Scooter market in India growing and seeing changes

Electric scooters from Ather, Bajaj and TVS are seeing strong growth

Longstanding scooter market leader Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India registered factory dispatches of 6,42,106 units in Q1 FY2026. This is quite a huge drop of over 1.50 lakh units compared to Q1 FY2025 (7,94,835 units) and results in its market share reducing to 39 percent from 48 percent last year.

TVS Motor, which has four petrol scooters and two EVs in its stable, sold 4,76,196 units in April-June 2025. This is a big improvement over the 3,86,633 units in Q1 FY2025, which results in TVS’ scooter market share rising substantially to 29 percent from 23 percent a year ago.

While TVS’ petrol scooters sold 4,06,706 units, up 20 percent YoY, the iQube electric scooter, with 69,490 units, has clocked 41 percent YoY growth (Q1 FY2025: 49,164 iQubes). This gives TVS a 15 percent EV penetration level in its overall scooter sales.

Suzuki Motorcycle India has maintained the growth trajectory it displayed in FY2025, increasing its market share to 16 percent from 15 percent a year ago. It dispatched 2,72,682 scooters in the first quarter, up 11 percent YoY. While the Access remains its bestselling product, what helps Suzuki is that its other scooters – the Avenis and Burgman models – are also quite popular in their own regard.

Hero MotoCorp, with factory dispatches of 89,286 units in Q1 FY2026, has posted a 5 percent YoY growth (Q1 FY2025: 85,389 units). Hero’s scooter range comprises a variety of 110cc, 125cc models and even a new 160cc model. These have together sold 66,631 units, down 11 percent YoY (Q1 FY2025: 74,830 units).

What has brought strong growth to Hero is its dispatches of electric models – the Vida V2 and VX2. The 22,655 EVs dispatched in April-June 2025 are a huge 115 percent increase YoY on the year-ago low base number of 10,559 units. This performance sees Hero maintain its 5 percent share in the scooter market.

Bajaj Auto, too, has benefited from the growing demand for its electric scooters. The company sold a total of 63,620 units in Q1 FY2026, comprising 62,620 units of the Chetak line-up and 1,000 Yulus. This total makes for 45 percent YoY growth (Q1 FY2025: 43,854 units) and a marginal 1 percent increase in market share to 4 percent.

Trailing Bajaj by less than 100 units is India Yamaha Motor, with 63,521 units. This is a sizable 16 percent YoY decline (Q1 FY2025: 75,607 units), as a result of which its market share has fallen to 4 percent from 4.54 percent a year ago. The 125cc Fascino and Ray ZR have together sold 58,534 units, down 17 percent YoY. The 155cc Aerox sporty scooter has sold  4,987 units and registered a decline of 3.6 percent (Q1 FY2025: 5,166 units).

Ather Energy, which is witnessing strong sales momentum for the Rizta family e-scooter, has dispatched 46,907 of its electric scooters, including the 450 models. This has given it 97 percent YoY growth. With this, Ather has doubled its market share to 3 percent from 1.43 percent in Q1 FY2025.
