KTM 390 Adventure Expert Review

The new 390 Adventure gets a Dakar Rally-inspired design that gives it a more purposeful look. The bodywork uses tougher material similar to KTM’s international dirt bikes. The panels are pigmented, so scratches reveal the same colour underneath.

The seat height has dropped to 830mm from 855mm. The lower weight and improved weight balance make the bike easier to manage. The riding position is better suited to off-road riding, while the firm seat can cause discomfort after about an hour. The tall windscreen works well on highways but limits airflow in the city.

The 399cc engine produces 46PS and 39Nm. It offers strong high-rev performance while remaining easy to use at lower speeds. The bike completed 0-100kph in under 6 seconds, making it the quickest in its segment. Vibrations are noticeable at city speeds but remain manageable on highways.

The 390 Adventure feels light and agile on the road, with quick direction changes and good cornering ability. Off-road, the 21-inch front wheel, high ground clearance and longer suspension travel make it capable on rough terrain. The suspension can bottom out over bigger jumps but offers adjustment at both ends.

It gets a 5-inch TFT display, cruise control, bi-directional quickshifter, traction control and switchable rear ABS. There are three riding modes: Rain, Street and Off-Road. The bike also gets tubeless-compatible spoked wheels and an aluminium bash plate.

The new 390 Adventure offers a strong mix of performance, off-road ability, features and everyday usability. The 390 Adventure X is a cheaper alternative. Overall, it is a major improvement over the previous-generation model.
