The upcoming Range Rover Velar EV has been spied on test for the first time, giving us an idea of what to expect from the new SUV. The Velar, which debuted in 2017, is due for a generational update soon, and the spy shots reveal possible new features compared to the current model, including an exclusive electrified powertrain.

  1. Next-gen Velar will likely be EV-only
  2. Gets evolutionary styling updates
  3. Debut expected next year

Range Rover Velar EV spy shots: what’s new?

According to the latest spy shots shared by our friends atMotor.es, the Velar EV will feature a host of styling upgrades over the current ICE-only model. Unlike the subtle differences seen between the Range Rover and the upcomingRange Rover Electric, Sport, andSport EV, the Velar EV gets more substantial updates, which is probably down to the fact that it will a generational update.

Fully wrapped in camouflage, the Velar EV seems to get further sweptback headlamps, with a redesigned fascia. The flush door handles have been retained, while the rest of the side profile seems like an evolutionary update with a sharper shoulder line. At the rear, the test mule hints at slim LED tail-lamps, which will likely be connected with a plaque featuring the Range Rover emblem - similar to the Sport.

While the interior is barely visible in the latest spy shots, we expect it to pack larger screens for the infotainment and instrument cluster and a host of additional equipment over its predecessor.

Range Rover Velar EV spy shots: platform, specs

The Velar EV will be based on the electric modular architecture (EMA), and will likely be exclusively offered with an electric powertrain, unlike the existing model that offers both petrol and diesel options. Specs of the Velar EV will made available closer to its global debut, which will likely take place some time next year.

It was recently revealed that Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin will lay the foundation stone of Tata Motors-JLR's new Rs 9,000 crore plant in the state on September 28. As per our sources, this facility will primarily be used to produce EVs based on the EMA platform.
