Mahindra’s Thar 5-door, which could be called the Thar Armada, has been spied testing across the country for over a year now, and if latest spy shots are to be believed, the launch is finally inching closer.

  1. Thar 5-door will go on sale this year
  2. Will get at least two powertrain options
  3. Higher variants will get a single-pane sunroof

Mahindra Thar 5-door: different mules show unique details

The latest set of spy shots show that the Thar 5-door will get three different variations, with the entry-level variant coming with steel wheels. The five-spoke alloy wheels will likely be reserved for the mid-spec variants, while the higher-end variants will be equipped with 19-inch multi-spoke diamond-cut alloys that were previously seen in another set of spy shots.

Other styling bits will include a new grille, redesigned bumpers, a rear wiper and a remote fuel-filling cap over the Thar 3-door. Top variants will get LED lights all around, and the tail-lamps will be slightly different from the 3-door version.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: interior highlights

The cabin of the Thar 5-door is partially visible in the latest spy images, but we can see the beige coloured seats on the top-end model. Mahindra will offer the Thar Armada with different interior themes unlike the Thar 3-door that gets an all-black layout as standard.

Older spy shots have revealed that the SUV will get a slightly redesigned dashboard in order to incorporate a bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that will be carried over from the XUV400, and will also make its way to the upcoming XUV300 facelift. The Thar 5-door will also get a similarly sized fully digital instrument cluster, push button start-stop, front and rear centre armrests, a sunroof and rear AC vents, among other creature comforts.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: expected powertrain options

The Thar 5-door is expected to borrow the Scorpio N’s 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol powertrains with identical power outputs. The lifestyle SUV will be available with both 4WD and 2WD options in order to appeal to a wider range of buyers.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: launch timeline, expected pricing

The Thar 5-door launch will go on sale in the second half of this year, and it will be Mahindra’s next big launch after the XUV 3XO. The Thar 5-door will likely have a slightly higher price point compared to the Scorpio N, which means it could start from around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom).

Upon arrival, the Mahindra Thar 5-door will rival the Force Gurkha 5-door that's set to go on sale very soon.
