I am planning to buy a new 7-seater and am confused between the Kia Carens Clavis and Maruti Ertiga, both with naturally aspirated petrol engines. I do not like the new air-conditioning setup in the Ertiga. Could you advise on the Carens Clavis in terms of mileage, reliability, and long-term service costs?

The Kia Carens Clavis is a great 7-seater. It is very spacious, and even tall adults can sit in the last row without any issue. The cabin feels very premium, with high-quality materials used, and even the lower variants offer impressive standard equipment, which makes the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol versions excellent value for money. The 1.5L petrol engine is smooth and refined, and in our tests, it accelerated quickly than the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, indicating better drivability too. This engine is shared with the Carens, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Verna, and it has been quite reliable so far. Service and maintenance costs are also on par with, or even lower than, its rivals.

I’m planning to buy either the Kia Carens Clavis or the Hyundai Alcazar. Please advise which one would be better.

Assuming you’re considering these two models because they offer a third row of seats, the Kia Carens Clavis would be the better choice. This Kia car offers easier access to the third row thanks to its electric one-touch tumble function, and space and comfort at the back are superior. Carens Clavis and Hyundai Alcazar share their turbo-petrol and diesel engines, so there isn’t much difference in performance.

I want to buy the Creta S Summer Edition Diesel Manual. My family has four members and one dog, and we love going on long drives. How suitable is this car for our requirements?

The Hyundai Creta diesel manual is a very sensible choice for your requirements. With four family members and a dog, the Creta offers enough space for comfortable long drives, and the boot is large enough to accommodate luggage and a dog crate or bedding. The diesel engine is the real highlight here – it is refined, fuel-efficient and has strong mid-range performance, which makes highway cruising effortless and overtaking easy. The manual gearbox is smooth and easy to use, and the overall driving experience is relaxed and comfortable, which is exactly what you want on long journeys. The S Option Summer Edition is a well-equipped variant, so you get most of the essential features without stretching the budget unnecessarily. Hyundai’s service network is extensive, and the Creta has a strong reputation for reliability and low maintenance costs, which adds to the ownership peace of mind.If you have a large dog and want a bit more room, it might be worth looking at the Kia Carens Clavis diesel. While you don't need the third row, the boot is significantly larger and gives you more room for the dog and luggage.

I have a Maruti Suzuki XL6 and a Baleno petrol, and I want to replace the Baleno with a diesel 7/8-seater. Which car should I choose? My annual running is around 15,000-20,000 km, and my budget is Rs 20 lakh.

With an annual running of 15,000- 20,000 km and a budget of Rs 20 lakh, a diesel 7/8-seater is a sensible choice. The Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel is the recommendation here. It is a genuinely spacious 7-seater with a strong diesel engine, comfortable ride, and good highway manners, making this Mahindra car well suited to long-distance family use. The diesel engine is refined and efficient, and at your running, the fuel cost savings over petrol will be meaningful over time. The Kia Carens Clavis diesel is a good alternative if you want something a bit more compact. This Kia car also has a better third row than the Mahindra. However, the XUV 7XO diesel strikes the best balance of space, comfort, performance, and value for your requirements.

I currently drive a Honda City CVT. My budget is Rs. 20 lakh, and I am looking to buy a 7-seater automatic car. I am 61 years old. Please suggest the best options for me.

Go for the Kia Carens Clavis petrol automatic. At Rs 20 lakh, it is the most sensible 7-seater upgrade from your Honda City CVT. The Carens is easy to drive, has a comfortable ride and a refined 1.5 turbo petrol engine. The third row is properly usable for adults, and the overall ownership experience is reliable and hassle-free. The Maruti Ertiga automatic is the other sensible option, but the Clavis feels more premium and is a better upgrade from a City. The Carens Clavis strikes the right balance between comfort, ease of driving and value for money.
