After a long wait, Jeep India will finally launch the Compass Trailhawk in July this year. The off-road-focused Compass will get 4WD with low range and a 'Rock’ mode. The Trailhawk will also have an increased ground clearance, and better approach (30-degree) and departure (33.6-degree) angles owing to its uniquely designed front and rear bumpers.
Stylistically, it will get bits like dual-tone alloys and a black anti-glare bonnet decal but the Trailhawk will miss out on its signature red tow hooks at the front. India’s recently enforced pedestrian protection norms require all cars to have smooth front ends, which means no projections that could hurt a person; and this makes the hooks illegal. However, the single tow hook at the rear will remain. The hooks will also not be available as an accessory or dealership fitment thanks to the rules.
This setup is similar to the UK, where the Compass doesn't get the front tow hooks, unlike markets like the US and Australia where they are allowed.
Also missing (compared to the top-end Compass 4x4 Limited) will be a few features like a powered driver’s seat and auto headlamps and wipers. Jeep India want to keep prices in check as the Trailhawk will finally mean the Compass will have the much-sought-after diesel-automatic configuration, and a lower sticker price will keep it competitive against the Hyundai Tucson. Expect the Trailhawk to be priced around Rs 27 lakh (on-road).
