With the launch of the 390 Adventure R, KTM now offers three distinct variants in the 390 Adventure line-up in our market. While all three share the same engine, they differ significantly in their hardware, features and intended use. Here’s a breakdown of what sets each one apart.

KTM 390 Adventure X

The 390 Adventure X is priced at Rs 3.28 lakh

KTM 390 Adventure family: Price and variants explained

The KTM 390 Adventure X is the entry point into the 390 Adventure family and offers the most road-biased setup of the three. With 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, the Adventure X makes the most sense for someone who will spend most of their time on tarmac and not off-road.

That said, with 200mm front and 205mm rear suspension travel, along with 228mm ground clearance, you should be able to tackle soft trails with ease. Keep in mind, though, that unlike the other two variants in the 390 Adventure family, the Adventure X lacks adjustability for rebound and compression damping. Lastly, with a seat height of 825mm and a kerb weight of 181kg, it’s also the most accessible option and the lightest of the trio.

The Adventure X comes loaded with features such as a 5-inch TFT display, a projector LED headlight, a bi-directional quickshifter, ride-by-wire technology, rear switchable ABS, cruise control, traction control, cornering ABS and riding modes. The only feature it misses out on compared to the standard Adventure is cornering traction control, making it an exceptionally value-rich proposition for riders who prioritise touring over serious off-roading.

KTM 390 Adventure R

The 390 Adventure R is priced at Rs 3.78 lakh

KTM 390 Adventure family: Price and variants explained

The KTM 390 Adventure R is the most off-road-capable variant in the line-up and the latest addition to the 390 Adventure family in India. Despite being positioned as the hardcore option, it is priced Rs 19,000 lower than the 390 Adventure, largely due to the tube-type tyres instead of the standard variant’s tubeless setup.

The biggest changes centre around its off-road hardware. The Adventure R gets long-travel suspension borrowed from the international-spec 390 Enduro R, with 230mm of travel at both ends – about 30mm more than the standard Adventure. This comes courtesy of fully adjustable 43mm WP Apex USD forks at the front and an adjustable monoshock at the rear.

The Adventure R rides on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheels with off-road-biased tube-type Mitas E-07+ Enduro Trail tyres. Ground clearance jumps to a substantial 272mm, while the seat height increases to 880mm, making it the tallest of the three. It’s also the heaviest of the lot with a kerb weight of 183kg.

It retains the same feature set as the 390 Adventure, including the 5-inch TFT display, all electronic aids, cruise control, cornering traction control and bi-directional quickshifter. If you’re serious about off-roading and have the experience to use this motorcycle to its full potential, the 390 Adventure R is a potent tool to add to your stable.

KTM 390 Adventure

The 390 Adventure is priced at Rs 3.97 lakh

KTM 390 Adventure family: Price and variants explained

The KTM 390 Adventure sits at the top of the KTM line-up in India, offering a slightly less hardcore off-road package than the 390 Adventure R. The key differentiator is its wheel setup – 21-inch front and 17-inch rear tubeless spoke wheels – and suspension.

The standard Adventure features the same 200mm/205mm of suspension travel as the 390 Adventure X, but it gets adjustability for rebound and compression damping, allowing riders to fine-tune their setup. It offers 237mm of ground clearance and an 830mm seat height, which is slightly taller than the Adventure X. The kerb weight is 182kg, making it just 1kg heavier than the Adventure X but still manageable.

As mentioned above, the 390 Adventure gets a comprehensive suite of electronics, including cornering traction control that’s absent on the Adventure X. The KTM 390 Adventure strikes a middle ground between the other two. If you plan to venture off-road fairly often over terrain where the 390 Adventure X might start to feel limited but don’t need the hardcore capabilities of the 390 Adventure R, the standard 390 Adventure could be the most well-rounded option for you.
