Tata is developing an all-new midsize electric SUV, internally codenamed ‘Kuno’, to take on the MG Windsor EV, our sources suggest. Expected to arrive in 2027-28, the approximately 4.3m-long EV will be positioned between the next-gen Nexon EV (codenamed Garud) and the current Sierra EV in the brand’s lineup.
- Likely to be manufactured at Tata’s Sanand facility
- Powertrain and pricing strategy details are unknown
The Kuno will be part of Tata Motors' plan to expand its EV range from six to 10 models by FY2031, announced at its Investor Day in June 2026.
Tata ‘Kuno’ EV: All we know so far
Platform, design and body style
The Kuno will be based on Tata's Acti.ev dedicated electric platform, which supports different body styles and powertrain layouts, including front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD). The platform's flat floor and optimised battery-pack layout should let Tata maximise cabin space in the Kuno, helping it compete with the MG Windsor EV, whose spacious, family-friendly cabin is a key selling point.
The Kuno is likely to be manufactured at Tata's Sanand facility in Gujarat. Tata is understood to be planning an annual production capacity of 80,000 to 1 lakh units, indicating that the carmaker expects the midsize SUV to capture a sizeable chunk of the midsize EV market. The Kuno will add another SUV to Tata’s midsize EV lineup, joining the Curvv EV and Sierra EV.

Do note that the name 'Kuno' is an internal project codename and is unlikely to be the vehicle's final production name.
Battery, powertrain and range expectations
Tata has yet to reveal the Kuno’s battery and powertrain specifications. However, given its positioning alongside the Curvv EV and Sierra EV, it could borrow battery and motor options from either model. The Curvv EV is offered with a 55kWh battery pack, paired with a 167hp, 215Nm front-axle-mounted electric motor, and has a claimed range of 502km. The Sierra EV, on the other hand, gets 65kWh and 75kWh battery options, with claimed ranges of up to 535km and 665km, respectively. Its rear-wheel-drive (RWD) versions produce 238hp and 209hp, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) version develops a combined 349hp and 504Nm.
Its pricing strategy is not yet known, but given its planned positioning in the midsize EV segment, the Kuno could be priced in a similar bracket to the Curvv EV (Rs 17.19 lakh-19.39 lakh) and Sierra EV (Rs 18.79 lakh-25.99 lakh).
