Jeep Grand Cherokee: what’s new for India?

Jeep had commenced road-testing the new Grand Cherokee SUV earlier this year, and unlike its predecessor, it will be assembled in India. This will make it Jeep’s fourth locally assembled SUV, following the Wrangler, Compass and the Meridian. While the latest-gen Grand Cherokee is sold in two sizes overseas, sources tell us that India will get the standard five-seat version and not the longer three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Jeep has also confirmed that India will be the first market outside North America to have the SUV locally assembled.

Jeep Grand Cherokee India launch in mid-November Jeep has been testing the new Grand Cherokee in India since March this year.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: styling and features

The latest Grand Cherokee looks fresh, with styling cues borrowed from newer Jeeps like the Wagoneer and even the Meridian. It gets multiple displays on the dashboard, including a large 10.1-inch central touchscreen, a digital instrument screen, and another dedicated touchscreen in front of the co-driver; Jeep had earlier confirmed that the India-spec SUV will receive this third dashboard-mounted display. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee will also come with a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, and a powered tailgate.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: powertrain and tech

For the new Grand Cherokee, Jeep has ditched the diesel engine option. The upcoming SUV will only get a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. As far as safety tech goes, the Jeep SUV will come with ADAS in India, as officially confirmed by the brand. The new Grand Cherokee come with four-wheel drive and selectable terrain modes – Auto, Sport, Mud/Sand and Snow.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: rivals in India

The Grand Cherokee will go up against luxury SUVs like the Mercedes GLE, BMW X5 and the Land Rover Discovery in India. Expect deliveries to begin by end-2022 in some cities.
