road Delhi). Alternatively, dealers will be offering discounts on models like the Maruti Celerio and Renault Kwid, so you could even consider those.

I want to buy an automatic car for my wife, who is a learner. Please advise between the Renault Kwid/Kwid Climber and the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10.

Verified

If she is a learner and a new driver, it will be better to go for the AMT version. The Renault Kwid Climber is a better choice than the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10. The Kwid is more spacious, has a bigger boot, and is more comfortable. The Kwid Climber is also more feature-rich and gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a rear parking camera.

My budget is around Rs 3 lakh, and I am looking for a family hatchback primarily for city commuting, for a family of four. Most of the options I am finding have been driven over 1,00,000 km and are usually second or third owner cars. My preference is for a Hyundai Eon or i10, but I am not getting a good deal. What should I ideally check while buying? Also, the car should be registered in 2016 or later.

Verified
30w

You can check out the pre-owned cars at Spinny. For your Rs 3 lakh budget, you should find models like a Renault Kwid and Maruti Suzuki Celerio that would meet your mileage and 'build year' criteria. You could also consider looking at older cars, as these are all checked and tested and come with a warranty. Moreover, while they may be older in age, you should be able to find a Hyundai Eon or i10 with lower mileage and a single-owner driven. Also, remember that when buying used, it all dependent on stock, which changes almost daily, so wait a while and keep checking for cars until you find the one that you are happy with.

Please suggest an AMT version of a used car under ₹3 lakh. It can be any small car.

Verified
32w

The Renault Kwid would be a good option for you. As far as AMTs go, the Kwid's gearbox does the job, but the car itself will feel like a bit of an upgrade over your current Maruti Alto. The Kwid has a few SUV-like design traits, the ground clearance is good, as is the ride, and you will get a version with an in-built touchscreen too.Bear in mind, though, that the gear selector on the AMT Kwid is a rotary dial and not a traditional gear lever, and this may feel odd to begin with. When buying used, make sure you buy from a reputed reseller for extra peace of mind.
