I am a new driver and have been driving in Bangalore for the past three years. I currently own a second-hand Maruti Celerio. I am planning to buy a new automatic car with a budget of ₹9.5 lakh. Could you please recommend a safe and comfortable car that is easy to drive?

We would recommend sticking to the Maruti family and upgrading to the new Swift. The Swift, in its ZXI AMT guise, will fit in your budget and deliver your requirements. It is compact, which makes it easy to handle, and has enough power at 82hp for the city and the highway from the 1.2-litre engine.

In terms of efficiency, the AMT version returns 12.7kpl in the city and 19.7kpl on the highway. The AMT is one of the nicer versions in the segment and makes light work of city driving. The ride comfort is good too, and the Swift is tuned for bumpy Indian roads. The ZXI will also get you a good kit like 15-inch alloy wheels, touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging and rear AC vents.

My driving is around 800 km a month. I am not sure which one would be more value for money: Swift or Baleno/Glanza. Currently, I drive an Urban Cruiser but am looking for a change. My priority is ease of city driving, comfort on highway drives, and I will go for an AMT. The more fuel-efficient and safe, the better. Though safety and efficiency do not go hand in hand. Please help me decide.

The Swift's 1.2L 3-cylinder petrol engine is very drivable and is likely to deliver slightly better fuel efficiency compared to the Baleno's/Glanza's 1.2L 4-cylinder unit. The Maruti Suzuki Swift is quite peppy up to 60kph of speed, after which you will find performance to be a bit lacklustre. And since you've mentioned you want a car for city and highway usage both, we recommend you opt for the Baleno or Glanza instead, for its more effortless performance.
There's little to choose between the Baleno and Toyota Glanza, as both are nearly identical. Though the Glanza's beige-black interior colour scheme looks a touch more upmarket than the Maruti's.

I am planning to buy my first car. My budget is a maximum of ₹7 lakh. I am thinking of Ignis, but I am also confused, as it has not received any major updates in a long time.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis, for some reason, never really clicked as a mainstream car and isn’t among Maruti-Suzuki’s big sellers. The quirky styling is not to everyone’s taste, and that’s probably why it hasn’t found mass appeal like the Maruti Suzuki Swift. That said, underneath it uses the same tried-and-tested 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine, so mechanically it’s proven and easy to live with.
In fact, the Ignis is quite an interesting car. The part-hatch, part-compact-SUV design gives it a distinct character, and the tall stance and good ground clearance are definite advantages on bad roads. It feels compact to drive, but you sit a bit higher than in a regular hatchback, which many first-time buyers appreciate.
The reason Maruti-Suzuki hasn’t updated it significantly is simple: average monthly sales of around 2,000 units are low by Maruti standards, so it doesn’t justify heavy investment. The company seems content to let it continue as a niche offering. That, however, shouldn’t dissuade you if you genuinely like the car. It’s reliable, relatively affordable to maintain and fits comfortably within your Rs 7 lakh on-road budget.
If you want something more mainstream and easier to resell later, you could also consider the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R or even the lower variants of the Swift, which are hugely popular. But if the Ignis appeals to you, there’s no strong reason to avoid it.

I own a 2018 Maruti Swift petrol manual. I am now looking for a bigger car with good ground clearance and better fuel efficiency. My daily commute is about 25 km. I liked the Tata Sierra. Should I wait for the Sierra EV or consider hybrids like the Grand Vitara? Hybrids come at a higher premium. Are they worth it, or should I go for an EV?

Unless you buy a strong hybrid vehicle, no other vehicle larger than your petrol Maruti Swift will deliver better fuel efficiency. That said, since your daily commute is only 25km, paying a premium for a hybrid vehicle or EV (over a similar petrol vehicle) doesn't make much financial sense.
If you like the Tata Sierra, we'd recommend stretching for the turbo-petrol version only. However, the fuel efficiency is likely to be low due to its 1.5-tonne kerb weight. Alternatively, you can opt for the 1.5 petrol (mild-hybrid) versions of Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris or Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which are fuel-efficient and have good ground clearance.

I am planning to buy a new car which will be my first car, with a budget of ₹9 lakh to ₹11 lakh maximum. Can you please suggest the best variant in terms of fuel efficiency, ride experience, safety, and value for money?

