Honda leads as scooter sales cross 7.4 lakh units in May

Electric models accounted for 18 percent of total scooter sales in the month.

Over 7.39 lakh scooters were dispatched last month, making it the best-ever May for the segment. That’s a 27 percent year-on-year (YoY) surge from 5,80,696 units and a 7 percent increase over April 2026’s 6,91,993 units. May also becomes the fourth month this year when scooter sales crossed the 7 lakh-unit mark, following January (7,50,580 units), February (7,29,774 units) and March (7,61,422 units).

India scooter sales May 2026: OEM-wise breakdown

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India: 2,53,581 units

HMSI continued to lead the market with wholesales rising 17 percent YoY to 2,53,581 units, comprising the Activa and Dio range of scooters. Despite this growth, the company’s market share declined to 34 percent from 37 percent a year ago. The tally also included 812 units of the Activa e: and QC1 electric models. While EVs still account for a small portion of Honda’s scooter volumes, sales were up 20 percent from the year-ago period.

TVS Motor Co: 2,10,450 units

TVS dispatched 2,10,450 scooters – up 33 percent or 51,928 units over May 2025 – comfortably outpacing Honda’s increase of 35,972 units. Its ICE portfolio comprises the Jupiter, Ntorq and Zest, while the iQube and Orbiter EVs contributed 42,192 units, up 53 percent YoY. This helped TVS increase its overall scooter market share to 28 percent from 27 percent, while the share of EVs in its scooter sales rose to 20 percent from 17 percent a year ago.

Suzuki Motorcycle India: 1,08,074 units

Suzuki’s scooter dispatches rose just 2 percent YoY to 1,08,074 units, and its market share fell to 15 percent from 18 percent. The Access 125 continues to be Suzuki’s volume driver, ahead of the Burgman Street and Avenis. The e-Access, Suzuki’s first electric scooter, contributed 518 units during the month.

Hero MotoCorp: 62,307 units

Hero MotoCorp posted the strongest growth among the larger manufacturers with 62,307 units, up 91 percent YoY. This included 20,130 Vida electric scooters, up 141 percent from a year ago, with the share of EVs in its scooter sales rising to 32 percent from 26 percent. On the ICE side, the Destini 125 and Xoom continue to anchor demand. As a result of strong EV performance, Hero recorded the largest market share gain among major manufacturers, climbing to 8.42 percent from 5.60 percent a year ago.

Bajaj Auto: 39,226 units

Bajaj Auto dispatched 39,226 units, up 52 percent YoY. This comprised 38,376 Chetak electric scooters and 1,350 Yulu e-bikes, taking its overall scooter market share to 5 percent from 4 percent a year ago.

India Yamaha Motor: 31,990 units

Yamaha posted 60 percent growth, dispatching 31,990 units and improving its market share to 4 percent from 3 percent a year ago. The Fascino and RayZR together accounted for 29,815 units, up 63 percent YoY, while sales of the Aerox rose 19 percent to 2,091 units. Yamaha, the last Japanese OEM to enter the electric scooter space, dispatched 84 units of the EC-06.

Ather Energy: 26,857 units

Ather Energy sold 26,857 scooters, up 67 percent YoY, capturing a 4 percent share of the overall scooter market. The Rizta, which recently crossed 3 lakh cumulative sales, continues to be Ather’s key volume driver, alongside the 450X, 450S and 450 Apex.

Other manufacturers

Bengaluru-based River Mobility made its debut as a SIAM member company in May, dispatching 3,977 units of its sole product, the Indie – a 234 percent YoY increase that was enough to rank it seventh among electric two-wheeler manufacturers on a retail basis. Piaggio Vehicles, which markets the Aprilia and Vespa brands in India, recorded wholesales of 3,205 units, up 29 percent year-on-year.
