Kia Stinger EV teased side profile

Just over two years since the discontinuation of the ICE-powered Stinger, Kia has released images of an all-new electric concept on its social media handles. While the South Korean auto major is yet to confirm details, this prototype could lead to the next-gen Stinger.

Next-gen Kia Stinger: What we know so far

Speaking to Autocar UK, Kia Motors CEO and president Ho Sung Song had earlier indicated the brand’s intention to enhance its perception among prospective buyers by developing an electric model similar to the old Stinger. “That kind of model is under study,” he said. “What kind of model can help build the brand? This is what we are now studying.” Although the new concept’s teaser has been officially released online, there are no additional details at this juncture on whether this is indeed the next-gen Kia Stinger.

Next-gen Kia Stinger: Exterior design

Kia’s new concept does not share the first-gen Stinger’s traditional but sleek sedan form factor. Instead, it sports a coupe-SUV-like stance and roofline. The prototype features steeply raked front and rear pillars, an extensive glasshouse, a stubby but sculpted front end, flared front fenders and prominent rear haunches.

The carmaker has integrated vertical fins and multiple air channels up front, likely to optimise efficiency by directing airflow around the vehicle in an uninterrupted and precise manner. Then, there is the smooth top portion of this concept, which droops gently towards the rear – yet another design aspect intended to reduce drag.

The Kia EV concept features 3D-design angular rear lights and slim LED elements located on the flanks of the bonnet, above the front fenders, extending right up to the A-pillar. These have rear-facing cameras, replacing traditional outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs). There are additional LEDs in the rear windscreen and bumper as well.

Next-gen Kia Stinger: Expected interior design and features

Compared to the ICE-powered Stinger, the electric concept seen in the pictures appears visibly larger. If the next-gen Stinger were to adopt a similar design, there would likely be more space on offer for occupants.

While Kia has not released any interior pictures of this concept, we can see a ‘floating’ dashboard design and a yoke-style steering column. There are also two individual seats at the back of this concept, though the production-spec model could stick to a bench seat, as in the EV6.

Next-gen Kia Stinger: Expected powertrain and range

Kia has at its disposal an 800-volt E-GMP architecture that it uses for the EV6, which is sold in India. The next-gen Stinger will be a performance EV and will thus utilise the brand’s modern 800V skateboard platform. However, as mentioned earlier, Kia has yet to disclose any specifics regarding this concept or the production model it will give rise to.
