Since E20 fuel is becoming standard, I am looking for a small, budget-friendly, E20-compliant car that is reliable for Kolkata’s heavy city traffic and can handle potholes and waterlogged roads well. Hi Autocar India, I recently booked the Maruti Suzuki Brezza LXi Turbo. With a budget of ₹Rs 8–9 lakh, I chose the base variant and plan to add a music system and rear camera later. This is my first new car, and my monthly running will be around 1,000–1,200 km, mostly highway commuting. I chose the Brezza Turbo over the Hyundai Exter HX4 because it offers better value, is a segment above, and suits my highway usage and preference for a higher seating position. I have two questions: First, should I be concerned about the turbo engine with increasing ethanol blending, as some reviewers advise against it? Second, I prefer a simple, low-maintenance car and only need a music system and rear camera apart from the standard LXi features. Can these be installed after a few months in the aftermarket without affecting the warranty, assuming the factory wiring and connectors are already provided? I am open to any other car suggestions that suit my needs if Brezza is not advisable.

You have made a sensible choice with the Maruti Suzuki Brezza LXi Turbo given your budget and usage. The Brezza will offer you the low maintenance motoring that you want, and since your commute is mostly on highways, the extra power from the turbo will come in handy. Turbo petrols are sensitive to driving style and can very easily be fuel inefficient, especially in the city, but again with your driving mostly on the highway, this should not be that nig of a worry. As for your concerns on E20, all engines today are engineered to handle E20 fuel and most manufacturers including Maruti, have stated that there is a material compatibility tolerance level built in for a slightly higher blend too.As for the music system and rear camera, yes, these can be installed in the aftermarket and generally dealers do not create a warranty issue around this; however, strictly speaking, it can be viewed as grounds for voiding a warranty, especially if the component affected is related to the accessory installed. Thus, if you are worried, then Maruti Suzuki car dealers can also fit these accessories later, which is the safest route from a warranty perspective.

For your wife's office commute with 95% city usage, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios automatic would be the better choice. While both the Grand i10 Nios and the Tata Tiago use AMT gearboxes, the Hyundai's AMT is smoother and better calibrated, making stop-and-go city driving more comfortable. It also has a more refined petrol engine, lighter steering and an overall more polished driving experience, all of which are well suited to daily urban commutes. The Tiago remains a good automatic car, especially if safety and a solid build are higher priorities, but for this specific use case, the Grand i10 Nios has the advantage in terms of ease of driving and refinement.

The choice really comes down to your usage and what you value in the car. If you need more space for both passengers and luggage and have a few long drives that you would undertake, then opt for the Tata Sierra. This Tata car is much larger and has a very spacious interior. The ride quality is also very good over both bad city roads as well as high highway speeds. If, however, your usage is mainly going to be within the city, then the Kia Syros is the better buy. Its compact footprint will be much easier to manage while driving congested streets, and finding parking would be easier. You would also enjoy the top variant of the Kia car and its features.

I am confused between Taigun 1.5 Sport and Seltos Diesel X-Line top model. I have owned the Polo AT and Vento AT in the past, so my love for Volkswagen is making this decision difficult.

Go for the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI Sport. Coming from a Polo and Vento automatic, you already appreciate Volkswagen’s driving DNA, and the Taigun 1.5 TSI is a natural progression. The engine is punchy, the DSG gearbox is quick and engaging, and the overall driving experience is far more involving than the Seltos. The Taigun also feels more compact and agile in the city, while still being comfortable on the highway.The Kia Seltos diesel X-Line is a strong all-rounder with better space, a more premium cabin and a more relaxed long-distance character, but it does not offer the same level of driver engagement. The diesel engine is efficient and torquey, but it lacks the excitement of the 1.5 TSI. Given your history with Volkswagen cars, the Taigun will simply feel more familiar and more enjoyable to drive every day.

Go for the Kia Carens Clavis diesel automatic. It is the most sensible and well-rounded choice for your requirements. The Carens is a genuinely spacious seven-seater with a comfortable third row, which is important when the car will be shared between families. The diesel automatic is the right powertrain for strong fuel efficiency and effortless performance, especially on highways and with a full load. The Carens also comes well equipped with features like a panoramic sunroof, and Kia’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The only real drawback is that the Carens does not have the same SUV-like road presence as some rivals, but as a practical family car it is hard to fault. If you want something with a more rugged SUV feel, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic is worth considering, but mileage would be lower. The Carens is the better all-round family car.
