My budget is ₹8 lakh and my family has five members. I am looking for the best family car within this budget, with rear-seat comfort being the top priority. Please suggest suitable options.

Given your requirements, the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger are worth a look. There's plenty of space for rear seat passengers, and there is enough room for three passengers to sit in the back in reasonable comfort.

You could also consider the superbly packaged Renault Triber. It's three rows of seats give lots of flexibility in seating, and the option to slide the middle row also means you can open up lots of legroom by moving the seat to its rearward position.

I need to change my car and am looking for an automatic petrol model. My monthly running is about 200-300 km in Bangalore city, and my budget is ₹10-12 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

There are a plethora of automatic petrol cars available within your budget. Given your monthly travel is just 200-300km, we will give less weightage to fuel economy and more weightage to driving comfort. As we don't know other preferences, here's a shortlist of the best options by body style -

Hatchback - Hyundai i20 IVT Asta (O), Citroen C3 X Shine AT
Compact sedan - Honda Amaze CVT ZX
Compact SUV - Nissan Magnite Turbo CVT, Renault Kiger Turbo CVT Emotion

I am moving on from a manual Tata Nexon and have test-driven the Renault Kiger Turbo Emotion and the Kia Sonet HTK Plus iMT. The Kiger is fully loaded, looks modern and has a good feel, while the Sonet offers a sunroof, iMT useful for city driving, and stronger overall road and brand presence. I’m confused because the Sonet seems like a better car but feels outdated, and the Kiger is very cool and feature-rich but might have poorer resale or other issues. Please advise.

You're right, the Renault Kiger is a modern car which is decently equipped, but its resale value isn't as strong as some other options in this segment. The Kia Sonet feels more polished overall, and it will get you more features too.

Yes, the iMT is convenient, but try getting a proper automatic instead, which will be a far more convenient and smoother option. If you want something a bit more modern, the Hyundai Venue is also an option you must consider. The Mahindra XUV3XO is also a compact SUV you may consider.

I am almost about to buy the Renault Kiger Techno CVT automatic, but I do not see it ranking very high in terms of sales or overall ratings, which makes me nervous. Should I still go for it, or should I buy the manual version for now and continue searching for something better?

If you are happy with the Renault Kiger, there is no reason not to consider purchasing it. Yes, the sales are low compared to other models; however, this is more to do with a low brand strength than any fundamental product problem.
Renault is also investing a lot in India and next year will have an all new Duster as well as a 7-seat version of the same. So if anything, the brand should only get stronger. As for the CVT, you have picked a good version as it comes mated to the turbo engine. This powertrain is lively and fun to drive, and smoother than the non-turbo AMT model.

I am planning to replace my 2020 Nexon Petrol Manual with an automatic petrol sub-compact car. My usage is around 700–800 km per month in the city, with 2–3 long highway trips of about 1,000–1,200 km a year. My priorities are fuel efficiency, driving pleasure, and comfort. With a budget of ₹10–11 lakh ex-showroom, I am confused between the Fronx Turbo, Kiger Turbo, Dzire, and C3 Turbo AT. Please suggest if there is any other car I should consider.

Of your shortlisted cars, the Citroen C3 Turbo AT is the best choice. It's almost uncanny combination of ride comfort and driving pleasure isn't replicated by many, with a strong engine and a smooth but responsive 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Its fuel efficiency, though not best in class, is decent as well; just make sure you have a dealer and service centre close enough to you, as Citroen's network is still growing.

While the Renault Kiger turbo and Nissan Magnite turbo represent better value for money, and better fuel economy, they aren't as comfy or fun to drive as the Citroen. And the Maruti Suzuki Fronx turbo AT, again, while more fuel efficient, will only just about fit into your budget, and that too for a lower-spec variant.

I want to upgrade my car to an AMT version. I have two choices: the Renault Kiger Evolurio and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT. Could you please choose which is better considering low maintenance cost, fuel efficiency, and safety? My budget is under ₹9 lakh.

Considering your requirement, we would suggest choosing the Maruti Suzuki Baleno with the automated manual transmission (AMT) as compared to the Renault Kiger. It has a more powerful and smoother 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine along with a better-tuned AMT gearbox.

In a recent BNCAP crash test, it also scored a decent 4-star rating. Being a Maruti Suzuki car, you won’t have to worry about maintenance costs, fuel efficiency, or overall ownership experience, as it is among the best in its segment.

My wife is 4'10" and is looking for an AMT car for city use (≈600 km/month) in the sub-4-metre segment. Our budget is up to ₹12 lakh on-road. Please suggest suitable models.

There are multiple sub-4m automatic options within your budget.

The Citroen C3 AT is a great product. It's got an elevated seating position which your wife will appreciate. The highlight of the C3 is its engine-gearbox combination. The 1.2-litre engine is peppy and works really well with the smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox. Citroen doesn't have a large service network, but you should not have an issue if you live in a big city.

If your wife is comfortable with a larger feeling vehicle (within sub-4m), the options to consider include automatic versions of the Skoda Kylaq and Mahindra XUV 3XO, and CVT versions of the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.

I’m planning to buy my first car and have a ₹10 lakh budget. I’ve shortlisted the Renault Kiger (CVT). What are the pros and cons of the Kiger CVT, and are there any better CVT options within this budget?

The Renault Kiger with the CVT is a good choice as it has a well-equipped cabin and looks upmarket and new-age. The pros are its design, SUV road presence, good ground clearance, tech and equipment and punch power delivery. The cons are weak fuel efficiency, the touchscreen resolution and cabin insulation. That said, as an overall package and a first car, it is a good choice.

Please suggest a good sub-4m car with a CVT gearbox, a four-cylinder engine, and high ground clearance. It will mainly be used for city driving with occasional highway trips.

The Honda Amaze is the only option with a four-cylinder engine and a CVT gearbox. It is smooth and has Honda's reknowned reliability and enough ground clearance despite being a sedan.
However, if you must have an SUV, you will have to stick to the 3-cylinder engines. The Renault Kiger is a good city car that gets a feature-rich cabin, new-age design, and good ground clearance. The turbo-petrol engine in this Renault car is powerful, and the smooth CVT gearbox is great for the city.

I have booked the Tata Punch Adventure+ AMT (on-road ~ ₹ 8.5 L in Hyderabad). I’m wondering if there are other good SUVs (or mini-SUVs) from other brands with AMT / automated manual transmission that offer good mileage and are reliable. What would you recommend?

There are a few more sub-compact AMT SUVs, just like the Tata Punch, that suit your requirement within the same budget. The closest competitor is the Hyundai Exter, which also comes with a 1.2 petrol engine and an AMT gearbox. Plus, it is known to offer better real-world mileage and is arguably more reliable overall than the Tata Punch. You could also consider the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite, which offer larger and more spacious cabins, although they are slightly more expensive too.
