I’m looking for an SUV in the ₹80 lakh range. I’m considering the Volvo XC60, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Lexus NX 350. My monthly running is about 600 km, and I want a vehicle that offers comfortable, refined driving performance. Which is the best choice?

While the Volvo XC60 is an excellent option in this segment, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 will be the better buy. It is the most powerful SUV in the segment, has more wow-factor when it comes to the interior, will hold its value a lot better and has a comfier ride.

Yes, it is more expensive, but all things considered, it is worth spending extra and getting a well-rounded SUV.

I am currently driving a Jeep Compass and am planning to upgrade. I have shortlisted the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, or should I wait for the upcoming Audi Q5? Please share your feedback.

In this list, the Mercedes-Benz GLC would be a good choice as it has a strong engine, premium interiors and good ride comfort as well. The BMW X3 is roomy, but lacks the luxury appeal of the GLC's interior, and the GLC also holds its value better.
The Audi Q5 will be the newest car once it launches in 2026, but there is no official confirmation on the same. Currently, the GLC is your best bet.

I want to upgrade my car. My budget is around 80-90 lacs, and I'm considering the GLC 300, X3 and the Velar (I prefer SUVs over sedans). I've also been suggested to consider the Porsche Macan, but I believe with the add-ons the costing will 1+ cr. My apprehension with the Velar is the reliability and the maintenance costs. My running is around 1000-1200 km p.m. and will be self-driven.

Both the Land Rover Range Rover Velar and the Porsche Macan will run you close to Rs 1 crore on road. Moreover, the Macan is showing its age now and is quite cramped on the inside, though it remains the best SUV to drive among your shortlist.
Yes, Land Rovers are plagued with a history of poor and expensive service, but there have been great improvements in recent years, more so since local assembly has begun, and parts are not as hard to come by.
Though more conventional, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3 are safer bets and offer more bang for your buck. Of the two, it's the GLC that feels like the best all-rounder.

I want to upgrade my car and have a budget of ₹60-80 lakhs. Should I go for the Land Rover Discovery Sport Diesel, BMW X1, BMW X3, wait for the upcoming Audi Q5, or consider the Jeep Meridian?

In your budget, it's best to go for the BMW X3, although you might have to stretch by Rs 2-3 lakh. It is the newest SUV, offering a strong 2.0-litre diesel engine, plus the latest tech and a spacious and comfortable cabin. The Discovery Sport is a capable car, but it is quite old now and its age shows; if you need a third row of seats, however, do consider it. The X1, in comparison, is a segment below and offers less powerful engines and, of course, less space. The new Audi Q5 launch is some time away, and while it is capable, note that it will only come in petrol guise, not diesel. You could also consider the Mercedes-Benz GLC, whose 2.0-litre diesel is also strong, and it offers a spacious and luxurious cabin as well.

I want to upgrade my car and am confused between the Land Rover Discovery Sport (diesel), BMW X3, Jeep Meridian, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. What would be your advice? Can I still buy a diesel car, considering I plan to keep it for the next 7 years?

Diesel as a fuel should be around for a long while; however, resale values could dip due to uncertainty from authorities regarding its future.
Of the SUVs you’ve mentioned, we recommend the Mercedes-Benz GLC, though you could also consider the BMW X3 if it better suits your specific needs.

I am planning to buy the 2024 Mercedes GLC. My question is whether I should go for the diesel or the petrol engine. I usually drive in the city, covering around 8,000 km a year. I’m also getting the diesel version for Rs 2 lakh less. Please give me a detailed answer to help me with this dilemma. Hoping for a quick reply.

Since your running will be considerable, it’ll be worth going for the Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d diesel. While it won’t be as refined as the petrol, the diesel will offer better fuel efficiency and the fact that you’re getting the diesel for Rs 2 lakh cheaper, sweetens the deal further.
