The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has just taken back the title of the fastest road-legal car around the Nürburgring – with a blistering time of 6min 40.3sec – from the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, which set a time of 6min 44.9sec earlier this year.

The car that set the record had been specifically modified for the ‘Ring’ by Porsche and the US-based Manthey-Racing, which works with the 911 RSR variant in the World Endurance Championship. Porsche stated that all the modifications done were to improve on-road driving and that at no point was the 700hp, 3.8-litre engine touched.

Porsche also went on record to say that the only difference between the standard GT2 RS and the track-prepped Manthey-Racing GT2 RS was the installation of race seats on the latter. They have gone on to say that this change was carried out in line with Nürburgring safety recommendations and offered no benefits in terms of weight savings. These modifications have not hindered the Porsche’s off-track usability, making it eligible for the road-legal lap time record.

Lars Kern had previously driven the standard Porsche 911 GT2 RS car for the record-breaking time of 6min 47.2sec beating the then record holder, the Lamborghini Huracán Performante. He is also the one to set the current record in the modified Porsche 911GT2 RS MR (Manthey-Racing), where he managed to shave 6.9sec off the standard car’s lap record.
