Renault Kwid vs Hyundai i 10

1w

I recently purchased a Hyundai Venue HX8 DCT and now want to replace my 10-year-old Hyundai i20 Magna Manual. Since E20 fuel is becoming standard, I am looking for a small, budget-friendly, E20-compliant car that is reliable for Kolkata’s heavy city traffic and can handle potholes and waterlogged roads well. My budget is under Rs. 7.5 lakh. The options I’m considering are the Renault Kwid Climber, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz, Tata Tiago Pure Plus, and Maruti Suzuki Celerio ZXi. I am also open to better suggestions if there are any.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz is the best fit for your requirements. It is E20-compliant, well-built and has a proven track record for reliability, which is important given your 10-year ownership experience with Hyundai. The Nios also offers a comfortable ride and good ground clearance for a hatchback, making it better suited for your requirements. The Tata Tiago is a strong alternative with a robust suspension setup, but Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience give the Nios the edge. The Kwid Climber is the most affordable option, but it does not feel as refined or as well put together as the Hyundai or Tata car. The Celerio is reliable and efficient, but it does not feel as premium as the Tata or the Hyundai. If you are open to a slightly higher budget, the Tata Punch mid variants are worth considering for their higher ground clearance and tougher suspension. Still, within your Rs 7.5 lakh limit, the Grand i10 Nios Sportz is the most balanced and dependable choice.

I am planning to sell my 2017 Renault Kwid for Rs. 2.7 lakh and buy the Tata Tiago EV Creative Plus 24 kWh. My daily city commute is around 30-35 km. Does upgrading to Tiago EV make financial and practical sense based on my usage?

Yes, the Tata Tiago EV Creative Plus 24kWh makes good financial and practical sense for your usage. With a daily city commute of 30-35km, the Tiago EV’s range is more than sufficient, and you will be able to charge at home and run the car at a very low cost per kilometre. The Tiago EV is also a significant upgrade over the Kwid in terms of refinement, safety and overall driving experience. It is a well-packaged city car with a comfortable ride, decent space and a simple, fuss-free ownership proposition. The only thing to keep in mind is that the 24kWh battery pack is best suited to city use, so if your usage pattern changes and you start doing regular long highway trips, you will need to plan charging stops accordingly. Overall, given your current usage, the Tiago EV is a sensible and cost-effective upgrade.

I am currently driving a 2017 Renault Kwid 800cc manual. I have noticed a nagging pain in my right knee every time I drive. I mostly drive in stop-and-go traffic. Could the clutch be the reason for it? I am also looking to upgrade to either the Kia Seltos IVT or the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza. My budget is Rs. 15-20 lakh. Will a higher seating position and a clutchless automatic transmission help reduce my knee pain? I am not very tall. Which would be the better car for my needs?

Yes, the clutch could well be a contributing factor to your knee pain, especially in stop-and-go traffic. As a car ages, the clutch can become heavier, and considering your Renault Kwid is almost a decade old, repeated use in traffic can put strain on the knee over time. Moving to an automatic will make a significant difference, as it eliminates the constant clutch operation and allows you to focus on braking and accelerating with your right foot only.Between the Kia Seltos IVT and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, the Seltos IVT would be the better choice for your needs. The IVT gearbox of the Kia car is smooth and effortless in traffic, and the higher seating position, wider cabin and more supportive seats will help with comfort on longer drives. The Brezza is a solid, reliable car, but the Seltos feels like a more substantial upgrade from the Kwid and will be more comfortable over the long term.Do keep in mind that while a higher seating position can help with visibility and comfort, the key benefit here is the automatic transmission. If you are not too tall, make sure you adjust the seat height and distance from the pedals so that your knee remains slightly bent when pressing the brake pedal fully. This will help reduce strain.Overall, the Seltos IVT is the better fit for your needs. It will make your daily commute far more comfortable and should help alleviate the knee pain you are experiencing.

My Budget is 10 to 12 lakh, and my current car is a Kwid Petrol since 2016. And the total running is 74000 km. Now I want to shift to the upper segment to a compact SUV. But I am confused between pure petrol, CNG or Diesel option. Kindly suggest the right option.

Go petrol, and within your budget, the Renault Kiger is the sweet spot, especially since you are already in the Renault sales and service ecosystem. Your 74,000km since 2016 works out to about 7,500km a year, so diesel won’t pay back its extra cost and needs additional upkeep. Petrol will keep things simpler and the drive smoother. The Kiger's 1.0 turbo petrol engine feels smooth in traffic and still has enough for highway bursts, it rides over bad roads with ease, and the cabin feels like a genuine step up from your Kwid. Even the mid trims get the useful stuff you’ll actually use every day, but in your budget, you'll get a top-spec automatic too. The only real compromise is a boot that isn’t the biggest, and mileage will dip if you push it hard.If your top goal is the lowest running cost and you mostly drive in the city, the Maruti Brezza is another compact SUV that makes sense. However, in your budget, you'll only get a low to medium variant of this SUV.