You can consider the Tata Altroz. While it may not be as fuel-efficient as something like a Maruti Swift, it is efficient enough, and if driven well, it should get you low double-digit real figure KPL figures in the city.

Moreover, its ride quality is very good, and it soaks up road imperfections with ease and while always retaining good control. In terms of safety, there's a host of features like 6 airbags and ESP standard, as well as a 5-star BNCAP crash rating. Within your budget, you should get the higher-end petrol variant, and you would thus enjoy some nice-to-have features too. We would say the 'Creative' variant would do you well.

I want to buy an automatic car with a Rs 10 lakh budget. What are the best options?

The Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT is the best small automatic car under Rs 10 lakh. It is compact, comfortable to drive, has a good ride and gets Maruti's extensive service backing too. Despite being an automatic, it returns an impressive 14kpl in the city and 17kpl on the highway.
The top-spec ZXI Plus trim gets LED headlamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, wireless connectivity, auto climate control, reversing camera and more. It is a well-rounded car with lots of practicality and strong resale value.

I am just learning car driving. I am planning to buy a used hatchback to learn fluently and use it for 5 years. Which car would be fine? I may use it weekly once may be upto 100kms and 3 months once a long drive of 800kms including up and down. I am living in Bangalore. I want a manual car

Since you are still learning, two cars that you can look at in the second hand market are the Maruti Suzuki Swift or Hyundai i20. Swift is slightly smaller, making it easy to drive in the city while i20 comes with more space and premium interiors. As you wish to keep the car for over 5 years, it will be wise to go for a car which is around 3 years old and should have an odometer reading between 35-40000kms. This way you will save on cost and still get a car which has some life left in it.

I want to purchase a first car for my daughter. I am interested in an automatic car mainly for city use. Monthly usage will be approximately 1,200 km. The car should be under ₹9 lakh. How is the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, and what mileage can I expect from the AMT?

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is a good choice. It’s spacious for its size, comfortable, and very easy to drive in the city. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is smooth, and while the AMT adds convenience, it isn’t the slickest in the segment. In real-world conditions, you can expect around 10-12 kpl in the city and 15-16 kpl on the highway.
Another car you can consider is the Maruti Suzuki Swift. It has a proven, reliable engine paired with a smoother AMT, and it is unbeatable on fuel efficiency. In our real-world tests, it delivered over 12 kpl in the city and over 19 kpl on the highway.

Which car would be more suitable for city use and occasional highway driving: the Swift or the Ignis? My budget is around Rs 8 lakh, which can be stretched. Or should I look at lower variants of the Sonet or 3XO?

In your budget, you can get the Swift VXI (O) and the Ignis Alpha petrol manual. Between the two, we would suggest going for the Maruti Suzuki Swift as it is the newer car of the two and has a more modern cabin with better interiors.
The one distinct advantage the Maruti Ignis has over the Swift, however, is that it still uses the older 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine, which is smoother and feels more peppy compared to the new three-cylinder engine in the Swift. On the upside, the Swift will prove to be more efficient.
If you are going to be driving more often on the highway, we would also suggest considering the Mahindra 3XO or the Skoda Kylaq. We would not recommend the absolute base variants, though, and suggest the REVX M in case of the 3XO and the newly launched Classic Plus in case of the Kylaq, as they offer the basic features you would want without feeling too stripped out.
The advantage of the 3XO and the Kylaq is their turbo petrol engines, which make them more versatile as the added power helps them handle both city and highway duties better. They are also five-star rated in Bharat NCAP, which adds an extra layer of safety.
We would not recommend the Kia Sonet right now as it is due for an update soon, and the lower variants come with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine, similar to the Swift and Ignis.

I want to buy a car under ₹10 lakh, mainly for city driving.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift is a very good choice as a city car. It has compact dimensions, light steering and good fuel efficiency. Powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cyl engine, the Swift has enough performance while maintaining a strong fuel economy of around 14kpl in the city.

What's also a positive is the ride comfort, thanks to its soft suspension setup, which helps bump absorption. In your budget, you can get the top-spec ZXI+ trim that gets a well-appointed cabin with all the necessary features.

The cherry on top is also how well the Swift holds its resale value.
