I am planning to buy a new compact SUV with a budget of 15L. My yearly running would be around 10k kms (50% bumper-to-bumper and 50% highways). I am confused between Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi AMT and the Hyundai Creta EX (O) (both petrol). Please suggest a better option (not particularly from these two). I felt Brezza's interior isn't good enough, but it beats Creta petrol in mileage. Haven't considered Tata or Mahindra because of the reliability factor.

Between the two options you have selected, you can pick the Hyundai Creta. It has better interiors and is more spacious, too. Hyundai Creta's 1.5-litre engine is a refined unit and performs well for everyday usage. It is also the most efficient unit among the ones being offered on Creta. In our real-world mileage test, the mileage was not significantly different for Brezza and Creta.
The other option you can consider is from Hyundai's sister brand Kia, the Setos, which was launched recently, offers more space, a fresh cabin and the latest tech. The looks are a little polarizing, but if you don't mind it, the Kia Seltos can be a better bet.

I want to upgrade to a new automatic car primarily for city driving in Bangalore, with occasional highway trips. My budget is ₹15 to 17 lakh. Should I choose the Kia Seltos or Tata Sierra, or is there a better option?

The powertrain to pick in the Tata Sierra lineup is the 1.5 Turbo Petrol with AT, but for that, you will have to pay around 21 lakhs. Within your budget, you can consider the Kia Seltos HTK CVT. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is a smooth and refined one, and the CVT on offer is one of the smoothest gearboxes in the segment. While CVTs have a rubber band effect, it's not that apparent in city driving, where it feels smooth. Seltos is now bigger than earlier and has decent features too.

I am planning to buy a new car within a budget of Rs 20-22 lakh. My preference is Honda/Toyota/Kia, and Mahindra cars. Should I go for 7XO/Seltos or should I wait for upcoming models from Toyota or Honda? Please suggest. Also suggest between 7XO and Seltos.

The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a good option to consider. It is spacious, comfortable, and has a strong set of features. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is punchy, and the automatic gearbox is smooth too. The new suspension gives it an excellent ride, and the feature set is vast, too.
The Kia Seltos is another option worth considering, but it has a much bolder design. The interior is high quality, but the overall space isn't better than the Mahindra car. Between the two, the Mahindra XUV 7XO would be our recommendation.

I am planning to buy a new automatic car with a budget of ₹16.5 lakh. I am considering the Hyundai Creta EX optional IVT, Kia Seltos HTE optional, and Maruti Victoris VXi AT. Are these good options, or should I consider any other car?

The Kia Seltos HTE(O) is the pick of the three models on your shortlist. Its engine and gearbox (shared with the Creta) are very smooth and refined, and what also sets it apart is its spacious cabin, which is the roomiest of the three.
This Kia car also delivers the best ride comfort of the three SUVs. The HTE(O) gets its share of goodies, too, like a slick 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital dials, and will make you feel like you got the most for your money.

Hi, I am looking for a mid-size automatic SUV mainly for city use. It should comfortably seat 5 adults and offer decent boot space. My budget is ₹10-15 lakh on-road. I like the Kia Seltos and Maruti Grand Vitara, and I am not keen on Mahindra or Tata vehicles. Which one would you recommend?

You should know at the outset that both these SUVs will only be available in their base and lower variants at your budget of Rs 10-15 lakh on road; top variants cost more than Rs 20 lakh. But with that in mind, of your shortlisted two, we would recommend the Kia Seltos.
While the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is efficient and smooth, its rear seat feels too cramped for five, and its boot is not huge, either. The Kia Seltos, being a much larger car, offers noticeably more rear-seat space and a bigger boot. It's also better built and has more modern tech on the inside.

I own a 2020 Hector (manual, petrol). My daily usage is predominantly within Bangalore city, with 6-8 long highway drives per year. I am happy with the comfort of the Hector, but it is not fun to drive at all. I'd like advice on a 5-seater petrol SUV (manual or automatic), that offers better features and driving experience than Hector. The cost of ownership is also important to me. I have seen the Tata Sierra, and I did not like what I saw. I am looking at changing my car in the next 1-2 months. Kindly help.

Since you are looking for a petrol SUV, we would recommend the new Kia Seltos. It is a well-rounded package and is fun to drive. This Kia car also offers a spacious and well-equipped cabin, and the ride quality is comfortable, too. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is punchy and smooth, but of the two gearboxes available, we would recommend the 7-speed DCT auto.
The reason is that Kia doesn't offer a manual gearbox with this engine, but instead an iMT, which is a semi-automatic 'clutchless' manual, wherein you shift gears without needing to use a clutch pedal. While good in theory and certainly a relief for your right foot, it's not great for enthusiastic driving and tends to slow your progress; a proper automatic is ultimately a better bet.

I am planning to buy either a Hyundai Creta or a Kia Seltos with an overall budget of ₹20 lakh. Which one is the better option, or should I consider something entirely new?

If you are in the market for an SUV to buy right away, we suggest you go for the Kia Seltos. While the two SUVs are closely related, the recently launched Seltos is based on a new-gen platform and comes with advancements in safety, tech and refinement, and is also significantly more spacious. The next-gen Hyundai Creta that will be based on the same platform is about a year away from launch.
What also makes the new Setlos' case stronger is the fact that pricing is very tempting, being about at par with the now gen-old Creta.

I am planning to buy the Kia Seltos HTX variant with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. I am confused between choosing the manual transmission or the IVT automatic. I have been driving manual cars for 15+ years, and my monthly driving is around 500km, mostly within the city. Please advise which transmission would suit me better. Also, does Kia’s IVT have issues similar to a DCT?

The Kia Seltos HTX 1.5 petrol with a CVT automatic transmission (IVT) is a good option for you since you drive quite a bit in the city. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is refined, and the IVT gearbox is seamless and responsive. Also, a CVT gives you more convenience than a manual, and it will be more reliable than a dual-clutch transmission (DCT), too.

I am confused between the Sierra Pure 1.5 NA petrol MT and the Victoris VXI MT/AT. My priorities are safety and reliability, and my annual driving is around 8,000km. I have test-driven the Victoris AT and found it very smooth, but rear-seat headroom and shoulder room felt limited compared to the Sierra. Since the Sierra is a new model, I am unsure about its performance and long-term reliability. Please advise.

Purely as a chauffeur-driven car, the Tata Sierra 1.5 NA petrol MT is an excellent choice for its easy-going, refined nature and a very comfortable cabin. However, its engine performance is lacklustre, and the Maruti Suzuki Victoris will feel much better in comparison. Maruti's petrol engine is nicer, drivability is better, and it is likely to be more fuel efficient, too.
If rear seat space is your priority, you could consider the Hyundai Creta 1.5 Petrol MT or Kia Seltos 1.5 Petrol instead, which are more spacious than the Victoris. Out of these, the Kia is newer and a touch more spacious than the Creta, hence it is the one that gets our vote.

My brother wants to buy a new car with a strict budget of ₹20 lakh. The budget cannot be extended any further. His daily driving is within the city, with highway use being very rare. He drives about 45km every day. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall, and we are a family of four. Please recommend a suitable car within this budget.

The new Kia Seltos with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and IVT (automatic) is the one to get. It feels thoroughly modern, offers the latest features and technology, and is more spacious and comfortable than before. The Petrol-IVT combination works seamlessly and delivers a smooth driving experience. This powertrain is available across a wide price band, hence you will certainly find more than one variant within your budget.
