The Volkswagen ID 2all concept will enter production as the ID Polo EV, the German brand has confirmed. Set to be revealed in full production form in 2026, VW’s entry-level EV will be shown in near-production camouflaged form at the upcoming Munich motor show, alongside the performance-oriented ID Polo GTI – essentially the production-spec ID GTI concept. The names for the upcoming cars showcase Volkswagen’s intent to use the popular brands from its history for its all-electric range.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Shafer explained, “Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds. They stand for a strong brand and embody characteristics such as quality, timeless design and technologies for all. That’s why we’re moving our well-known names into the future. The ID Polo is just the beginning.”

  1. VW ID Polo expected with 38kWh and 56kWh battery options
  2. ID Polo GTI Clubsport and R versions under evaluation
  3. ID Polo is 4,053mm long, 1,816mm wide and 1,530mm tall

Volkswagen ID Polo EV battery, range and performance

VW ID Polo and ID Polo GTI share the Skoda Epiq’s MEB Entry platform

The ID Polo, which uses the same MEB Entry platform as the Skoda Epiq, is expected to be powered by 38kWh and 56kWh battery packs, with the latter having a WLTP range of up to 450km on a single charge. The battery units will be capable of charging at speeds up to 125kW. Autocar UK says that buyers will have a choice of four power levels depending on the variant, including a range-topping GTI variant.

Speaking of the ID Polo GTI, this will be Volkswagen’s first proper attempt at an all-electric hot hatch, and it’s expected to get a 226hp motor. VW is also said to be exploring a more hardcore ID Polo GTI Clubsport variant with around 286hp and an even more performance-focused 400hp dual-motor (AWD) R-badged version.

Volkswagen ID Polo EV exterior and interior

ID Polo GTI sports more aggressive design cues

The all-electric hatchbacks share a majority of design cues and look a lot like the concepts they are based on, from the slim headlight and tail-light units to the large glasshouse. Naturally, the GTI sports more aggressive cues, such as the slightly flared wheel arches, a small front diffuser, split boot-mounted spoilers, and a pair of rear bumper cutouts (likely to mimic exhausts). The ID Polo GTI also gets larger alloy wheels of a bespoke design.

Volkswagen has also confirmed the ID Polo’s size. The entry-level EV is 4,053mm long, 1,816mm wide and 1,530mm tall, which makes it marginally larger than the international-spec ICE Polo. It should be noted that the Polo that was on sale in India until April 2022 was a sub-four-metre model, unlike its European counterpart.

12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and 10.9-inch digital driver display expected

The interior of the ID Polo is expected to feature a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.9-inch digital instrument cluster. There will also be physical toggles and switches for the audio and climate control systems. In line with VW’s aim to boost material quality while reducing its cars' environmental impacts, the electric hatchback’s cabin will not use any glue and hard plastics.

Future Volkswagen ID EVs to use familiar names

Golf, Passat, Tiguan names expected to be used on future VW EVs

Autocar UK reports that VW’s ID 3, ID 4 and ID 7 are expected to adopt the ID Golf, ID Tiguan and ID Passat names, respectively. Further, the production-spec ID Every1 – due in 2027 – is also expected to be named the ID Up or ID Lupo. Volkswagen has also confirmed that the ID Cross – essentially the VW T-Cross’ EV counterpart – will also be revealed by the end of next year.
